The cost difference for me to change my oil with good quality oil and changing the filter every time every 3000 miles, compared to only swapping the oil is negligible. I'll keep doing my frequent high quality full oil changes! The biggest thing for me is just the time it takes. Why bother with low quality oil? Why not swap the filter? I'm right there already.

Nothing more satisfying then knowing you have clean oil in your car at all times! I change my oil in my 2011 Toyota Avalon every 5k miles because I do 90% highway driving. For my wife’s 2016 Ford Explorer Sport, I change it every 3-4K miles. I’ll take the small increase in expense of more oil changes per year vs having the engine need replaced prematurely because of extended OCIs. Always love your view on oil change intervals!

I am an immigrant to this country. I came as a refugee and I understand that although the U.S. has a lot of issues, the history of that flag is not representative of that whatsoever. The flag represents all that is good about this country and its founding. I am a history fanatic and it pains me to see the state of this great country. How the people who have been handed the unique opportunity to lead the greatest experiment in the history of mankind have turned out to be the worst stewards of such an opportunity. It is not about party affiliation. It is about having the moral sense to know that when this country succeeds, all humankind benefits and foregoing all personal benefit for the greater good. If politics wasn't a career but rather a public service, I believe we would be in a much better state. When the founding fathers treated it as a sacrifice rather than a self-enrichment scheme, they were able to create the most successful society in the history of mankind.

I’ve always been a believer in the 3,000 mile oil changes, my entire life. All of the cars I have ever owned currently or in the past, got oil changes at that interval and none of them had engine problems. Some cars need their oil to be changed that early because of them being turbo charged or simply having direct injection which really dirties the oil up so fast. My old 17 Chevy Impala I used to own with the 3.6L V6 oil would be so black after changing the oil every 3,000 miles you’d think something is wrong with the engine. Nope, there wasn’t, it’s the direct injection increasing soot and fuel dilution at a much faster rate than say a a typical multi-port fuel injected engine without it. I’m also a firm believer in full-Syn oil. Just because of its better lubrication properties and ability to protect, and cool the engine much better than a conventional oil. Going to Wally’s World to pick up a 5 quart jug of good full synthetic oil is key when it comes to saving money if you’re going to do it yourself. Obviously people that don’t do their own oil changes it’s going to be economically difficult for them to change their oil every 3,000 miles using high quality syn oil so I understand, but at the same time it’s their vehicles longevity we’re talking about here and if they want it to last many many years without trouble, it’s very important to follow those strict guidelines. I mean shoot, 3,000 mile oil change intervals was a normal thing which was a standard for decades until auto manufacturers changed the intervals on their own to help customers save money. But at the same time, they’re hoping that the owner is stupid enough to believe the longer intervals which will eventually cause serious engine problems and possible failure soon after the warranty ends. Thanks Rich for that segment, David from automotive press is a great channel to watch. Him being a former Toyota engineer he has the inside scoop of the industry and automotive plant quality. I’m no Toyota fanboy or anything, but I will have to admit, every Toyota or actually Lexus models I have ever owned never gave me any problems mechanically or electronically. Everything just works on them and they do last forever it seems. I am specifically talking about the old Toyotas from the 90’s and early 2000’s when their quality and reliability was excellent and they were in their prime as far longevity goes. The newer stuff I’m not sure of as I don’t have experience with them. To me new cars just feel cheaply made now with more and more flimsy plastics taking over in areas where metal used to be. Thinner sheetmetal, weaker bodies, thinner foam padding for seats, plastic engine components and so on. An old 80’s Town Car is built with so much better quality materials than today’s vehicles, and the 80’s wasn’t even a great decade for quality for Lincoln either.

Very nice info! I think the OEMs only care about the vehicle\drivetrain lasting inside the warranty period. After that, they want you to through away the vehicle and buy a new one. This why I think warranty periods are as short as they are. It they were longer, they'd have to design and build better vehicles. As it is, some of the OEMs are struggling within their warranty periods now.

