I photograph because I like walking around. It adds an extra layer of enjoyment and purpose to my alone time. That's why I follow people like you and Gareth Danks... there's no fluff, just practical advice about taking better photos (especially street). You sell the photo-taking process as enjoyable, rather than a cumbersome all-consuming thing.

But after this video, I ealized that there's another reason for that. As am a person who feels at her happiest while taking photos, and so despite many differences, we belong to the same "tribe." Your comment about doing what makes you happy is the key. I am not a professional, just an enthusiast. So for me, I would rather have a photo with some grain (noise), then no photo at all. I have no one to please but myself. I find my favorites, have them printed and either hang them on a wall at home or put them in an album so I can admire my own work. No one else’s opinion matters.

You nailed it with this video. I find it especially important to not be too concerned about the „tech guy“ who tells you that your equipment is not capable enough. On the other hand, listening to the „creative“ and the „experience-oriented“ never hurts, in my honest opinion. They don’t make you feel „not good enough“. Same goes for you btw, one of the reasons your channels is one of my favorites!

You make a really valid point here. I've been pretty much binge watching all kinds of videos & interviews featuring many well known street photographers as my interest in the subject has grown. I've heard quite a bit of conflicting advice in terms of the equipment you need, like I have to have a 35 or a 50 prime, kit lenses aren't up to street photography, you shouldn't use zooms, you should only shoot manual, Ap priority, Shut priority etc etc. On the other hand, I've seen some whose work I really admire say the opposite, like they use a kit 18-55 lens on AP mode or use zooms. It has at times left me doubting whether I could give street photography a serious go because I was left not knowing which way to go. What I can say I've learned from it all is that it's the shot that counts; the settings or equipment used are secondary. There are many whose work I really enjoy, including yours yet everyone appears to have their own way of doing things. In my opinion, enjoyment is the biggest factor. I love disappearing off for hours on my own with my camera, it's the only thing that lets me shut everything else out.
@snapsbyfox

100% agree….. you can have a street photo snob with a 10k 35mm Leica who is angry and frustrated because he hasn’t got his masterpiece of the day…. enjoyment is key. As for conflicting information i feel i have to make it my mission to clear things up here haha

@@snapsbyfox You're succeeding in your mission, Roman! I find your advice the most down to earth. When I see someone like yourself who produces top quality work saying it's ok to use a zoom, it makes me feel like street photography is more accessible. I was a full time professional for over 45 years, and now I'm 'officially retired', I'm able to subscribe to your 'photographic philosophy', and produce images that I have fun taking. I'm delighted that gearcentric photographers who always must have the latest 'flavour of the month' kit are around, because they support/enable a very buoyant second hand market for the rest of us to be able to purchase more than adequate equipment without breaking the bank!

Ah, the dangers of pigeonholing ...... I happen to be a blend of all three types of photographer. Mind you, being a photographer is my life’s work, and I think it is pointless to make glib value judgements as to what actually constitutes a novice photographer. For what it’s worth, I started off as an amateur, then became a working professional, and now I am merely an artist in my own right. This is an unfinished journey that has so far taken 55 years of practice. My only advice to a novice is to photograph what fascinates you, and to read the free manual - that’s it. Take it as read from a complete nobody who has done absolutely everything yet hungers for more - I really don’t think you would like me.

I am a bit of a careless youtube browser and I don't avidly follow many people but the common factor tends to be something about the person themselves, so that comment about not being able to separate the person from the art really resonated with me. I follow you and Thomas Heaton, and although you're very different photographers I do get the feeling that if I bumped into you in the real world, you'd be just as genuine and enthusiastic as you are in your videos. So I haven't watched every single one of your videos, but I do remember every single one I've watched, and I do remember what I learnt you, whether it's the best settings for an X-T4, how to photograph people without drawing attention to yourself, or this. Quite a lot of what I learnt from you really sticks, and helped me to push my own boundaries. You come across as having a great deal of personal integrity and that thing of following your own star makes your videos pretty unique. You've always got something interesting to say, and usually, nobody else is saying it. Thanks for that!

Thanks for making this. I really do think that there should be more attention on which type (or mainly which type as most people are some degree of all of them) of photographer someone is from the three. I know SOOO many who are technical/gear photographers who THINK they're creative types. I look at their very clean, sharp and compositionally perfect images and think "I don't really feel anything from it". But then I look at work that's off kilter. Something like Daido Moriyama. It's semi-blurry, tilted, clipped (highlights and shadows) but some how am blown away by what it is overall as an image. So, to me, it's a bit sad that technical/gear videos are what get the most views here on KZitem but it's nice and refreshing when I see videos like this. Thanks.

