Imo the Marlin series is not just a “gateway” mountain or road bike but a “Swiss Army Knife” bike. No, you won’t be able to “shred” on the trails with the full sus or enduro people, but you can still get around. No, you won’t be able to keep up with the roadies either, but you will make up for it by being able to ride for a longer season and in poor weather.

I’ve determined that the rattle noise is largely from too much slack of the two cables that feed into the holes on the down tube on the left hand side. My solution has been to pull them both taut (so that the slack is now up by the handlebars) and clamp them together tight with a zip tie. Then, slide the zip tie up against the insertion points. That should take care of most of the noise.
@flrn6233

Yup, and you can tie them with a piece of bicycle tube. And you can wrap some of the bicycle tube over the chain stay. So if the bike is noisy, it's because your fault.

You're misusing the word 'snobby'. People who want to maximise their bikes and upgrade components is not 'snobbish'. It's a desire to improve their ride. Each bike offers certain compromises, what suits you will depend on your specific use scenario, terrain, etc. Often there are little things that can be improved to make your bike better/more comfortable/more efficient etc. Many things in life can be improved with small upgrades. What's the problem? Part of having fun in this hobby is playing around with your bike. If you're happy with stock everything then so be it, no need to criticise people who are more ambitious adventurous with their hobby.

All good advice! The front spring fork probably makes some noise too. It's a capable bike, but not a high-end one, so you can expect some of that. I think a lot of folks end up with that bike or similar ones from other brands because they want to buy a "real" bike instead of something junky from a department store and they get sticker shock about how much these things can cost. So they go to the lower end of the "good stuff". I also think a lot of people want to see if they like it before spending thousands of dollars on a bike. The good part of higher end brands like this is you can sell it or trade it in to get something better later. It's always cheaper to get the better bike first if you can afford it.

Here's why I WOULD highly recommend the Marlin 6 is because of the geometry of the frame. This bike fits perfectly with almost anyone who rides it, big or small as opposed to other bikes. The frame is the prize, not the component factory parts which can be easily replaced with higher quality parts over time.
@FishSticks6
7 ай бұрын
Frame is absolutely garbage and you cannot change my mind about it. I've owned a marlin 5 for 2 years which I have upgraded pretty heavily over the time I have owned it. I put on a Deore cassette, GX shifter, XX trigger shifter, PNW dropper, Sram Eagle Cranks with a new BB, new brakes, and some new bars. I also upgraded a couple more things like bolts and grips which are small. The head angle is okay for this type of bike, however the price of $700 for the bike is mind-blowing considering it is not tapered. In addition, after 2019, the Marlins do not come with internal cable routing for a dropper which is crazy how Trek removed it to make more money. Would not recommend.

@rileygill3226 let me clarify something very important regarding this this subject. I brought my Trek Marlin 6 in 2017 in which the frame was very different from any Trek Marlin 5 models of today or yesterday. No internal cable, no boxy frame etc, but a very good sturdy rounded tubular cross country bike frame that's built for long term usage and key upgrades. It has traveled thousands of miles and still running strong to this day. Another thing that I learned in 2017 was that the Trek Marlin 5 was for kids and teens. In other words you invested in the wrong model because I tried both models and the Marlin 6 was far superior and better suited for long term usage and very upgradible. Finally, the Trek Marlin 6 is made for cross country riders who stay put on the ground. It is not made to do fancy tricks or to hop off mountain tops. My research and experience tells me that you invested in the wrong model. A 2021Trek Marlin 5 can't even compare to a 2017 Trek Marlin 6.

I have the Trek Marlin 6 2017 model and it's made a little better than the current model. The frame is rounded and totally different from the 2022 model. After 5 years of hardcore riding and after 50,000 miles cross country, no jumps or crazy stunts this bike is awesome. Here's the trick, put in higher quality parts like good cassettes and hubs and replace the factory parts that come with the original bike. I would recommend this bike for commuting long distances because it's very comfortable to ride. It's not built for racing other bikes, but it's built for the cross country rider who is not into jumping over mountains or racing others on road bikes.

