An alternative use is also to dump all the party's stuff they can't hold onto a willing, hopefully paid, NPC. Turn them into gas, and put them in a jar. It only lasts 1 hour, but the sheer amount of stuff you can turn into gas is a lot.

Combat wise your going to use this to pull allies out of a bad situation or solve a puzzle if the combat requires it. The main draw is not the slow fly speed but the resistance to non magic damage and advantage on many saves. This spell is basically tailor made to counter traps. Most traps that deal physical damage are non magical. Crossbow traps, pit falls, spike traps ect... are usually not magical in nature. The ones that are tend to be strength, dex or con saves. Your gaseous form would prevent you from triggering most traps. You would be too light to trigger trip wires or pressure plates. You also can't fall. Casters tend to lack the hp and stats to deal with traps and dangerous areas. This spell basically doubles their hp in those areas. You cant trip and fall off a mountain or fall into poisonous swamp water. Most traps and hazards are going to have little effect against this spell. It really shines in exploration. A caster can use this on themselves to keep protected while navigating through dangerous environments or trap filled dungeons. Its also useful for navigating battle field hazards.

This spell is great for Pact of the Chain Warlocks or Necromancers since they get to have minions/familiars with thumbs so they can manipulate stuff the character can't as a gas.

One of my few gripes with 5e is how it handles anything incorporeal... RAW someone could "punch" or maybe even "trip" a *cloud of gas* although in my games I'd probably rule against it... I'm on the fence about resistance vs immunity as well. I think whether it's a wraith or ghost or gas vapor, nonmagical attacks shouldn't hit it. But at the same time I can see it being a balance issue

I think people don't really get a good idea of the intention of this spell. It doesn't turn you into a swarm of individually self-sentient particles, but into a gaseous smoky version of yourself. You have a gaseous FORM. It's still physical, just smoky, and not fleshy. You still have a whole body, just in a gaseous state. That means that chunks (or wafts, rather) of it getting taken away still does damage. It doesn't just float back any more than you could slap your blood and meat back into your arm after an axe goes into it. Pretend you're being held together by little stretchy magical rubber bands between the gas particles. If those particles get smacked away, it's still pieces of you getting removed just at a lower surface volume (less flesh and armor sliced).

@@pr9039 I get the idea, but considering you're vaporous enough to go through small openings, resistance to non-magical damage seems quite limited
@princevesperal

@@pr9039 But the spell makes your gaseous body so malleable that you can squeeze through tiny holes and cracks without damage. And yet, someone could kill you by... strangulation? Someone could grapple you and wrestle you down? How does that make any sense? If anything, this spell should make you vulnerable to winds and spells like "Gust". I think that was the case in previous editions: winds would push you away like the current of a river would a swimmer. A fan blowing your body away should be more dangerous to you than a stick passing through you.

This would be really cool as a reaction. I kind of wonder how useful this would be in most circumstances though because the fly speed is so slow. I can't imagine being able to escape much without being killed from the many rounds of ranged attacks, especially if they're spells or if you're already at low health trying to use this as a quick getaway.

It might be a good idea to cast Unseen Servant right before Gaseous Form, so you can still interact with objects in some capacity. You simple have to mentally direct it. You could even make yourself a little bit faster by jumping into a jar and having the Unseen Servant carry you at the speed of 15 feet. Also, how funny would it be to cast this under water? Rules as Written, is should be like being burried in the ground: "[the target] it treats liquids as though they were solid surfaces". Rules as Intended, the target should probably become a giant bubble and irresistibly be pushed up to the surface (I would treat it like "falling" upwards). I could see this being useful for a character stuck under the sea, who cannot swim. Maybe combine this spell with an enchantment to make an aquatic foe "willing" and take them out of combat non-lethally. They couldn't come back under the water until the end of the spell either. It could also be a way for aquatic (non-amphibious) creatures to explore the surface.

Can the wind carry a creature in gaseous form? For example, there is a wind that goes 60 mph, do you also go 60 mph since you are gaseous?
@TDSFounder

The only real downside would be because of how slow the fly speed is. The fact that you can't cast spells while in that state means you can't even speed yourself up by using something like Gust of Wind on yourself. But if you don't have Misty Step or need to get through some tight areas, it's useful admittedly. .

Probably because it's not a mist or fog, but a gas, and requires "a puff of smoke" as the component. It's more of an arcane-ish thing than a natural thing, and the Druid has VERY competitive spells in a wide variety of forms besides this one.

By being a monk (yes the movement boost still applies), dashing every turn for 20 ft movement, having a familiar carry you in a jar. I'm sure there are other ways, but these are the ones I could think of.
