@blkwht9898
5 жыл бұрын
Neither jogging nor static stretching before a workout is necessarily problematic; context is key. Yes, jogging is hard on the joints, it's not the most efficient way to burn calories in terms of cal/unit of time, and it can slow down muscle growth or bring about muscle atrophy. But high intensity workouts are difficult to sustain, can also be hard on the joints and can also bring about muscle atrophy. If building aerobic capacity is your goal, a moderate-intensity activity like jogging is indispensable. In fact, jogging constitutes something like 80% of all elite marathoners' workouts. Cf. Zinner, C. (2016). Training Aspects of Marathon Running. In *Marathon Running: Physiology, Psychology, Nutrition and Training Aspects* (pp. 153-171). Springer International Publishing. Yes, static stretching cold can cause injury and static stretching pre-weightlifting can decrease power output. But static stretching post-warmup and pre-workout is arguably preferable to no stretching. Static stretching pre-workout is also indispensable if tight muscles are impeding proper form (e.g. stretching the hip adductors or achilles pre-squat) or bringing about injury (e.g. stretching the quads before a jumping-intensive sport) and dynamic stretches don't get the job done.

@@joshuataylor3550 Not really, it very much depends on what you are trying to achieve. I am currently training for 10k races. My program consists of 3 easy days (zone 2 - 1 short followed by 80m sprints and 2 long easy runs 10+ kms), 1 medium day (z3 tempo usually 8km) and 1 hard (z3 to z4 intervals, hills). Most runners do a lot of Z2 training; in the running context it means I can chat with my running partner the whole way. What Jeff is saying isn't necessarily wrong either, it's more aimed at people who are 'jogging' only occasionally and poorly who would be better off just doing sprints.
@hannessteffenhagen61
2 жыл бұрын
@@joshuataylor3550 depends on what you're trying to achieve. Highest calorie burn per unit of time? Yes. Conditioning, total calorie burn? No. Reason mostly being, unless you're extremely fit already you simply can't keep up high intensity for very long, your body won't be able to keep up. Applying this to running, if you run at high intensity not only will your cardiovascular system struggle to keep up if you're not an experienced runner, you'll also do a number on your joints and you'll interfere with recovery from lifting. For most most people, regular low/moderate intensity cardio over longer periods of time is better if for no other reason than you'll actually be able to do it and keep doing it.
@hypothalapotamus5293
2 жыл бұрын
@@joshuataylor3550 No, it's not. If I look at most elite endurance athletes, they train mostly at low intensity with only a small fraction of their training volume at high intensity. High volume is the name of the game. This isn't even specific to runners, who tend to have a larger fraction of time devoted to high intensity than CC skiers and cyclists (this is due to running being higher impact, limiting maximum volume before injury. Past 40 miles a week, injury rates go up rapidly.). The pure HIIT camp hasn't won an Olympic 5K since the 1960s.

So either you already have decent jogging endurance or it's just not enough to get the results you're looking for. If you just want to stay in decent shape, then a long brisk jog will do for most. But you won't get shredded. Pro athletes train harder than juniors just like elite teams in armed forces train harder than GIs, etc. They have to do more because more is asked/expected of them.

He makes some valid points, but I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree to an extent. Most people aren't super athletes and have limited motivation. If they are still moving and exercising even in a non-ideal manner it is still beneficial. For example exercise bike and treadmill don't replicate the actual movements perfectly, but do them with good technique and you are still getting a workout. Likewise I don't think jogging is bad, plenty of studies have shown jogging to be good at improving both health outcomes and VO2 max. In fact I just finished reading a book on the merits of slow jogging. There is no real evidence that jogging is bad for joints (providing you run on natural surfaces). In fact if anything recent studies have shown it improves joint health. Similarly with Tabata, yes ideally people would follow the protocol exactly, but I will wager even skipping slowly for 30 secs followed by 10 secs rest will do a decent job at improving fitness for the average person as well as burning calories. I understand what he is saying, but what I'm saying is for the average person, provided they are sensible and use good technique many of those things aren't bad. I think the biggest danger is the number of people in the world leading a sedentary life style and not moving much at all, even low intensity non perfect exercise (provided it is done in a safe manner) is far far better than nothing. Setting the bar too high with respect to intensity is going to actually demotivate some people. If you are super fit and an athlete, then feel free to disregard what I just said. My comment is more aimed at people who are unfit or average fitness and are just happy to make moderate gains in cardiovascular and muscular fitness. But I encourage everyone not to believe what I or anyone says, and instead to read various studies for themselves.

Love Jeff's video, but I feel like I do have to take issue here. I love my elliptical, it's been been a great way to get great cardio consistently at all times of the year. More importantly it's been critical to the progress I've made from my starting weight in spite of ankle issues. He's 100% correct about lazy form but it seems to me like having the correct form is important with all forms of resistance training so why should this be different? I'd love to see Jeff specifically coach viewers on proper elliptical use. Regardless of your age or starting fitness level, you can get an intense workout in limited minutes with very, very little impact.