What I love in my photography is the fun of going to places and doing street stuff, travelling, having fun with people etc. I Also get excited of the creating process. Sometimes the gear nerd in me wants to go out and get the latest and greatest. I bought an used Fuji x-t4 early this year as I wanted the best and thought it made me better. I got myself used X-E2 and X-Pro1 and have so much more fun with those cameras as I mostly do art for myself. They are simple and fun cameras to use just for taking pics. I don’t really mind doing all that Lightroom/C1 at the moment so I like to have good jpeg mostly done in camera.

Bang on again Roman. I have got very good at counting down from 5 to skip adds which is far more interesting than some vlogs by numerous people on youtube. Worse still many are pointless to the extreme. There are a couple from the states, their work is below par yet they have many followers but then so did Hitler. On the other side of the coin there is a guy from the North West of England, does landscape work, takes good shots, but most of all he is so enthusiastic and a nice guy. Then in between, you have the mediocre, with Landscapes that means you can only take photographs an hour before or after sunrise/sunset, use a wide-angle lens where the subject looks so far away you have to place a big rock in the foreground, always go to over photographed honey spots, use a tripod, the rule of thirds and overpriced plastic filters. I assume between those magic times they talk about pixels and which plasters to buy in case you cut yourself on super-sharp lenses.

Just found your channel and I have to say i'm enjoying watching a video a day (my way of moderating info at a reasonable pace). The comments that you make about spending time fundamentally with people you like is great advice. Nothing is worse for a beginning photographer to listen to many of the self absorbed pompous jerks that populate KZitem. Humanity trumps self praise every time. Figuring out who to listen to and not to when you are new is the hard part. Its nauseating to me when i hear the ad from one photographer who says "i broke the code to lighting" to promote his video series. Go watch a Joe McNally video and he will show you how to do everything you thought you knew and more as he is probably the best in the world at lighting in addition to being a good person. As soon as a photographer starts flashing all of his past clients in front of me i instantly become suspicious of their insecurity and in turn their value to me. Do I want to invest time with a me me me guy? Seek a teacher that isn't threatened by their students success and truly loves the craft. These are the folks you want to learn from whether you are into technical, emotional or experiences. I've personally found the best individuals to get advice from are photo editors. They work detected from their own work and offer the best constructive criticism as long as you have the personality to listen. Egos are tough to penetrate for some people. Some of the photographers in a photo club I belong to resist advice/criticism so I see this on a regular basis. Having an open mind will take you a long way in your development and get you to a place where you can then begin to distinguish good advice from mediocre. We all never stop learning so its key to find a solid way to do that or you will burn out or worse yet not grow.

Great video Roman. I seem to be a combination of mostly the 3rd type with a bit of the 2nd thrown in. I absolutely love going out on a day/night trip with no idea which direction I'm headed or what I might see. Country or city doesn't matter. I never plan anything or have any expectations, I just love the feeling of being out there. Once I'm making images though I tend to stray towards images that invoke or portray a mood. I also tend to take more simple, minimal images which I think comes from me following a Buddhist path in the rest of my life. I don't feel attracted to the technical side at all. Once I was clear with how everything worked in my particular brand of camera and had learned all the basic photographic techniques, that was it for tech stuff for me. At the risk of causing controversy here, I have found over the years that most tech oriented photographers tend to be male. I'm a member of a women's photography group online and the number one topic that comes up over and over again when new members join, is how hard it was for these women to be part of a mixed photographic group. Especially if the group had a lot of the 1st type of photographer in them. It left no room for conversations about photography for the 2nd group. There are a lot of women photographers out there, more than most people realize. (There's nearly 10k in the group I hang out in.) They just don't hang out in the same forums/groups that a lot of the other photographers hang out in. It's a shame because we all bring something interesting to the table.

this was so interesting to read. To be honest, i think the average male ego (especially a KZitem inflated one) will hover towards gear as there is something to compare and something to deem as better / worse. Same as cars… loads of girls love fast cars…. they just dont shout about to to everyone lol
@CarolyneMacMillan

@@snapsbyfox I can bet that a lot of those girls that like fast cars like them for the color, shapely curves, the sound they make and the exhilarating feeling of speed and not what's under the bonnet, the fuel economy or what sort of mags it has lol. It's just a totally different way of viewing the world and even though the bulk of the population seems to lean more to one way or the other according to their gender, there are enough with a mixture of both to bring both side together if a photography group has enough of a mix and wants to explore all aspects of photography. I guess it just depends on which way the first few people leaned when they started their group. If they were more technically minded they would attract more of the same.

