I know it's not great for chain retention or gear range but you can get away with a LOT less maintenance on 8/9speed derailleurs. I've seen peoples run the stock XT 8 speed derailleurs that came on their bikes for more than 15 years. Because of the larger distance between gears on the cassette, you have that much room for error/misalignment before it starts to negatively effect shifting.

How to solve shifting problems in 3 easy steps: 1. remove shitty index shifters & throw them away, (or sell them to suckers on ebay) 2. install good friction shifters, the "ratchet" kind that go click click click when you turn the lever, this "micro-indexing" is all the indexing you'll need. Get vintage Shimano if you can, if not, SunRace makes some decent knockoffs of the old Shimano design. 3. adjust the derailleur travel. 4. (bonus step) enjoy how your derailleur keeps working without needing to be readjusted every 2 miles! Seriously I changed my rear derailluer about 6 yrs ago, (dumped the front derailleur entirely) I went from SRAM to Shimano & I hated the SRAM grip shifters, but new Shimano shifters were too expensive, so I put on an old Shimano thumby I had found to save money. I adjusted the derailleur once and have not touched it since, except to take up slack from cable stretch, it still shifts perfectly 6 yrs later!

Can I use a 10 speed sram shifter with a 8 speed X7 SRAM chain set? The X7 shifters is 9/10 and I'd rather a X7 over a X5 I upgraded my SRAM from crappy shimano (I hate shinano Loooove SRAM) but still have the old shimano shifter so can't shift properly. I went for 8 speed purely cos it was the lightest and I simply think any more the 8 is pointless. Im a power rider and can climb steep hills I'm 5/6 gear and on my 44t chain ring and No I never change my front gear and took of the small ring to save weight

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzitem.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

Can any bad alignments from the screws cause problems in the middle of the cassette? I heard that a 12speed can be a Diva...but I cannot wrap my head around, why my bike perfectly shifts in upper and lower gears, but not in the middle (specifically 1 gearbeitet and mostly in downshifting). For me there is only 1 conclusion...either the chain isnt well or even more so the cassette isnt really that well. I have this since I bought it. Sometimes only slight mishabs, but it gets nasty on an ebike, when you apply that torque and it happens. My local bikeshop now did it twice...always reminded me on a dry chain...which usually isnt the case as I use it after every tour. And as they say that its fixed, I only drive 1mile and can immediatly feel, that especially downshifting in the 4th lowest gearbeitet isnt feeling fast and crisp enough. I guess I will try myself and after that need a proper testen of my cassette.

A sixth shifting problem into the third and largest gear at the crankshaft: a front derailer problem. (Excusez que j'ecrivais l'anglais pour "derailleur", mais je n'aime pas emprunter les mots d'autre langues et en melanger parmi mon anglais.) The cable pulling down on my front derailer pulled it directly downward when on gear two, the middle gear of the set. In order for the cage to move away from the frame, the cable had to pull outward as well as downward. When I received the Decathlon-made bike from Walmart, the cable routing did not do that. It pulled the cable straight down in second gear and could not rotate the parallelogram linkage to move the cage outward. I was able to remove the cable from the plastic guide beneath the bottom bracket and reroute it around the outer projection of the bracket so that its tension now has an outward component. Now, it shifts into third gear.