Nice comment, totally agree. I bought my 2017s (second-hand) Marlin 6 that same year, and the frame design still looks great. I've traveled with it and had nice riding. But now, I'm thinking of getting it some upgrades, what do you recommend? Cedric
@cedricbethea
Жыл бұрын
@@carlosmacedo4792Most of my Trek Marlin 6 original parts were basic at best. I found out that with better parts the bike performed at a very high level. It turns out that the body and frame of the bike are the prize. I think that's because the frame is strong, comfortable and user friendly compared to the newest models. First, I would recommend replacing the factory installed fork because it will wear down and rust after a certain number of miles, especially if you ride everyday. I installed a Manitou air fork and it's completely transformed the bike into something special. The second must have upgrade are the hubs. Hope or Industry Nine hubs will last a lifetime on a Marlin 6. These 2 upgrades have turned my Marlin into a great investment over time. Also, with cassette and crankset upgrades the Marlin 6 2017 rides and feels like an EBike without a motor. If you want to bring your Marlin 6 to another level start by replacing the factory issued fork and hub sets with higher quality replacements to start. These basic upgrades have worked so well for me that i would look to buy another Trek Marlin 6 2017 frame and then rebuild it with my favorite upgrades, again. Thanks you for questions and input on this interesting subject.

Marlin like other entry level XC bikes are exactly that an entry level costing far less than higher level bikes with better frames/components. considering how many like new bikes come back on the market, Marlin or even multi sport hybrid Matty started with is a perfect starter bike to try out the sport without a huge upfront investment. if one does not like biking, very little to lose on getting out of the sport. if higher desire for higher level bikes, keep the Marlin as a second bike and go for the right bike that will best suit your needs. I have gone from one end of road bike to the other end of MTB [six bikes in two years] and now I have settled on Quick 1 [speedster] and Roam 2 [gravel-light trail] and serves my biking needs. typical new XC 1x10/12 setup doesn't have enough gears for speed so I got rid of 2021 Talon 1 which was a replacement for 2019 Marlin 6. anyone liking MTB, make sure to invest little more and get one with Deore/X7 or higher group-set.

The Marlin series is geared towards cross country (XC) mountain biking. If you are looking for a commuter bike that you can take off road or some fast light trails then stick with a hard tail XC bike like a “Trek Marlin”. If majority of the time is spent off-road on hard technical trails and some enduro then stay away from the Marlin you will be highly disappointed. The whole “Mountain Bike” identifier is a huge misnomer. Too many subcategories in these class of bikes. When trying to help someone getting into biking decide what bike to get I give them 3 options; Road,Hill, and Mountain. I ask them where do they see themselves riding mostly. Road represents road and hybrid/gravel bikes. Hill represents XC and trail. Mountain represents Enduro and downhill. From there it’s pretty easy to see what type of bike they need. If that doesn’t help I just tell them to a full suspension trail bike since that’s the 3 little bears of bikes.

I'm picking me new Excalibur 7up tomorrow,been a long time since I bought a new bike,I wanted something reliable,I do occasionally dirt,off road but mostly a work commuter bike, always had mountain bikes and feel more stable with pot holes,and hills were I live in Bristol/UK,I just hope I made the right choice with the gearing only being on one cog,never had that gearing system before, anyway I'll see how I feel when I see and try the bike,I did try a go on one of the shop models.....just starting to wonder if I made the right choice now after watching your video Matt, I'll see tomorrow....

Great video. Guys i'm a 185 cm x 83 kg and i've some concerns about sizing. Trek official websites tells me to go for a size L but i'm worried it would be too small. Anyone with advices or experiences about sizing that bike?
@wanderlust...H
Жыл бұрын
I too want to know that. I'm 6 ft and after observing Trek's sizes I thought I'll need an XL. But their size chart suggests ML (medium to large) or L. But from the look of it, I find the L size also to be a small.

@@wanderlust...H Hi mate, if my experience can be useful i’ve been on a Marlyn 6 size L for the last month and everything went great. No doubt, going for an XL probably it would have been to much. Going for the proper size and not for the “more room” option i think is the best, especially if you think about the fact that it s not a really lightweight mtb. Good luck!

@wanderlustH11 I carry a 16mm D shackle and a 15mm sheathed chain lock. Between them they cost more than half the Marlin. In my city, would take a thief all of 2 minutes to have these beat. You tell me what other precautions I could possibly take, lol
