Just want to add a quick note that I didn’t cover in the video and a few people mentioned…. If you shoot late at night, or in a part of town you don’t know well or even in an area where you might feel uneasy, please bring someone with you for safety. Personally I dont shoot at night nor do I venture into rougher parts of town, so this was not even a thought for me. Thank you to all the comments that have highlighted this, it is very important.

Because of social discord and uncontrolled narcotics use on the local streets presently, we always go in groups and are armed. Usually we are on the move using discretion and often move rather quickly. My usual route, for instance, had 4 separate shootings in 3 days this past weekend. Those security issues aside, I love shooting street alone.

The world has obviously changed, so sad... I used, and still use (less frequently), to wander around until late of course not shooting people's faces up close, but I kind had confidence walking around. And night shooting sometimes require even longer times to shoot, exposure, playing and experimenting around with the street lights or any LED lights... Nowadays need to watch out more and more.

I’m an introvert and a loner, it’s just me and my camera. I tried shooting with my boyfriend and he got in my way-physically, and would elbow me aside or get in my way to get ‘The Shot’ and I finally told him that it just wasn’t working for me and why, he wasn’t thrilled that I prefer to go out solo (and prefer he do it also or with others); but he understands. I enjoyed your video, thank you.

I understand and relate to this a lot, although I was the only one taking photos. I found myself seeing interesting compositions but missing shots because my significant other was walking too fast, uncomfortable because they didn't dress for being outside, or becoming frustrated with how often we were stopping and just didn't understand the workflow. Solo is the way to go unless you're both shooting and mindful of one another's process.

100% agree Roman I normally need to have my concentration solely on the act of taking pics both for its therapeutic effect and for photographic results. I meet up with a friend in York, have a coffee and we meet up again in 2 hours and so on, you work on your own but have the added bonus of a bit of a photography chat over Coffee and lunch. But is too easy to be distracted when walking around with someone and you end up missing the shots. What would be good fun is to get 20 to 30 people to flashmob a building, all spaced out (not on drugs) taking shots, and watching the security guys go into meltdown.

Photography is a quite solitary activity. It is very intense dance involving looking, seeing, previsualising the final image. Manipulating equipment into a state that makes the image possible. Revisualising the image and evolving it according to the camera and it’s output. Seeing new possibilities. Juggling settings. Getting involved with the unfolding possibilities. All of these mental gymnastics just capturing the image require real imagination and being engaged and in the moment. Two people with cameras dancing around each other on the spot as photographers will square their own circle independently. There won’t be much or, any conversation. They will be quite separated and very much in their heads. The best shots need a singular set of emotions and attachment to the outcome. Taking someone with me tends to lead to smaller slices of inspiration. It can work if the other person is not upset by my concentration and is not trying to make conversation about what I am doing and why I am doing it. I understand what you’re saying. Maybe the challenge is to develop the ability to come away with worthwhile images despite…

Great video! I definitely love shooting on my own. And listening to music can be super fun. I will say though, sometimes having music or a book going can make you miss whats happening around you. I was shooting yesterday in downtown Toronto and was at a crosswalk hanging out because the light was awesome. got a few shots I liked but nothing I loved, and decided to start walking away. Then, I heard a skateboard and quickly whipped around and nabbed the shot. It was my favourite shot of the entire day and if I had my headphones on I wouldn't have gotten it!

Fully agree! For years the majority of my photography occurred on 10 days trips dedicated to the purpose. The most successful were those where I went alone. The next most productive were trips where I took another photographer, who for the most part was either doing his own thing, and trailing me and shooting variations of my ideas. For many years, I was clear that I would take no non-photographer on these trips. One time I broke the rule as a favor to a friend/father to take his teen-aged sons along. They were perfectly behaved and put up with my activities without complaint. I got some good shots, but my attention was split as the supervising adult in the group. For me, it was not a very happy trip.

Excellent thought processes Roman. I think in exactly the same way as you. Have actually never done anything but solo outings for all the reasons you mentioned. I also only listen to music on the tube. But when walking, I find it distracting when looking for compositions. Or I might miss an important sound cue somewhere around me at any given moment which might mean quickly turning my head for an interesting grab shot. You're right about bored security. I walked up to the top of the yellow stairs at Southbank yesterday and was told I'm not allowed to take photos because it's private property. Didn't matter, I already got my shots in. :D

Your remarks are on point. I surely enjoy from time to time exchanging views and information with others, but when doing photography it happens over and over again I have to explain people or friends I'd rather go on my photo-trip...alone.😇 Of course I need to use diplomatic language in order to not offend or disappoint, but the main reasons why I prefer to shoot on my own (especially on holiday trips) you just basically mentionned all of them. Overall, I don't want to take other people's time while taking a pic,and vice versa I don't like feeling pressured (and I have experienced it, so uncomfortable) when on a beautiful and expensive trip I had been looking forward too... It sounds very egoistic, but I believe taking pictures is a very personal experience, you may share your experiences and pics afterwards, but not while shooting them, at least that's my opinion. Cheers!!😎👍

I enjoy shooting alone, but also with close friends. Sadly my camera bestie is in another country and we can't do photowalks :/ I think it is very true that you need to be alone to be focused and in the zone to train a good eye. Though I would say the best reason to shoot with friends is to get shots of yourself. Honestly nothing is more depressing than looking back a year or two later and not a single photo of myself was captured.
