SAME! Got my dream job but the work load is so overwhelming! Yesterday I slipped into my depression, the day before I was really impulsive and came out to my mom without planning, and got terrible migraines at night. I tried a little bit of self care with mindfulness and a wet cloth for my head, and today I used one of those massage chairs, and it helped so much! I still feel under the weather, but I'll see my doctor on Thursday and I'll go to the movies tomorrow. I got to talk to my mom too, my last conversation with her was just weird. Hugs to you, best of luck in your journey!

Biggest thing I remember from my time in college during my Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate is time management. You can get it all done and have time for other things if you are good with your time and prioritize. This does become more difficult though if 1) you have a long commute 2) You are working more than 15 hours a week at another job that is stressful or draining. Otherwise - I basically saw that time management was the difference between success and failure and mental health in college.

One of the hardest things for most persons with a nervous disorder like me is to consistently and consciously slow down muscular actions. This includes trying to slow down your speech, typing on your phone, chores around the house, walking, opening tamper proof packages and a myriad of other tasks that can be tension causing. For example, the natural tendency for me when I try to get the plastic off a bottle of Boost is to get frustrated and more aggressive but a better strategy is to realize that you can take as much time as you need and slow down. This saves a great deal of pressure on your nerves. The problem is that unless we are aware of it we revert to our old tense habits so it requires constant practice and awareness (or mindfulness is the new catch phrase.) Unfortunately too, there are situations like driving, caregiving or a service job like a restaurant server where often one has to be at a heightened alertness. I think though in general we are more tense in our spare time than we need to be because we rush too much when we absolutely don't need to. I see this issue even in my relatively well friends and family and certainly in myself. So maybe today take a little more time walking down stairs, feeding your pet and put a little more time between taps on your cellphone. Your nerves will be happier and healthier for it.

One thing that recharged my batteries when I was in high school was going backpacking. We went backing for four days every Spring break and every Fall break. When I backpacked I wanted to get completely away from any sign of civilization. We could do this at a place we went to in Arkansas. One time we were exploring the area right at the base of a cliff. Water never reached that place, and there were about six inches of the driest dust at the foot of the cliff. We found part of a shoe, a part of a kettle, and an old mining newspaper that was dated 1906. The guy was looking for diamonds. There are a few diamonds in Arkansas. I'd like to go back to that place.

There is a simple totally free Tree Task app that I use for planning more complex projects.. it is really good for top down planning.. I have a list for places I have to go and sublists for what I have to do when I get there. I also keep a separate list of my "roles" like being a caregiver, husband, car owner etc.. and put tasks beneath those. It helps to split your to-do list into separate roles because otherwise tasks can get a bit jumbled.

Can you please do a video about burnout and school? Most of the info out there is only for people with jobs, not school, and especially with university, you can't just take a day off, or have a free weekend to do something fun. Even with taking 3 courses a semester (instead of 5) I can't get anywhere and keep failing classes that I shouldn't. As much as I wish I could drop out half way through the semester, it's really expensive, and I would like to get a degree eventually. Like not bringing work home that was mentioned, well school is designed to take your work home, that's why it's called homework. I do have some health issues I'm dealing with, but school is really hard, especially when the only space in the house quiet enough to work on homework, is my room. My stepdad is the most annoying human I've ever had to deal with, as his habbits, are the exact same things that drive me crazy. I'm glad I live with my mom because she makes me good food because I'm too exhausted to anything else. Especially those papers that take a week to write... University goes against (or doesn't allow) everything said here, and I'm really thinking about part time.

Hi Kati, (I wrote this on the recovery video as well, but was kind of late so I'll give it a new shot. Otherwise sorry for the spam) I'm currently recovering from what I'd like to call a cognitive burnout or a stress related fatigue syndrome that happened almost 2 and a half years ago, and I'm finally getting back to a some of the capabilities I had before the "burnout"(without getting crippled by depression, anxiety or fatigue). Resulting from not having worked for almost 2 years, regular check ups with doctors, and a lot of C.B.T. (Cognitive behavioral therapy) and now finally being able to do some rehabilitative work training for 2h a day. But I find it a little hard to talk about in English. In Swedish we use the word "Utmattningssyndrom" which translates to fatigue syndrome, but as that is something else and this being more closely related to "burnout" (or a more severe version of it (or even occupational burnout as the symptoms seem to be similar) it's a little hard to discuss in English as you don't seem to have a clear diagnosis for this. It falls under F43.8A in the ICD-10 as "Other reactions to severe stress" and since I personally know a fair few who also have been diagnosed with the same, it makes it even stranger to me that we don't hear more Americans talk about it, where the discussion seem to stop at "burnout". So I would love to hear you talk about this form of "burnout" more, as you in the US aren't know for your pristine working conditions and I can't be the only one of your followers who suffers from this. Also, thanks for your great work

#KatiFAQ hi Kati! English is not my native language so I hope you can understand 😅... How do I know if I have a personality disorder? Last year I went to a psychiatrist for like 2 months (hahaha) and he told my mother that I have BPD and depression (that happened because i had a suicide attempt so he had to talk to my mother when i was in the hospital), I also have ADHD and anorexia nervosa. Then I went to another psychiatrist and my mother asked him if I really do have BPD but he told us that I don’t... so now I don’t know what to believe :( I’ve been reading a lot of this and seen all your videos, but i just feel like it has nothing to do with me. In my opinion, the only criteria I meet is the suicide attempt (but it has just been once in all my life!) and fear of abandonment, so what can i do? Do i have to talk about it with this new psychiatrist again? Thank you kati:)!! I love all your videos 💕💕

Ana Sánchez DEFINITELY talk to your psychiatrist about it since it’s clearly bothering you. If you don’t know where to start, you can read your comment out aloud. In the DSM, which is the clinical book used to identify diagnosis in America, self harm is only listed under BPD, therefore sometimes if a person self harms or attempt suicide, professionals will assume they have BPD since that’s where the symptoms are listed in the DSM. Hope that helps! Kati talks about it in this video! kzitem.info/news/bejne/lYlj22aCnImXnIo

Also blame your boss for being absenttee and mean if all he does is increase your workload. Be prepared to quit your job.
