The absolutely best tutorial on the Orton effect, thanks Wayne. Your method is by far the simplest and most effective.

Your Orton effect is really a logical and flexible method utilizing using the thinking of "film" thank you!

The third method is the one I will be using for my images. I like that it is not destructive and that you are working with raw files.. Learned something very useful today. Thank you, Wayne Fox!

Brilliant tutorial. The only guide I had seen for the Orton Effect up to now was to create a duplicate layer, blur that layer and then apply a levels or curves adjustment to the layer and lower the opacity right down. It works fine but this guide provides so many different options and your method has much greater control on the final image. I have just tried your method on a sunset image and then applied a luminosity mask to recover the darker areas. I think that it worked really well. Thank you.

Wayne, I tried method three and it's pretty cool. I was a bit wary of applying multiply as blending mode for the group as it looked a bit radical, but I dialled down the opacity in the image I tried and looks great. Thank you, yours is definitely the best way I've seen to reproduce the effect

Instead of creating a luminosity mask and then using the color range I think it might work to use the blend if option and reduce the brights and blacks to where it is nice.

Luminosity masks are not affected by color, only density. The advantage of a luminosity mask is the mask is proportional to the density of the image throughout the range, meaning the affect is reduced gradually and proportionally from the brightest part of the image (most of the effect shows) to the darkest shadows (where most of the effect is eliminated). It does take a couple of tries to find the balance for each image, but I like the idea that the "light" is contributing to the effect so the brighter the more effect the mask is also editable if there are areas where ti needs removed manually or strengthen manually. Blend if sliders are also a good option, I've used them occasionally, the advantage with them is you can focus on the lower and higher densities, so the midtone's are all affected equally regardless of density. Certainly an option to try for those who know how to use them, some people struggle with splitting the sliders and finding a balance that doesn't create a problem.

Masking highlighs and shadows is crutial to making use of the effect without going to 1980s porno / glamourshots levels of cheeze. Thanks for the excellent overview!

Hi Wayne. Thanks for your tutorial. I have been playing with different techniques but I notice that I can get a similar effect with the "clarity" scroll bar in PS RAW. Am i wrong?

Soo is there like a reversed cause I was doing this in reverse instead of bringing out the highlights i figured if highlights are dreamy I was working with Macabre themed art I wanted to make a trail photo I took look more spooky so I brought out the Shadows so instead of a dreamy look it'd be nightmare like. I wasn't sure if a reversed orton effect was a thing?

Didn't Ansel Adams do this back in the early 1900's?
@cwaynefox

Thanks for the comment. You’re probably referring to Ansel’s first work, called parmelian prints. I had forgotten about these. He used a darkroom technique to produce these, not really similar to Michael Orton’s sandwiched transparency effect. His goal was to simulate charcoal drawings, where Orton’s goal was to simulate water color paintings. I”m not sure anyone has ever figured out exactly how he made these, and he only did this for a very small portfolio as he began his career. Certainly historically interesting. Best resource I have found that dives into what and how is this done ...lisaduncanllc.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/duncan_technical_study_parmelian3.pdf

@@cwaynefox yes, I realized after the post that it wasn't the same thing. The definition I read made Orton effect sound like HDR. I was under the impression Adams did a lot of masking and multiple exposure in the darkroom to get a higher dynamic range. Been a while since I read anything on the topic. Liked your tutorial though!!!

Yes it is cool effect, but its pure artificial effect and makes photo unnatural. Most pro photographers use it and it just getting boring. Even average photo can be now turn to keeper, it ain,t photography anymore its postprography. Basically not real image

just duplicating an effect that has been used for decades long before digital photography. Not for everyone, and certainly not for every shot. This won't turn any photo with poor lighting or bad composition into a keeper. Not as simple as you make it sound.
