It always amazes me how many people don’t have even the most basic radio (and I’m in Florida)❗️ PEOPLE ‼️Get an emergency radio ‼️ There are tons of different ones out there in all price ranges . Don’t only rely on your smartphone. You may loose internet, or may be unable to charge your phone. Look at the price and features that fit your wants and needs. These are some great choices here. If you want more information on these( or other radio), all of these have been fully reviewed by any number of people who do nothing but review radios and post them on line. 📻👍🙂‼️

Do you know by any chance how do you change the rechargeable batteries in FRX5? I guess in a few years they will be gone and need replacement

You missed the best one. CCrane Solar Observer. I bought one a few years ago. The reception is exceptional, it has a backlit dial and the audio is superb. It has a replaceable rechargeable battery pack, or 3 AA batteries. It will charge (slowly) using the solar panel. And yes, it has a crank for charging.

Depending on the location of one's emergency kit - such as in a car or unheated/cooled garage - operating temperatures and storage temperatures may be a consideration. Similarly, some lithium batteries can go longer than others without adverse consequence from non-use whereas others will become unusable in less than a year if they are not used (charged/cycled) with any regularity. With that in mind, a question: Has anyone, anywhere tested these units for how well they work after they are subjected to storage or harsh-use conditions? Many of us outside the prepper community don't think much about an emergency kit until we need it - at which time a lot of these products that rely on the rechargeable battery to accept a charge from the solar panel or the hand crank will be dead! Making matters worse, some of these emergency radios have non-replaceable or proprietary (difficult to find) replacement batteries. I am old enough to remember when buying any type of radio would entail a full page of specs. Today, by contrast, there is too little in the way of specs published online or even in the user manuals. Even basic questions about storage and operating temps are left for users to guess at! How is this lack of attention to detail in any way appropriate for a critical piece of emergency use equipment? Question: Is there ANY radio that offers 1) better-than-average (sensitive/selective) AM/FM tuner, is 2) rugged enough to survive a drop from a table (ABS plastics, rubberized corner guards and a metal-reinforced crank), 3) offers some weatherization (can be used outdoors in less-than-ideal elements), and 4) features a long-life rechargeable battery that can withstand longer-than-average periods of non-use (as would be expected in an emergency kit)? My go-to product when I began to assemble my home emergency kit was the C.Crane CC Solar Observer but I was shocked to find it is rather lightweight and toy-like in feel (definitely doesn't feel like it would survive an impact and the UL rating, in fact, is only for home/office use!). There are many other radios that have the look of being rugged only for reviewers on Amazon and elsewhere to complain about the tuner knobs breaking, buttons sticking and the charge ports falling into the interior of the radio. In short, a lot of these emergency use products are built to sub-standard quality standards when, if anything, they have to be built better than average to make the cut in a disaster. Is there no good choice on the market that hits all of the critical points? What am I missing here?

Take a look at the Eton Scorpion. Maybe that is i bit more rugged than most other emergency radios.

Some really good points you make. Some Emergency Radios offer “AA” or “AAA” battery backup. Most all KAITO radios do as well as the C.Crane. Both the Kaito KA-350, and C.Crane Emergency Radios are pretty durable, and should withstand a couple “ falls from tables”. My KA-350ylw , fell off a 5 foot tall shelf onto tile, and survived. Though I would not recommend making a habit of it. 📻🙂

No, they are all junk. I am hopeful that someone will make a real emergency radio. However today all we have available are junk and toy like radios. It is almost funny how these manufacturers stress the need for such a radio, and then offer you junk to ensure a high profit margin. The truth is there is not a single emergency radio on the market that would last more than a couple of months if the situation called for it.

I've been given several Eton radios. All have been too delicate to carry in a backpack. Also, Eton's rechargeable batteries seem to cease functioning soon after unboxing. Kaito , Running Snail and Midland seem to last longer. My old Grundig is over 20 years old and still works. I had to replace the rechargeable battery on it, also. I mostly run my Grundig on triple A batteries, so it's not a problem.

One observation: You include the top of Che line C.Crane radio, which is not really an emergency radio, though it does have weather /alert, and 2meter Ham Band, C.Crane does make an excellent and highly regarded Emergency Crank Radio. And is moderately priced, has weather , an nd about the BEST reception of all of these. Even the Sangean. 📻🙂

I have a Midland er210 because its crank is very ergonomic. I just have one of these to charge my phone with a crank or solar, though the solar is extremely inefficient. To be honest I don't want to go into caveman mode if anything goes wrong with society or the outside world.
