Most of use use either the 55gr. FMJ or 62 gr. Green Tip in 5.56 Nato due to availability. I would like to see this kind of testing on these rounds.

Great detail. It shows what I have always known. No guarantee what a bullet will do on impact. Sometimes great sometimes not so much. 308 more so then the 556. Thanks for the retest.

Viewers also take a look at the Small Caliber High Velocity tests used by Eugene Stoner to create the .223/5.56 cartridge. And view the Stoner interviews. That are here on KZitem!! Treasure trove of information.

Using open tip as compared to ball open tip will expand and dump more energy making the jug explode

Excellent again. Begs the question. What about 30-06?

This seems to prove out that if you want a violent jug shredding reaction when impacting a 5 gal water jug just increase the velocity and by way of that the energy. I enjoy watching explosive high speed impacts from 22 caliber bullets especially the 220 Swift, 22-250, 22-284. In the 1990's I used to shoot Federal Gold Metal Match 308 win from a Remington PSS with a 26" heavy barrel and it was impressive for its accuracy and consistency.

great detailed video hard to find these type of videos. the 85gr looks like a good hitting round not sure if it would have much more to offer at longer distances. the 77gr is just a beast of a round and looks like a better option to get that damage.... looking forward to the next video.

Thanks for your compliments and for providing some good food for thought. The 77 grain seems to be the way to go for energy dump onto a target but the accuracy of the 85 grain was uncanny. I wonder if the velocity from the 85 grain would be increased by using a 20" or 22" bolt action. Also, Nosler is now making a factory load 85 grain rdf bullet in a 22 nosler. It has better velocity than the .556 and the "rdf" bullet they are using has a better ballistic coeficient than the 85 grain that was featured in this vid. Wondering if we should explore that next or maybe go with a 6.5 lineup...

Use the Hornady 150 grain 3,000 ft per second 308 and we'll see a difference.

I was a little surprised by the difference between the 77 gr and the 85 gr 5.56 rounds. It would seem that the individual construction is significantly different, the 77 being a “softer” bullet. The extra velocity of the 308 made a definite difference in its wound potential. Excellent production and explanation of the test. 👍👍

I agree about the likely difference in bullet construction. I have experience with both Sierra and Barnes OTM bullets, and they definitely react differently upon striking. I actually prefer the Barnes OTM on animals. The other difference here is that the Barnes here was loaded far more conservatively regarding pressure than the 77 grain load was in the last video. The 85 could have been stepped up 125-150 fps and still been in pressure spec.

Interesting. Didn't realize there were 85 grain 5.56 out there. Seems like 77 grain is the sweet spot maybe...

There may be some truth to the idea that the 77 grain is the sweet spot.

Definitely a nice find. The longer projectile might not fit in all magazines though. But one in the chamber for hunting quite possible.
@snorman1911

@@hoffpbass does it extend farther out? I was under the impression that the bullet extended further into the case. A longer overall cartridge would be problematic with freebore size wouldn't it?

Love it, would love to see that Sig 77gr elite performance ammo out of a 20" or even a 24" barrel for this test against the 168gr or 175gr GMM from an equal barrel AND having the caps glued down. (The last part was a bit of a joke)

Great work glad i got to see pt2. Some people just want to see their choice win and all others lose. I guess wanting to be right and egos get in the way. All rounds are good for what they are..

I think the cap question was fair. I think pointing out the barrel length difference was reasonable. 556 NEEDS velocity to be effective. That is why 18 inch 556 is more effective than 16-14.5inch for sure! I wonder how both rounds would perform at 16 inch barrel lengths? Honestly i wouldn't want to be hit by EITHER round😂. Curiosity is good when a bullet that has so many MORE ft-lbs of energy seems to perform in a less spectacular fashion. People will notice differences between tests, though i don't understand why people didn't believe his fps result on the 77gr 556. That just seems petty.... I mean, it was interesting enough for him to do a follow up video on it wasn't it? 👍