Yes, I agree. I love my Rogue Echo bike. I generally enjoy watching these videos, but the real object of this one seems to me to be provocative, to get people going as they say. The comment that "machine based cardio will never replicate what it actually feels like when your body is out in space doing these activities for itself" goes for absolutely everything that happens in a gym. I mean when you pick up something heavy in real life it's going to be a big awkward shape like a fridge or motorcycle or something . . . you're never going to come across something that looks like a barbell with weights attached. I might not be able to give you tips on working out, but I can help you with words. If you want to be rude about everyone making an effort to get fit at the gym, don't mess about with these far fetched examples. I'd just say what you want to say. It's still rude as heck, but a lot more efficient to say it this way. I'd applaud that.

the thing he misses more of the time in his videos and probably cuz they are for free(and you'll have to pay for a personal coaching and that is fair and correct) or just to make the videos not to long is CONTEXT...if you have injuries in the legs, a more comfortable way of doing it in a machine is way better than not doing anything at all...he can't just cover every situation i guess...

Another elliptical user here. I've got a bad hip and my doctor recommends the elliptical over jogging since it's less impact on the joints. However, some of the other commenters have made important points - we're probably not professional or even amateur athletes like the folks that particular comment is being aimed at. (I'm just another formerly obese person trying to get fit, myself.) For those who are actually training for sport performance, non-machine cardio probably is for the best. And my trainer has, in fact, forced me to do battle ropes instead of machine cardio for the last month. It's a lot harder than it looks...

Treadmills and Stairmasters can actually be a very good and effective cardio workout if you use them to it's full advantage. Using a treadmill on max incline is very convenient than trying to find a hill (which will always be limited by its peak). Plus the cardio machines force you to keep going and never stop. Also, they have timers on them which works really nicely if you try doing interval training. Running outside can actually be bad for your joints in the long run (no pun intended) if you're running on hard floor like sidewalks or concrete. If you ever plan on running outside, it's much better to run on a softer surface like dirt, grass, sand, or in the woods. It's not natural for humans to run on concrete. Back then, our ancestors ran wild through forests and what not. On top of that, they mostly ran barefooted, which is a more natural way to travel. The position of your feet is altered from it's natural state when you wear shoes compared to running barefooted.

I'm thinking, what's so great about your X-mile run when you could reduce the distance by 60%-70%, but increase your pace by 25-40% and sweat a lot harder? It's amazing how some people who swear by running are allergic to sprinting. I softened up my stance, though, because not everyone's life goal is to be an elite athlete, and that they just want to be healthier, and if jogging achieves this for them then who are we to tell them to knock it off. Plus, for some people, being outdoors and spending time in motion is the real gains. @flash92gaming
6 жыл бұрын
He was talking about people jogging while overweight, hence putting too much pressure on the joints. And yea the bad technique part is universal. Also, from what I've read (read up on bits of physiology from random books at uni lol), whether something is a natural mode of movement or not depends on the physiological need/purpose. Walking- covering a distance basically. Sprinting- running away from something or perhaps trying to catch something (e.g. hunting) or reach somewhere asap; if that is the case, the brain goes into its "fight or flight" mode as it is a matter of urgency. What is the purpose of jogging? Covering a distance?- if you have time you can relax and walk, if urgent you try and sprint there asap. In what situation do you actually "need" to jog at moderate pace? A sport is not a "need", it is voluntary participation. Jogging, if you breakdown the form, is literally power-walking with jumps at the end of every step. Sprinting on the other hand is completely different with the forward-leaning angle and more muscle involvements, which implies that this form of movement has a different purpose than walking as the body automatically shifts into a different form of movement. When we jog, we are forcing our bodies to mix up walking and jumping at the same time. No hate. Just saying that running at a moderate pace is only involved in sport and is not a natural "need" for our bodies (VO2 max can be improved with any form of cardio). May be I am taking a few books too seriously lol. I myself go for a 3-5km jog at least 2x a week in addition to other types of training and do believe in the benefits for improving your max capacity for cardio, but personally don't believe it is a natural mode of movement :)

Depends on your shoes. Thick soles promote heel striking, which is responsible for most foot issues in runners. And your weight. My gym trainer feels that you should first cut down before serious muscle work as there is much less load on your joints. Check your foot arch, flatter feet have serious issues in running and jumping. Besides, in exercise there is something called recovery, which is where the strengthening happens. Generally if you care about longevity and functional strength then it makes sense to focus more on slow twitch muscle and low impact exercise with a focus on your cardiovascular system. Focusing exclusively on high impact fast twitch training is an easy way to be using a walker by 75.

