If it wasn't for this guy, my bettas would still be in a unheated, unplanted tank with rainbow gravel. Things are so much better for them now and they are thriving.

Gonna gradually clean & make changes so we don't stress him out too much since we just moved him & his tank into our house. He's in a 10 gallon, but it's pretty dirty right now. Might upgrade him to a 20 gallon once I get the hang of things. Wish me luck!!

Two are for terrestrial garden snails one for my sister's grass frog and one semi-aquatic set up for 3 cute little tadpoles, and don't get me started on the several different jars with tiny freshwater snails and duckweed I have. All tanks and jars I received as freebies and I still have no idea how how many gallons they can hold. My sister's grass frog enclosure being my best one yet! What I also think which helps with budgeting: consider what you want and what you need for that. Compare products and, if you find them, reviews online. Compare vendors and their prices for these products and make decisions where to buy said products. In The Netherlands, we have a lot of good pet shops specialised in aquarium keeping and some garden- and hardware/DIY stores sell aquarium products. So when I went to buy the items I needed, I made a list with the price of each product and where to procure them. In one afternoon I went to Ikea first, since I needed storage bags because of the flat being renovated, then to Hornbach (gardencentre/DIY/hardware store) for aquasoil, sand substrate and a piece of mangrove drift wood and then to a great independent pet store for the tank, some tools and a basic water test kit. I ended up ordering the test kit because the pet store didn't have it at the time. The tank came with a net, filter, heater, thermometer, liquid bacteria, water conditioner (which you usually won't need in NL because of our tap water being the best and cleanest in the world) and even a packet of quality fish food. I did replace the active carbon medium in the filter with some proper stuff bacteria like to make their home. The plants and rocks were ordered online. The Dutch like to look for the cheapest option. Some products are sold at a lot of pet stores so compare prices and shipping costs because this hobby costs a fair amount of money anyway. Try to spend it efficiently. And basic tanks can be tweaked to your liking.

Over budgeting is something I wish I knew 8 months ago when I jumped in with my first real tank, and I had even been pricing and planning for some 4 months before what I needed to get. I really wish more fish keeping videos for beginners actually stated average prices to start new. The second thing I really wish was drilled into my head was "get a test kit and test your water BEFORE you even start thinking about what fish you want. I thought I was set when I had put aside a "generous" $200, I already had some of the stuff, such as the stand and river gravel/stones to use for hardscape, caught the $1/gallon sale for my 10g, caught an Aquarium Co-op sale for plants and basics, I thought I was set with my biggest purchases being my mid-priced light, master test kit and the fish. And every week it seemed there was some small extra I needed to get, but they were cheap, it was okay... One day I checked my checking and went "whoh... why is it so low??" then I was messing with the excel sheet I made to keep track of all my aquarium stuff (highly recommended to do, and depressing,) Came to find 3 months in I had dumped $400+ into my little slice of nature, and at that point I knew I wasn't even done cause I had to get different food and fertz cause my plants were not doing well nor my fish, and just anything else that could go wrong was. The second thing I learned the hard way was just my tapwater. All the fish I wanted and got liked low PH. I got them, then my test kit finally came in, and I found out that my tap was a PH of 8.2. Perfect for saltwater, or ciclids, and even most livebearers. Not bettas, Tetras and rasboras. They are doing okay, but I can't stress enough how much stress I've been in trying to combat this problem from early on, as I was sure it was one of the reasons why my fish were stressed, and same for plants. TL-DR: Overbudget if you care about fish lives, not all fish will do well in your water, same for plants, and not all foods are equal or universal.

