Isn't it interesting how leverguns just seem right.. I have many in many calibers and in the hunting camp every fall we have levergun weekend. No scopes, no bolt actions or semis. Just your wits, your patience, and your eyeballs. You know you earned when the deer is down under a 100yds and it used all your gifts as a hunter to get the job done. It's my favorites weekend that I tend to make most of the season....When the boys go back to their chocie weapons, I'll still walk the woods with the levergun. There is just something magical walking the deer and bear woods with a historical weapon like our forebearers did. Not that the others aren't fabulous, but, the Ubertis are truly beautiful firearms.

I can relate with the eyes getting older. I stopped shooting my Henry 44 mag. a couple years ago because the stock sights we're just too small for my eyes, it wasn't a problem 10 years earlier. Someone suggested skinner peep sights so I gave it a try and wow what a difference. I think I can actually shoot it better now than when I bought it. It wasn't until I put the peep sight on that I noticed the huge difference in elev. even at close range with different bullet weights. Now I have to keep a note with rifle reminding me where to set the back sight based on bullet weight, the memory is going too...

The one observation I made, is that the .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .44/40 had obvious passthroughs, the .45 Colt dumped all its energy inside the target, almost tearing the book in half. That's at standard velocity, using Ruger Only loads in a Model 92 would produce far different results.

The box ballistics for the 357Mag , 44 Mag and 45 Colt are for pistol length barrels, The box ballistics for the 44-40 would be from a rifle length barrel. Rifle velocity for the 357 Mag 158 gr would be around 1550+ fps; the 44 Mag 240gr rifle velocity would be around 1450+ fps; the 250 gr 45 Colt rifle velocity would be around 1000 fps. I personally hand load 45 Colt 255 gr to 1000 fps (14,000 psi) from a 5.5 inch Single Action revolver barrel, and that loading makes right at 1250 fps from a 24" octagon barrel Rossi 1892. I chose that smokeless velocity for 45 Colt hand loads because that duplicates the ballistics of the original 40 grain black powder load for the 45 Colt from 1873. Modern 45 Colt factory loads are WAY under powdered, unless you buy specialty ammo from Buffalo Bore or Underwood.

(but that's been a while).. I've had 5 eye surgeries though- probably can't hit the broad side of a barn now.. Good video. First off, I’m leaning towards buying a Henry Big Boy lever action rifle in either .357 Magnum or .45 colt next year . After seeing the aftermath of those encyclopedias, I’ll get the rifle in .357 Magnum. Secondly (Historic Alert), speaking of 44-40, that was the preferred choice of Legendary Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa. Pancho usually armed himself with a pair of Colt Bisley Single Action revolvers and a Winchester Lever rifle, all chambered in 44-40, so that he could carry only one type of ammunition (a great tactical move, if you ask me). I could only imagine the agonizing deaths that Pancho’s enemies suffered, when being hit by those 44-40 rounds, once again, based on the encyclopedia ballistics. Yikes!!!

@@bigtrucklittlerv7969 not sure specifically, but my guesstimate is that 9gr of unique would give about 900 fps out of a 7.5 revolver. If you could fit 40gr of 3f (usually can hardly fit 35gr) it'd do around 1000 out of a 7.5 inch. Slightly hotter than the unique load. A more realistic charge of 35gr would be around that unique load
@brianlee6849

That was fun. I think the difference between the velocity on the box with the 44 mag and the 4440 was the 44 mag velocity was listed for a pistol and the 4440 velocity was probably listed for a rifle. But the actual velocity for the 44 mag from the rifle was much higher than the 4440. I also love the 4440 I'm planning on getting a 73 with a 4440. Do you reload load for the 4440? Both the .44-40 and .45LC are down loaded. This is not uncommon due to older guns available in those calibers and because of the lighter CAS loads for competition. The original .44-40 loads would have been closer to 1400fps in a rifle. Those would be standard BP pressure loads. the later rifle only loads that they had for a time would be even faster. With proper loads any one of those would be serious medicine.
@Diemerstein

The .357 and .44 magnum are full power rounds, the 44-40 and 45 colt are not. If you wanna compare the .44 magnum to a full power 45 colt, you need to load 45 colt +P. A buffalo bore deer grenade would have pulverized that book even worse than the .44 magnum.
@boedude8496

that 44 was anything but full power. you can push a 240gr around 1600fps without getting into +p. but yes, standard 45 colt is a low pressure round. loaded to max +p (that i have seen published) it is very similar to 44 mag max standard. buf bore does make a wicked heavy +p load

They don't do .44-40 any justice these days. My Stoeger Shooter's Bible of 1957 list .44-40 ammo velocities(both Winchester/Western and Remington/Peter's) as 965fps for revolvers and 1350fps for rifles. You have to handload to appreciate what .44WCF is capable of though there is one exception. It appears that Buffalo Bore is coming out with .44-40 ammo that is like the old full power black powder loads and then some. It will be safe enough for groupI pressure level rifles and hand guns(13,000 CUP I believe).

The 45 velocity was a lame SAS pistol velocity and not loaded up to be used in a fair comparison. Nor is the 1873 of the same strength as the Rossi for example and cannot handle the hotter loads.