Cardiovascular fitness is important to overall health, even for weightlifters. There is a reason that Jake Gylenhaal did 4 hours of strength and functional training following an 8 mile every day to prepare for his role in Southpaw. The important thing with cardio is to push yourself as Jeff mentions. He recommends sprints but a 5k can be just as effective. You can do 5k Interval training, a 5k speed workout, a 5k Recovery workout, and then a normal 5k for pace setting trying to do negative splits. All of this is important for ramping up the metabolism and building cardio fitness which reduces risk of heart disease.

There are merits for jogging. Even relatively short jogs (e.g. 10 -14 km). Every marathon plan includes them next to the long run, the intervals, the high-intensity run. and the medium runs. There are different training goals for all of those.
@AnibalAlvarez

Jogging is the way of running. Sprinting is an anaerobic exercise which pontentiates lactate segregation just like any other resistance workouts. It provides almost no benefit for endurance but just for making sure that you'll not get hurt if you significantly increase the pace on last mile of your race. If you just sprint, then you're not doing cardio. In that case, even walking is better. And, among the three options, jogging is the unmatched king. You would be surprised about how many people go to the gym and focus on legs, abs and back just to improve their condition for running. Not precisely for aesthetics or increasing sizes but for strenghtening the muscles and joints. Lifting weights is also one of the quickest ways to increase mithocondrias which are key for increasing energy production, optimizing blood circulation, and therefore developing speed and improving endurance (not just for running, but also for any other endurance sport like cycling or swimming). Also, jogging (which is also running) on treadmills is a perfect way to bypass air resistance and height variations, to increase cushioning (specially during recovery sessions), and measuring variables in a controled environment.

But running below your top of "zone 2" is the best way to gain aerobic capacity. So if you want any real endurance you will be running waaay slower than a sprint.

i have never heard of the phrase 'TABADA' but i have done 20:10 sets on an exercise/watt bike, and i can tell you, if you are managing to reach peak watts for even 1 second in the 20, then after about 3 sets you are absolutely dead! and i am speaking as a track cyclist! you cant sustain 100% peak intensity for multiple sets over 20s, its physically impossible. the best athletes in the world will need to ramp up and wind down in those 20 seconds. that said, 8 sets of 20:10 is a bloody good work out even if you are only hitting 80% intensity. skipping is probably a bad example because it is too easy, but there are many exercises where 20:10 is really really good! the point here is, just going through the motions is going to be fairly ineffective for whatever cardio you are doing, but if you are properly burrying yourself, then any form of intervals is going to be doing world of good!

Eh, when I enlisted in 2014 I was in the best shape of my life. I ran 5.5 miles, 3 days a week at about an 8mph pace average. When it came to running the mile in prep for boot camp, my group started and several kids sprinted out and didn't know how to pace. By the end of the mile I had passed all but one, and he beat me by 0.5 seconds. I was 28 running against high school athletes. I also know the benefits of jogging and you're dead wrong on it, possibly the only thing you can't do which is why your view on it is so hard.

I don't get it, I used 3 different machines for 45 minutes every day for the last 4 months. So far I'm 16KG down. I was 116KG @ 6'0 so pretty big. I'm sitting at around 100-99 and I'm trying to get back between 85-90 KG as IMO that's when I looked my best. I'm not going to say using the machines was what caused the weight loss, it was obviously the caloric deficit I was creating everyday, but the machines helped me achieve that deficit, because, well - I hate starving myself of calories. I'd rather eat to a reasonable satisfaction and use machine cardio to achieve the deficit. HIIT or even running outside is not an option for me even now, it's just way too much impact. I couldn't even run for 1KM on a treadmill when I started. Now I can run for 5K at anytime I desire without nearly killing myself. It also improved my mood and general happiness.

@@bluespidrlily Yeah, but real life applications of that, like punches or climbing, mostly require explosive power with your bodyweight or slightly above it with high endurance, rather than the ability to lift 400 pounds with your chest. It´s mostly for the looks. I have no doubt that Jeff has done his homework and is very profficient in all these areas. However, most weight-lifters rarely train cardio, coordination and explosive power, not to mention techniques, so they are often just useless piles of muscle.

@ok-sj7bx

oh. I have heard today on my "health information" class in high school that 80% of cardio should be done slower pace than that, around 100-150 heart rate range. So I feel like that rule doesn't apply. I have actually heard it other way around, and by that I mean that you have to be able to speak when doing basic endurance. And they also said on my health information class, that even top runners/others similar people should apply this rule. The word in Finnish is "perus kestävyys", and in English I think it is basic endurance. Try to google about different types of endurance exercise and maybe you find the same chart that we used today.
@legend9018

I understand you’re point. You’re body will adapt to whatever stress you put it under and if you do not stress it adequately then you may not make the gains necessary to achieve your goal. Obviously some people have physical limitations on what they can do but you can still work around those limitations to achieve the necessary intensity or load. Like Jeff said in the video you should make each work out singularly focused on the type you select. Have a great day!
