I think the last point can still be debated. I've tried strict diets in the past and failed every time (as have many of my family members), but last year I took the more gradual approach and now I've lost over fifty pounds and I have gained a healthy lifestyle... I know that's anecdotal, but I hope that people watching this remember that the best weightloss approach is always the one that suits you best *personally*. What works for the majority of people in a study, might not work for certain individuals and I wouldn't want people to get discouraged thinking that they shouldn't even bother if they can't handle a strict diet right away.

I agree. It's definitely debatable. Everyone is different and will react different. What works for one may not work with others.
@andreainzaghi7373

the last point is wrong. What are they talking about? if you are obese you can lose more than 2 pounds per week, if you are just overweight it is inevitable that if you lose more than that you are losing muscle and bones. Besides, you do not measure diet results after one year but after 2-3 years, and not only in terms of lose weight but also in terms of healthy liver, healthy kidneys. Of course you need an aggressive approach if you are just obese and you do not care about preserving your strength.

Having too big of a calorie deficit can damage your metabolism and also make it more likely you will lose muscle while you are losing fat. Something like a 20% calorie deficit should be ok though, just make sure to get plenty of protein while losing fat to maintain your muscle and lifting weights while you lose fat is very helpful for this also.
@ahobbit1273

Yeah, I find that the more “‘militant” the diet, the easier it is to fail/quit. With the “slow and steady” approach, it’s easier to make small changes over time, so it’s therefore easier to build habits and stick with them in the long run.

There's actually conflicting evidence on the "pros" of eating 6 meals a day. For instance, in this study they found that going from 3 meals a day to 6 meals a day actually increased hunger and cravings: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23404961 Meal frequency really comes down to what works best for you. I'm sure that schedules play just as much of a factor in personal diet success as genetics :P

@PictureFit

Reconsider what you're eating. You might have hit a plateau because your body demands have come in line with your energy consumption. It might be as easy as changing a few things on your plate to skipping a snack or two.

Or take a week off the diet to kinda trick your body. That has helped me and some other people i´ve talked too!^
@TheHealthNerdTV

I use a 4 step process to get clients over plateaus: #1. Check overall calorie intake. Diligent measuring and tracking for a week. #2. Try resistance training 3x a week (helps prevent the down-regulation of metabolism #3. If those two are in check, do a diet break. Meaning take 3 days off hard core dieting. #4. If all of that fails, it's time to check in with a doctor. Get blood work down and take a look under the hood.

These are the kinds of videos I love to see. Focusing on educating people on what works and what doesn't by appealing to their intelligence and making it easy to understand for those who aren't as educated. I've seen plenty of channels that only tell people to do certain things and to not do certain things with absolutely no explanation why other than it does(n't) work. Once your channel grows more, I hope we'll be able to see it evolve and delve a little deeper into the actual science. :)

For the exercise part, I want to add that while diet is wholly more important in *weight loss* than exercise, there have been studies which show dieting without exercise (specifically weight training) leads to greater muscle loss. So, while diet and exercise vs diet alone may show similar results, it is important to look at body composition as well.

Thank you for this great video. I know there are a lot of people who will debate about the last one. I think it come from the "change your lifestyle' talk... and I do believe that to not put weight back on you have to change your lifestyle, so the crazy diets mentioned are not good because those are not sustainable. However the only way I have ever lost weight was by being militant about caloric intake. As a wellness coach for 14 years, I can tell you when you see the weight loss happen it is so motivating! Losing fast is very important so people do not give up.

In the book "French Women Don't Get Fat", the author does recommend a gradual healthy life to ease into it so it's not a shock but she also includes a fantastic leek soup recipe to kick start your new lifestyle. You drink it for the first three days and because it is a mild diuretic, you drop weight very fast during that time while getting your greens in. It is meant to boost your confidence and encourage you to want to keep trying since you see the results so fast. I think militant diets do work (if done safely and in a short spurt of time) since it might give people the motivation they need but after that short time, you got to make changes to your lifestyle and diet that you can stick with.

I think the problem with an aggressive diet is the motivation and discipline behind it. It can be hard mentally to change suddenly to a strict diet, especially in the first week or two. And likely there will not be that significant of a change in that period of time. I still think easing into a new lifestyle that includes a better diet and exercise is better for the long term health and overall consistency of an individual.

Last year I lost 30 lbs quickly and hit a weight loss plateau, i stayed there for 6 months (despite constantly dieting and exercising) and finally gave up on losing weight. I then gained 50 pounds (+20 from starting weight), when I decided to try to lose weight again. This time I did it slowly, and again, at the 30lb mark I hit a plateau. So for me, it doesn't matter how fast or slow i go. Just that I take a diet break to break my plateau when I hit that mark. After I figured that out, I'm back on track to lose more weight.

It is important to distinguish between total weight loss and fat loss when thinking about diet vs diet and exercise. Often people reference the same studies that show just diet being as beneficial if not more so for weight loss than diet and exercise but if you look at the studies that compare not total weight loss but fat loss diet and exercise reign supreme by a considerable margin. if you are exercising and dieting you will lose less overall weight because you are either maintaining or possibly gaining muscle. a pure diet plan for weight loss will mean you lose weight from muscle as well which will lead to overall higher weight loss. summary: diet and exercise are far more beneficial even if you only concern is losing that extra flab be careful of people using studies to prove something because not all studies are made equal look at the research methods and criteria then results to determine if it is really answering what you want to know.

it is really encouraging that half of the rules floating around can be ignored (at least according to the most recent understanding of the matter). If I have a caloric deficit, I will lose weight. If I eat balanced meals, I will gain health. If I exercise, both weight loss and health gains go up a bit. Everything else that is recommended (cut carbs/fat/this/that, eat then/not then) is either controversial, unimportant or both. That's good. What I eat precisely is only relevant with respect to getting all nutrients and with respect to helping me achieve my caloric goals (i.e. satiety and stuff).

Thanks Health Nerd! I'd like to know why shedding the fat around my waste (which isn't that much anymore) goes so freakin' slow? I've been on a variety of diets now for about 3 years, gained some muscle (and some weight) but losing 2 pounds a week, that's a big no-no for me. Could you shed some light on this? I'm 42, active, lean in my arms, legs but not so much around my waste. I lift, sprint, 3-4 times a week and my workouts are usually around 45' long. I'm on Vince Gironda's "steak and eggs" diet most of the time with 1 carb refeed day a week. Love the good work! Ta!

I did a ketogenic-type diet for 18 weeks and lost 40 pounds. 2 months later I had to have my gallbladder removed. Now I'm struggling to adjust my diet to where I'm not physically uncomfortable, taking in a healthy amount of fat, and not gain weight but I haven't found the key in 3 months (unless it's a fully raw fat free diet). Any videos?
