I once used this spell to hold and ally in place so I could use him as a ladder. Maybe not the best use.

Can't decide between this, levitate, or blindness/deafness. All are decently balanced debuffs with comparable strengths and weaknesses. Levitate while not giving crits is a single save with no escape after, blindness/deafness while not as powerful as either requires no concentration. Blindness and hold person do have upcasting options as well while levitate has utility and defensive options.

In my personal opinion, I'd lean towards Hold Person. Although I must stress it really does come down to play style and party comp!

In the campaign I run the players are a wolf riding goblin raid party, I treat people knocked off a mount that moved during the last opportunity it had to do so as falling the distance the mount moved to emphasize how fast they're going. My players have become fans of targeting mounted opponents with this spell, then hitting them with walloping javelins, crossbow bolts, or arrows. The target automatically fails and is dismounted. Also great against those on flying mounts.

How? Thirsting blade doesn’t stack with extra attack. You get 3 per attack action 6 total with action surge If you have advantage you can spend that to make it 7 and if you dual wield 8 with the bonus action

Best use of this spell is if you have a Fighter or Monk in your Party who can attack multiple times. A question comes into mind with this spell. If you cast this on a person whose falling/ in the air does it freeze them? Like do they fall or are they suspended in the air. If so you could have your largest PC volunteer to be a stepping stone over gaps or dangerous obstacles.

Since this is an Enchantment spell, it is safe to assume the target isn't HELD in place, the mind actually freezes, stopping all motion commands to the target. Therefore if you hit a flying creature with it (or someone falling), it falls/keep falling to the ground instead of being there, stuck in place. You don't alter the physical properties of the target or the medium (the air, for exemple), that would be Transmutation effect. You just shut down the target's mind, which is SCARY: This is like being held captive in your own body, unable to move, watching as the Human Paladin strikes your body with a two handed sword, feeling pain, but unable to scream. Gotta love Enchantment spells, I guess.

What's the difference between this and tashas hideous laughter?

Heya! I know it's been awhile since you commented, but I can explain: Hold Person and THL are both Enchantment spells that require concentration from the caster and a Wisdom Save from the target, lest it restrict the targets' movement to 0 and Incapacitates them and eats their turn. They both can make the Wisdom save at the end of each of their wasted turns to end the spell early. The difference is between the two spells is in the conditions that they inflict: -Tasha's Hideout Laughter(1st level) makes the target guffaw and fall Prone. They can repeat the wisdom save at advantage if they're hit by an attack. It can't be upcast. It CAN affect ANY creature type. -Hold Person (2nd level) only affects humanoid creatures, but it can be upcast to target multiple humanoid creatures. Also, Hold Person *paralyzes* the target(s), which invites crits from melee attacks within 5ft of the target. And all attacks are at advantage, making a melee crit more likely. And the paralyzed target(s) auto-flubs all Dex saves & Strength saves. Devastating, but with a narrower window of eligible targets, while capable of targeting multiple. In conclusion, Tasha's Hideous Laughter is a swiss army control spell, decent for any combat encounter to remove any kind of enemy from initiative for at least one round and allows for at least one coup de grace. Hold Person is a precision scalpal, with a smaller scope of target that applies harsher penalties and invites multiple sources of calamity to cascade upon the paralyzed, and it can potentially be multiple humanoids. Hold Monster is the all-affecting version of Hold Person, which is 5th level and consequently less feasible to upcast and target multiple targets and available to far fewer classes than Hold Person anyway Hope that helps! Lemme know if I missed anything, and have a great Thanksgiving/Thursday!

I have a question: If i cast this on someone while we're on a ship and then throw them over board, would the creature just drown and die instandly? And if it's a paralysed player character falling into the water, would he or she have to roll death saves?
@WACC_Warlord
Жыл бұрын
Hi, Its been a while since you posted your question. No they would not instantly die. As a reminder hold person lasts one minute and a round of combat in DnD is 6 seconds. The paralyzed condition does not stop the target from breathing, as such it would likely take more than one minute for the target to drown. If they were to fail their saving throws for 5 rounds (30 seconds), you could ask your DM if they would roll a constitution saving throw for the creature to see if its able to hold its breath, like wise if a character is drowning.