Ford says my diesel oil should be changed every 10,000 miles, many people who have my engine say to change it every 7,500 miles, I always change the diesel oil every 5,000 miles or less. I do the same thing with my gasoline engines, change the oil every 3000 miles regardless of what other people say including the manufacture, they wont be paying for my repairs. Even when my big trucks sit for a year or 2 with little miles put on them since the last oil change, I immediately change the oil before putting them back on the road fulltime. I always changed the oil on my old Chevy and then on my 302 Mustang and Gen 1 Lightning between 2 and 3K. That old Chevy's oil would be pretty dark by 2K. When I bought an 03 Corolla I started to do the 2nd oil change at 3K and stopped because the oil looked new. Toyota calls for 5K. For 200K miles I used dino oil and 5K or a little less. Then dino oil got hard to find and Costco synthetic was cheaper so I made the switch. Now at 257K miles and the car still runs like new. Might burn 3/4 of a quart over 5K if I'm running it over 100. Under 80 it won't burn any. My guess is that the specific application makes a difference. The example here is low output without a turbo. My wife's 09 XRS 2.4L burns about a quart over 5K but the 2.4 is a known oil burner and she really botched the maintenance for about 75K before we met. That car is approaching 250K, still runs great, and has seen no increase in consumption for the last 150K+ miles. At least in the case of these Toyotas a 3K OIC is entirely unnecessary to run strong at a quarter million miles. Of course anyone's mileage may vary.

3000 to 5000 miles is a very good plan. I would not use the cheapest oil, but I wouldn't worry about getting the most expensive either. A budget fully synthetic oil {With all the proper quality standards} should safely get 3000 to 5000 miles. I would be more concerned about getting a high-quality oil filter that will last for longer than the time that you would be using it for. With 3k to 5k oil changes a good filter should do really well changing it every other oil change. Remember, as the filter starts to get dirty, it will filter smaller and smaller particles. Because of this, a brand-new oil filter will not filter as good as it does after it starts to get dirty. By the way, this Bossy Ford guy seems to have it together. Good channel.

@keithwiebe1787

Running too thick of oil when it gets colder could certainly be a no no. You may not get the oil to where it needs to go soon enough. I've seen problems when the Ford modular engines came out and people were running the thicker older oils (these engine were speced with 5w30 and later 5w20) they would actually run the rockers off because the lifters would pump up and hold valves open etc. It was a mess. And some early ones would prematurely wear out oil pressure relief valve in pump and it would stick and before you know it the oil filter would balloon. Variable cam sprockets don't like the wrong weight of oil in them either. Got to be careful.

I let dealer perform oil / filter service with Ford synthetic blend oil @ 1000 miles and 4000 miles and 8000 miles and now at 10000 miles , i switched to pure synthetic rather than synthetic blend Ford recommends as i think its broken in now and this engine needs all the protection it can get. Funny, I bought a Honda CB1100 motorcycle a few years ago on CL. Prior owner said, "Just changed the oil like 500 miles ago". (Yeah...ok). Since there's no dipstick, I wasn't able to check the oil level and the sight glass was not clear enough to see if the oil was old or new. It had a Fram filter on it, so I knew the oil had been changed at some point (the odometer had like 5,000 total miles). So, after a good test ride and inspection, I bought the bike because it was very low miles and in good shape otherwise. My sixth sense told me to go ahead and change the oil anyway, when I got home. My goodness, when the oil drained-out it was some of the worst I had ever seen! It looked like tar, and it took almost 30 minutes to drain out! I mean it flowed out really slow. It smelled bad, too. I put some new Valvoline motorcycle oil and a WIX filter on and rode it for about 1500 miles. Then I changed it again and it looked visibly better, and the oil flowed out in about 5 minutes. Then, about 2000 miles later, I changed it again and it looked a LOT better and flowed out faster. The Honda owner's manual states to change oil every 4000 miles and change the filter every 8000. That's a "no go" for me. I'm gonna keep changing the oil every 2000 miles and filter every 4000 from now on. These air-cooled engines get really hot. And I live in a hot desert area. Not gonna take any chances! Better to be safe than sorry.

Glad to see that the kitty is doing better. Keep saying the Pledge of Allegiance. It is most appreciated. Manufacturer's extended oil services and lifetime fluids claims are a two pronged attack to sell new vehicles. The consumer thinks they are saving money with extended services. Extended services are designed to ensure that once the car is paid off, the drivetrain is used up. The consumer then enters the showroom to purchase another new vehicle. The old rule of thumb was that a vehicle should last ten years. The new rule of thumb is a vehicle should last 5 years. 5 years is about the average amount of time it takes a person to pay off their vehicle loan.