Good topic since there are so many videos out there made by all three of the categories you discuss on here. I fall into the 2nd group but have attributes to the other two; since I teach photography in high school I have to know a little of group 1 and personally I love just going out and wandering areas and exploring with my camera. I always ask my students to study all until they find the path they want to follow. Very good video, will show my students next class...

Quality video and advice, it is overwhelming when you start, specially with all the people and channels on KZitem.. I watched so many early on from so many people. But yours has always stuck with me as it’s honest and I’m also thick as fuck and just love picking camera up and taking pictures

Nice take on this topic, Roman. I myself do love a few gear or tech reviews but I'm more on the art and experience of taking photos. I also completely agree on not separating the art from the artist. A great artist but a crap person is corrupted in my view.

Thanks Roman for the video! I totally agree with you when you say that if you don’t like a person, you don’t want to follow his art: I do the same! But regarding the three categories you refer to, I believe the last two ones, the “artistic/philosohpical” and the “experience” one could be quite interrelated in reality... anyway, keep going like this, and thanks again!

I agree on most. I think one's would better watch both the technical and the other types, like user experience driven ones and photography theorists, because in the end what is a camera? A technical device that is taking pictures, so you need to know about the technique and then you might or might not take photos "with a soul". I used the quotes for the following reason : I'd rather listen to 100 guys who know everything about a camera and brick walls (because it's a concrete thing, the technique, not the walls) then listening to one guy who gives advices about the metaphysical photography b.s while having only rubbish photos. And there are a lot, a lot, a lot of big KZitemrs who think their work is exemplary when in reality it's just BS. I just want to tell them "Man, you talk about the masters and the history of photography and then you show me this photo of yours that a 4 years old could take? Do you know what is self criticism?" And among those channels there are the ones like yours that I really appreciate. What I appreciate about your channel and alike is : you talk about the user experience, you make very good photos, good ones, mah ones and sometimes bad ones, but you're not afraid to be honest and you criticize your work and show it to us. And that's the most important thing compared to the other ones who think that every shutter click they make is a masterpiece. So my advice is, look for those who are going to teach you the technical side, those who are going to teach you how to train your vision (eye and mind) and if one of them is showing you his work, analyze it, compare it to the masters and then judge if it's worth it or not. Oh and self critique. Most important thing.

@@snapsbyfox No, thank you for making this channel, oh and by the way, your narration is really good, everytime I watch a video of yours I know I'm just gonna enjoy the "story". There's just one thing that Eren beats you to, he juggles a lot with lenses and that adds a lot of tension and suspense to his videos because we never know how it's gonna end for the poor lens 😂

I just picked up an X-T4, my very 1st big boy camera and I was just curious which SD card you went with/which goes best with the camera. I've done some research and been getting some conflicting reports, figured you might have some insight on this one. Appreciate any and all help.

@@snapsbyfox I think you manage to project your proper thoughts in your videos and not just trying to fit to a format that works well on youtube, hence your videos come over more authentic to me (the use of language helps of course to underline this perception, all the youtubers that beep out half of their videos are a pain, but I get why they do it too, it is rather a youtube policy issue) Looking forward to your future videos and projects, your honest opinion about Fujifilm was partly one of the reasons I opted in and started to enjoy taking pictures again after a long period of just carrying a camera around. So thank you a lot for that !

Other than hoping to meet the Oracle to give us easy to follow steps to reach the top, we need to use our our intelligence to gather DATA from various sources and turn them into useful INFORMATION. No surprise there, since it is the same with everything else in life. But still, there are people easily getting SCAMMED with those quick to get rich schemes or use ROT to reach the next level of photography advice. 🙂

A thought provoking video, many thanks... But so much to unpack here. I totally get you about the artist being linked to the art. Thankfully I have only ever encountered one tog who I choose to avoid. But what about dead artists or ones you have never met. If a dead artist was a D! £k in life would their work be diminished. It could be their unlikeable quirks made them the great artist.

I guess I'm more of the philosophical type, but I can do the other types too. I sometimes watch techie reviews but mostly get bored half way through and stop watching if it gets too number specific. I'm not really a people person, which often surprises people when I say that, so going out and meeting people, and travelling doesn't really do it for me in photography. Having said all that, I do go out and shoot with a group of friends from time to time, and that is fun. I always watch your videos all the way through, so I that must count for something… 😇
