It's honestly nuts how perfect that album is. And how incredibly ahead of it's time it sounds. There are several Talking Heads songs/albums that I honestly think would turn heads if released today as new modern music. Nothing about it sounds dated somehow. There's PLENTY of music I love that is great, but sounds SO of the time it came from. INXS album "Kick" is one that immediately comes to mind. It sounds hilariously late 80s. Almost like it was made today...in an attempt to distil that late 80s, scooped mids, gated reverb, antiseptically clean, quasi new-jack-swing sound. But still a great album. But then there are other albums....that are objectively timeless and sound like they're from every decade...or no decade. Remain in Light is one of those. I'd also say....Revolver(but _not_ Sgt Pepper). Also much of the music of The Police. And maybe Tool's Aenima and Lateralus. OH....and Animal Collective's brilliant Merriweather Post Pavilion. Albums that don't scream "This is when I was made!" and instead work simply due to the music being effortlessly excellent.

But a whole slew of bands, like Television, the Dictators, Suicide, Hot Lunch, 8 Eyed Spy, etc are harder to categorize. Great New Wave Top 5! Parallel Lines is one of the LP’s that is classic from start to finish. You didn’t point out that ‘Fade Away Radiate’ featured Robert Fripp on Lead G. Also, your emphasis on TH Remain In Light is justified! An incredibly bold production! It’s ‘flip side’ being the monumental ‘My Life In The Bush of Ghosts’ which was also Produced by Byrne/Eno at the same time! Also, it seems New Order straddled Post Punk (Movement) and New Wave (Power, Corruption and Lies).

How bout a guide to Elvis Costello?
@chrisdelisle3954
6 жыл бұрын
Here's your guide: pick up This Year's Model, Armed Forces, Get Happy and Trust. Listen to them. A LOT. Marinade. Pick up King of America because you're interested in hearing what he can do with a more acoustic album. If you like those 5 albums - which are about as great as he gets - move on to Imperial Bedroom and Blood And Chocolate. While those two aren't as consistent (to my ears...I know there are many who think Imperial Bedroom is incredible), they do have some of his highest highs. If you're still onboard the Elvis Costello train, you might be wondering why I hadn't suggested My Aim Is True. I just never liked it. If you do like it - I'm sure at least a million people have - more power to you. The next tier of records I would suggest include Almost Blue (for some good country-rock), Spike (for a wide variety of music), Brutal Youth (for a more "Attractions"-like sound), All this Useless Beauty and maybe When I Was Cruel. If you like those, you don't need my help anymore. Just move on to whatever else he's recorded. There are some hit-and-miss records out there. Some people think (insert record I haven't mentioned here) is one of the greatest records they've ever heard. But those first five albums I mentioned are just about perfect and the only albums I'd recommend to everyone.

Skylarking aaaaa!!!! ^o^ The way you made the introduction to New Order was funny, like you were desperately trying to make them recognised in their own right, and bury any of the troubled existence of Joy Division. It goes to show how dependent New Order is on the context of Joy Division, and how the shadow of Ian Curtis still looms dark and tall above them.

With the exception of POWER, CORRUPTION, & LIES (which I've never heard all the way through), I can certainly vouch for the excellence of all these albums. FREEDOM OF CHOICE was one of the very first albums I ever purchased, so it is particularly close to my heart. :) My Gnu Wave Top 5: 1) OUTLANDOS D'AMOUR - The Police (1978) 2) MY AIM IS TRUE - Elvis Costello (1977) 3) Q: ARE WE NOT MEN? A: WE ARE DEVO! - Devo (1978) 4) S/T - The B-52's (1979) 5) PARALLEL LINES - Blondie (1978)

I would have thought a British chap would have included our arguably best New Wave band, XTC. Making Plans For Nigel: an absolute New Wave classic. Far more interesting than anything than anything New Order ever did. No Costello? Have a listen to This Year's Model. Keep up the good work. I enjoyed your post-punk 5.

Hmmm.... The problem with this genre is that there are way too many to choose from. But you made some solid choices. :)

Curious what's the difference between New Wave and Indie?
@gliddofglood

@@mistymangham4410 Nobody said Indie in the early 80s,. And these bands weren't hidden gems - they were massively successful. Parallel Lines was stuffed full of chart-toppers. The Police has been mentioned. Blue Monday was (and is) the world's biggest 12" single. So they weren't really "Indie". The music genre at the time was "Indie" if you like. Devo were more obscure, and Talking Heads were more of a student band - intellectual (certainly lyrics-wise). None of the well-known Talking Heads hits were anything like their best songs, in my view. They were just the radio-friendly ones. Radios were not going to be playing "Born Under Punches" - more's the pity.

Surprised you didn’t put on any of Elvis Costello’s first couple of albums. They were more guitar focused but still pretty new wave