The push for extended oil change intervals is often the result of emissions standards. While new oil standards have created a more stable lubricant and cars tend to run cleaner, I am amazed of the pressure that is saying, you can actually change your oil too often. Sure, as an example 2000 mile oil changes may not be necessary, but can anyone actually define it as too often? IOW will it harm your engine? The fact is many new cars, due to reduced friction rings, GDI and turbos are burning excessive oil from day one, Subaru engines are renowned for it, Toyota had a recall for it, as, and today BMW says it's normal for some of their new engines to burn 1qt of oil every 1000 miles. The problem with this is multifold. First an engine isn't designed to burn oil as cleanly as gas (actually a gas engine is not designed to burn oil at all, it is simply the result of engine operation), so oil deposits and sludge is left behind (one also has to question cat longevity). Imagine a BMW burning that much oil would require you to add 10qts of oil between 10,000 mile oil change intervals (BTW there is no restriction on how much oil a new, or any age is allowed to burn) and most new BMWs don't even have a dipstick. Considering how many people ignore maintenance reminders (idiot lights) it's a recipe for engine failure. It really seems that todays new car maintenance schedules are as much EPA directed as what is optimal for your car. Consider if the EPA directs a manufacturer that it must reduce the amount of waste oil generated by oil changes by extending oil change intervals, but there engineers recommend against it because the technology is not advanced far enough to make that possible and it will reduce the longevity of the engine, which direction do you think the manufacturing executives are going to take? What's best for the customer or what will generate the most profit and keep the EPA happy?

what manufacturers say and put in the service book for the service intervals is the maximum limit allowed between services in what they call perfect conditions. if you read what it says for hard or sirvire conditions in the small print usually beside a astros it brings back the service intervals. what is interesting is what they classify as this. hard or sirvire. nearly always your car is running over due because there isn't many people who drive in perfect conditions. like what has been said if you don't care about the car and it's only yours for 5 years it probably doesn't matter but if you do and you want it to last the way it was intended to by the manufacturer change the oil short not at the maximum.

That's what the Nissan GTR engine builder did say. He didn't even say full synthetic. It can be your standard certified blend. Decent filter also. You can do that for 25.00 or less! He hand-built the engines at Nissan in Japan. He should know.

Hi Rich, I have some treatment info I can share for your senior cat. We have found a successful treatment regimen with our vet that has significantly improved our cat's quality of life and returned her to an active cat with no issues high stepping, running, or climbing / jumping down. We started with opening one capsule of Cosequin Joint Health Supplement for Cats (any pet store should have this on hand) and mixing it in the morning wet food. Do this every day. Next add .08ml of Metacam (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) every 2-3 days. Metacam is available via your vet. It is currently only extensively trialed on dogs only but our cat did exceptionally well tolerating it (went up to 1ml doses) for several months until we could ween her off it (to protect kidney function) and replace it with: Finally a monthly injection of Solensia given by the vet. After about 6 weeks of Solensia, we only gave Metacam every 3-4 days or as observed need (limping or stiffness). Rather quickly we stopped Metacam all together and now just have the monthly injection along with the daily Cosequin powder in the wet food. If you have a good cat vet, the above can be inexpensive and deliver great results. I can connect your vet with mine if needed. I'm just sharing some great results we had and our vet said was new treatment. I have no financial interest in any of these products nor their manufacturers. Reach out if you need more info. Best of luck with your cat!

Enjoyed your video, some people just ha e to learn the hard way when there engine fails due to lack of maintenance. Believing in the "forever fluid".

I saw that video you shared in your video Rich. I don’t agree with changing the oil filter every other oil change. I believe the oil filter SHOULD BE changed every oil change, he also says “buy the cheapest oil”, I wouldn’t! Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is the way to go, along with a good quality oil filter, K&N Premium, Fram Ultra Synthetic, Mobil1 etc. 3,000 miles equals about 4800 km. I usually change my oil at about 5,000 km or so. Appreciate you sharing all the tips as always Rich, keep up with the Pledge my friend, and showing the pets, they’re family! Be blessed bro, take care, cheers!

I tried that cheap stuff and my over 200mile vehicle started ticking liking crazy! 😢. I changed the oil, put the usual oil and no tick. Maybe on a newer vehicle, sure. But yeah, my truck didn't like Quaker state oil at all! So I'm going to continue using redline, royal purple and or platinum pen

If I had a Nissan GTR I’d prob change my oil that frequently too since it’s likely be a garage queen and racking up 3k would prob take longer than a year. I’m sure the oil would be perfectly fine but it would be babied.

