Honestly if you think shakespeare is a god at writing tragedies, then you really haven't met the chinese. I mean some of the writings make the author seem sadistic.

Why have you not included the very popular legend of the " White Snake" that became a human beauty named "Bai Su-Jin" ? This story had even been made into a ballet drama ( in ancient Chinese costumes) , & it was performed overseas in the west. I saw it in Toronto, Canada in the early 1990's ! And the legend has been told in many Chinese movie remakes & every performing arts format - opera, dance drama, concert,...etc. Legend: Bai Su-Jin met her beloved scholar Xu Xian at West Lake. They got married & lived happily. Bai worked as a medical healer to help the poor & cured people of diseases. Her husband continued to work hard in his studies for the Imperial Exam. But later, her true identity was discovered by the Buddhist High Priest Fa-Hai who eventually locked her up inside the Tower of Thunder, & ordered her shocked husband to become a monk in order to receive redemption !! Bai Su-Jin had no choice but to fight the High Priest with all her powers. She brought on a big flood that drowned the Temple, & it also destroyed many lives, farms & livelihood in the nearby area.

The interpretation of Meng Jiang Nu's name is incorrect. She is not the daughter of an Mr. Meng but rather Mr. Jiang, the middle character in her name. The character for "Meng" in classical Chinese denotes the eldest of children in a family. Ergo her name means "eldest daughter of the Jiang family" and not "the daughter of Mr Meng and Ms. Jiang"

First off, your comment only barely makes sense. I know quite a bit about both countries, their histories (including their shared histories in ancient and modern times) but that doesn't mean that I know all of the holidays and all of the stories for both cultures. I've never been around for 7/7 celebrations or heard my Chinese friends tell that story, so my context was from my experience with the Japanese holiday. Thanks for trying to be rude though after I made a genuine comment of appreciation.

I have not done a single thing in this that would qualify me as acting like a 'know it all'. My first comment thanked them for expanding my knowledge and my second comment stated pretty clearly that I don't know everything. And please, just stop trying to 'teach' me history because: 1. I live in the U.S. currently and am quite educated on it's history. 2. I have already mentioned that I studied the history of the Chinese and Japanese peoples, including their shared histories and am aware of their origins. 3. You clearly haven't actually understood a single comment I have made thus far. 4. You are exhibiting the exact qualities you are accusing me of and are being rude, even if you don't realize it, because of reason number 3.

The story you told on Niu Lang and Zi Nu is inaccurate. The buffalo told Niu Lang about the 7 fairies from heaven will be taking their bath at a lake, Niu Lang went to peep at the fairies bathing themselves. As advised by the buffalo, he stole the clothes of the youngest fairy (Zi Nu) and when time to go back to heaven, the Zi Nu was unable to do so. Niu Lang brought her home and married her. It was many years later (after having 2 kids), Zi Nu found her clothes and upon wearing it, she managed to float back to heaven, leaving Niu Lang and the 2 children on earth. So if you consider this version, Niu Lang was a peeping Tom and Kidnapper, the buffalo was a partner in crime while Zi Nu is suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

Almost all ancient romance stories have to end in tragedy regardless of culture. Mostly because romantic love is seen as something done outside of marriage. (marriage is a contract between two families rather than two people) Romance must end in tragedy so that make sure the beneficial arranged marriages can be considered the practical and stable option.

The first story, from what I heard from my mom, the girl actually committed suicide by banging her head on the tombstone rather than the tomb opening up, they turned into butterflies and her fiancé also killed himself out if grief. For the second story, my mom told me that every time there's a rainbow, that's when the couple see each other and supposedly once a year, which I don't believe but I mean I don't see rainbows that often anyways in California.

In the one I heard, the emperor wanted to marry her because she was very beautiful. She agreed on the condition that her husband was given a proper funeral and honored so the emperor did that. After the funeral she said she would rather die than be unfaithful to her husband or something as killed herself ( jumping into the sea ) I personally like this ending better hehe xD

Do the story of the Double Happiness Character: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Happiness_(calligraphy)#/media/File:Double_happiness1.jpg . The story I'm familiar with is one where a scholar en route to his civil service exams falls ill but is is nursed back to health by a beautiful woman. She gives him an uncompleted poem, a couplet, as a keepsake. He takes the exam and aces it. He is given an additional exam question which consists of completing a poem with a couplet. To his amazement, the couplets complete each other. With lucrative employment assured, he goes back to seek the girl for marriage. . . . and they live happily ever after.

OMG where's the story where the woman waited for her husband (because something happened) so long in the same position that she became a rock and is now called Wang Fu Shi 望夫石 - the Yearning Husband Stone?
