I have a 63 non reverb Blackface Princeton. Awesome amp. I have is set up with an original Vox G12 blue Celestion. I bought the amp in 1969-70. I did a lot of mods, I was teaching myself using that, long before it was a vintage amp. I home record guitar and bass through it.

I subscribed about 2 weeks ago when I stumbled upon your "dad band review" video. To your point; there are a billion YT channels about gear, lessons, etc. So what I really dig about your channel is you talk about your experiences in the realm of music. And I really enjoyed hearing your insight on the dad band submission. Great channel, please keep it up!! Oh and I will contribute some of my experiences with a Hot Rod Deluxe. I used to run it as a head, through a Genz-Benz 212 Flex. It really opened it up, and enjoyed doing that for a few years. But I'm now running a Celestion Alnico Creamback, as a combo amp now. While the Creamback does break up quickly (as expected), I don't run it for gain/distortion. Was looking for more of a Strat, straight into the combo, and that has been working out great.

I was watching a Carol Kaye interview in which she said the same thing concerning scales v. chord tones. She went on to demonstrate some of the things she played on and it was so tastefully quirky and musical. I was still dubious that the concept would be valid for all types of music until I heard her playing with Joe Pass. I'm no longer dubious. Fantastic sounds, Justin. I've been in the process of designing and/or copying a tube amp circuit and I've been on the fence about which direction to go. Your Princeton and Deluxe Reverb videos have helped me make up my mind.

Another excellent video thanks!. Princeton Reverb is one of the ultimate amps. Great not only in the studio or in rehearsals, it is great live on small gigs, AND mic'd on big gigs. Soundmen and bandmates (especially singers) LOVE IT when you use a good Princeton. Great for keeping stage volumes pleasant. (Unless you play in a band of Gorillas and Neanderthals, then you may need to bring a Deluxe Reverb.😉) You NEED to get a BF or SF; the Reissues are brittle-sounding, and don't have the characteristics of the vintage ones. I tried them and was sorely disappointed.

Your tone tip really nailed it. Check out a Tone Tubby Humbolt 12" hemp Alnico and change the coupling cap on pin 6, plate on triode B to .001uf on V3 12AX7 to tighten up a 12" speaker. I also change the 100k slope resistor to an 82K and an 8K in series (works out to be a 90k slope resistor) for better dynamics and more volume. The Princeton is so much easier to hulk around than the Deluxe is and it has sweeter tone.

Hi Justin, I would absolutely give the newer Jensen Blackbird 40 10" a shot with a Princeton. It has a stronger AlNiCo than usual, which makes for AlNiCo sweetness in the top end, while keeping the bass tight, almost or just like a ceramic. The voice is the classic vintage vibe, but with a wider range of useful tones. It's absolutely worth a try once or before your Eminence gives up the goods. Btw. I LOVE your playing. Marvelous!

@heikofister9739 have you tried the Blackbird 10? I have the 12” in a 1980 Fender 30 1x12 combo, which is like a Deluxe Reverb on steroids, and man, that’s maybe the sweetest speaker I’ve ever come across! Totally superb. Perfect link between vintage and modern. I just ordered a Celestion V-Type Junior 10” for my 65 Princeton Reverb, but eventually, might like to settle on the Blackbird 40 watt Jensen, if it’s as good as the 12” version, which still blows me away every time…

This awesome! I’m always confused by how people crank the volume on their amps with the bass up high. It’s so flubby and farty. So funny... The Princeton was just a step up from the Champ back in the day. Never considered a real user. We used them in studio settings for certain things. But it was always the Deluxes, supers and Twins that got the job done. But they were easy to move around and if there just MR and Trbl EQs called for, the Princetons saved your back. It was always your good relationship with a music store to go and borrow one. As they were considered student amps. I think off the floor they cost around $175. And look at the hype and cost now. Little 10". Amazing !!!!

Do you find the 10's in a Princeton Reverb or a Super Reverb to be a bit plunky vs going through a 12" seems more smooth and I guess slightly more compressed? I'm looking for that beautiful Fender amp sound with the beautiful reverb I got from my 1966 super reverb (sold it) but in a much smaller package. I will use it for recording in hotel rooms and bedrooms aka home studio, so I cannot be loud. But I need that Fender clean tone, edge of break-up, as a pedal platform, and also like it would be on 10. Running a 1x 12" cabinet stuffed into a closet might work, but most of the time even that is too loud. I'm thinking a 12 watt 1965 reissue Princeton Reverb with a 12" might be the one. I did LOVE the tones you got on your Deluxe Reverb video when bridging but it's probably too loud. What are your thoughts on this since you have both amps. I'm assuming they are not re-issues.

The PR is great for anything. The DR can be too loud in some situations. I prefer the DR for rock and for cleaner country playing where I need more headroom. Both mic up really well. I did hear a tiny bit of noise with the Princeton on this video, but your set up is virtually silent other than guitar. I have great instruments and amps, but no matter what I do I have more noise than I want. I use a noise gate but I don’t like the way it cuts off sound when it still ringing and fading out. I even get too much noise when going direct to my computer. I can angle and hold my guitars just right to stay in the quietest spot. Maybe it’s my guitar room, the electric or something.