Thanks Rich for the sound advice. I have a ford escape 2L AWD diesel with the infamous PowerSHIT 6DTC450. It is regularly serviced every 14,000km by ford dealership with a transmission oil and filter, dif and transfer case oil change / service every 30,000Km (20,000 miles). I believe the dealership use cheap non synthetic or semi synthetic 5w30 oil because at 4,000km it is extremely thick black. Hence I change it post dealership service at 4,000km with a new filter and full synthetic 0w30 and again at 5,000km. At post dealership oil change change my 5,000km used full synthetic 0w30 oil is much, much, much, lighter in colour the dealership used oil at 4,000km . The car is 7 years old with 90,000km. I am hoping to keep it for another 8 years - 100,000km (assuming the PowerSHIT transmission last).

Every 10,000 Kilometres I take my car to Garage to get Oil and Oil Filter changed. Sump Plug with built in washer changed when needed, alwayz keep a spare one. Some Peeps change their Oil and Filter every 5,000 Kilometres or 7,5000 Kilometres. Depends on the Budget$ of car Owner. Oil and Filter change 2wice a year good for most cars and older cars every 3 months or 4 times per year.

Great 👍 job with the Cat & being patriotic American. 🙏 I've worked for two American owned companies early on & didn't matter politics as all were patriotic. This division is a Marxist plot to destroy from within & don't worry, it reached Australia as well. Stay patriotic, family, customs, tradition, and faith with country & nation. Once they divide you, everyone suffers. Stay free & united !

2003 Toyota 4runner with 418k miles and bought brand new! 4k miles oil and filter intervals! i buy the cheapest synthetic oil and filter ( SuperTech brand ) no leaks no oil burn and runs strong! i bet at this point my engine will outlast my interior and chassis bec of rust lol! they are right if you gonna trade the car or sell it before 100k miles follow the manual but if you keeping that thing until the wheels fall off, cheapest synthetic oil every 3-5k maxxx! people dont get it, if they recommend what engine builders / designers do at the OCI of this engines, they will last 15+ years and they wont sell new cars and parts for repair lol!

Manufacturers want you to do their recommended change intervals because that is what will eventually lead to engine failure way sooner and it’s more money for them because you have to purchase a new car

He's saying change the filter twice per oil change, not the other way around. The translator got that wrong. No way he's saying to leave the filter on there for 6K miles. Paper filters need changing.

Even on my ford 3.5...it's full synthetic and a motorcraft filter every 3000 mi. Its cheap and easy. Maculoco does many water pumps and timing chains on 70k cars...and all of them admitted that their maintenance and intervals weren't kept up on.

I have a 1000whp gtr I definitely change the oil every 1000 miles, it gets black pretty quickly with bigger turbos I don't take the chance and I use only redline, also I only drive my gtr probably 1000 miles a year so I won't be changing oil every month, I change the oil on my camry every 2k miles, it only cost me $30 dollars for a 5 gallon jug pennzoil ultra and takes less than 30min for me to do it so why not

I mean more routine maintenance in shorter intervals is usually key. I have been workimg on cars since i was 9 with my first field car. Always have changed at 3,000. Only car that i haven't is the one i have now. My grandparents gave me their Journey and it was dealer maintained the whole time. They changed the oil every 8000 and i just don't like that. So i have met in the middle and try to do one every 5000-5500

You building a filter tester? Saw one and found out how a fram xg crumbled in my old country rig. Do not remember if motor flush was involved. It thumped and rattled. Molasses black oil. Fram tg is coming off my new 2000 f250 with 250000 or so miles. Not new, just runs like it with 3000 mile oil changes. I just ordered ford oem filter.hope it is still USA.I change biannual.

Lets do a calculation: Oil change every 10000 miles and the engine lasts 150,000 miles-15 oil changes. Doing the oil change at 3000 miles equals 50 oil changes. Extra cost ost of doing 35 oil changes using excellent quality oil on sale in your yard or garage is between $800 and $1500. The cost of replacing an engine at 150,000 miles is $6-10000. We all know that many engines will last 300000 miles. The math is quite simple. This same calculation goes for the other liquids in the vehicle. For example; when should you change your lifetime AT fluid or differential oil?

The only reason car manufacturers want you to change your oil past 5000 miles or even 3000 miles is because they want the car to wear out at 100K-150K miles or even sooner so you either have to pay a lot to fix your engine or buy another car. I started changing my oil at 2000 miles because I noticed even at 2000 miles, the oil is already pretty dark. Sure, technically the oil is not bad, but it's a small price to pay compare to fixing the engine or by another car.
