John, I really enjoy your videos. They're informative. You present your ideas and concepts in a way in which people normally speak to one another. I hope your business continues to be prosperous and that you keep making these great videos. I'll keep watching. I especially like the Leica vids. I'm a long time Canon shooter currently going very deeply down the Leica rabbit hole. If the SL3 could AF like my R5 I'd probably be 100% Leica. Maybe one day. Best to you!

5:04 do you think the APO 35 and 50 E-mount lenses (non-adapted) would be as impressive on the Sonys as their M-mount counterparts on the Leicas?

KZitemr Julia Trotti said she likes the 50mm better for her portraits because she has a flat face. She also shoots the 35mm a lot also for her fashion photos. I guess it depends on the bone structure of a persons face what lens will work best for them.
@privatebydesign1808

Not really. It depends on where you stand not the focal length, compression is a myth disguising focal length. To get ‘compression’ move back further from your subject, it really is as simple as that. To prove this to yourself take a picture with a 50 and a 35 from the same place and crop the 35 image to the same framing as the 50, the two images are identical.

@@privatebydesign1808 I know that I saw the Fstops video on this years ago. But Julia Trotti is very close when doing headshots. They kind of have this fun cartoon look to them.

I have no problem grabbing a 35mm lens on a full-frame camera for environmental portraits and group portraits.

I recently use more the 35 than the 50 for portraits, especially when on location. It needs more attention for the composition (what you have in the image) and also for the choice of the location in general. The next step is 21 mm for portrait, I made some shootings with 21 and it's great and special!

One observation: The Voigtlander VM lenses (35 apo/50 apo) are known weak performers when adapted to Sony E mount bodies. The Voigtlander apo lenses in native Sony E mount are computed to account for the Sony's thicker-than-Leica sensor filter stack and, consequently, perform brilliantly. Do they perform as well as the VM variants on Leica bodies? Couldn't say. I own the 35, 50, and 110 Voigtlander apos in Sony mount.

100%. The native VM adapted are not good at all on the Sony bodies. Not bad on Nikon at all. But on the 60mp M11 - pure perfection for my needs.

I think there’s a very big difference between shooting a portrait and shooting a headshot or just shooting a picture of someone! When it comes to use of lens!

For me it’s based on the style of the shot, not the focal length of the lens.

Congratulation for this topic, I moved from 85mm to 50 for most portraits and add more an more of 35mm in the process, 35mm brings this different perspective that makes the photos standing out. Also great for environmental portraits as it brings more of the background in the frame.

Sometimes you have to watch out with the wider lens for example when the girls bring up their arms their elbows can sometimes point out to much on the wider lens. I made this mistake once. Simple fix just move back a little or use a longer lens.

Interesting comment you made in the beginning; you don't like the compression as much as you used to when you were younger. What do you think drove that? I have found that a decade of separate and suddenly these amazing 75mm, 90mm, 100mm lenses no longer look very natural to me for human subjects. But they sure used to. The good news is with the money I am saving not buying a 90AA I can go on vacation lmao.

I think it is just that, unnatural. When we were younger, it was more about us and our photography, now that we are older and no better, it’s more about the client and what looks best on them.

Maybe those gazillions of smartphone selfies - wide angle from a very close distance- we have seen made the wider angle look more common? I never understood that there is a correct distance, from which a face looks correct. I never liked the overcompressed flat look.

She is wrong. You are right! She is a beautiful young lady. I am curious, the fact that you are using such a large megapixel camera, do you crop tight in the editing process? So as not to deal with the distortion of a 35mm close up. I have found on my little 20megapixel allows me to crop in editing. I did enjoy watching this one...