I started a fish tank before finding you; as my first tank I did a lot of things right by mere luck. My heater is by my filter which is what your supposed to do but I had it there because it's where my cords could fit. I have 4 inches of substrate by basically adding 3 kinds of substrate in layers. Rocks at the bottom, nutrient rich clay gravel and sand after i added kuhli loach's. I didnt just leave it for a month when I "cycled it" I waited for the nitrates and nitrites to be completely gone. Its a planted tank with moneywort and java fern; not a lot to buy at petsmart which is the only petstore around me. Some of my plants did die at the start but the ones that lived grew so much I could replace the dead ones from the start with clippings. I made a mistake when i added my first fish, platys; I had an HOB filter that sucked them up and I lost 1 fish from it and two were injured but made it. After I lost the first fish I added cheese cloth to the filter but it stopped the flow frequently and somehow the 2 fish after the first fish got through so I did some more research and got a prefilter. Got 1 kuhli loach; I should have got more but then I was worried my substrate was too hard, but it's soft enough after some research. I got guppies and the petsmart fish sucked so I had to get another guppie to replace the dead one because it came with finrot and ick and died in 8 hours. I got two more loach's and got an airstone and airpump. The kuhli loaches are never shy and they do have hiding places but they will come out in day to eat and do their things. I got 9 platies from my friends mom. Now I have a lovely tank that's completely stable at 7.3ph. 120kh, no ammonia spikes, 180gh, and always 30pmm nitrates; which makes the plants grow quite well.

Just a friendly gardener comment; Prob don't save that bag of organic potting soil. If potting soil gets too dry it will actually become hydrophobic and you'll run into many issues. So just get some pots and plant things. Or give it away if you'll not use it in a timely manner, if it'll sit in your garage for a year or more.

The budgeting part is probably the most important thing you covered. I've only been aquascaping for about a year and it's become really obvious to me that if I had a much lower budget my tanks would look a lot worse. Budgeting for CO2 makes a night/day difference in your growth. Stocking the plants heavily from the beginning makes a huge difference. Having a nice light with a built in timer/app makes things way easier. All of those things cost more money. I would rather wait an extra few months to save up the money to do it right instead of starting earlier and having rough results and having to spend the money on plants/substrate all over again.

2$ tank challenge: does one have to buy the tank within that budget? lol Otherwise I can think of many ways to fill it up! Buy some aquatic plant on sale, preferably one that does not need subsrate to grow, and for hardscape, go to a nearby forest, bog, river, beach, and pick up the stones and the wood you like. Get yourself some pebbles from the riverbed. If you find a lot of aquatic plants, why not pick a small one to grow in your tank? For substrate, I guess the method you proposed can work well. Or maybe finding some in a river, a pond, or in your garden, if the earth is good where you live. And there you have it. Maybe not 2 dollars, but a super cheap way to make a fish tank.

Geez, Chris... thanks to FFT I got a 34 gallon tank Any simple stocking idea? I'm not planning on doing an aquascape since I already have 3 tanks with it so I might go bare bottom for this tank

oh man there's too many options for 34 gallon!!! I suggest searching stocking list for 33 gallon (more common tank size) on google, you'll get a lot of interesting lists!

If you're doing a planted tank I cannot stress enough how important quarantining non-tissue culture plants is. Tissue culture plants are grown in a sterile environment, but those clippings from the fish store, eBay, from a local hobbyist's tank could have snails (I like these) or scuds (I HATE these!) Girl Talks Fish has a video on how to sterilize new plants, and I wish I watched that before putting a scud colony into my heavily planted 5 gal

I wanted to ask you, have you ever had a problem with mosquito larvae? Mostly in the tanks without a lid and without a filter to keep the water moving.

Huh. Over-budgeting is a concept I've never realized until I watched this video LOL. Throughout the years I would not be happy with new tank setups, at least not for long. Only thing is that I've never exceeded 5 tanks, so I would change the scape and add new equipment over time. If I had the space to have more than 5 tanks though I'm sure things would be different lol.

I have 8 fish tanks. started off with blue, red and white pebble substrate (2 goldfish inside it and it was like 30 litres D: 2nd one was an 18 litre fish tank with blue gravel and a betta fish D: 3rd was blue gravel, a seal artificial decor D:, 4th was a 60 litre fish tank (idek how I was still into fish keeping) which I kept the same substrate (it was second hand) which was disgusting enough and then only artificial decor D: then I had a 30 litre tank which was just fake plants and building statues D: then I found Chris' channel. changed every one of the fish tanks into fertilised substrate, gave my goldfish to a shop which had ponds for them, the betta had died sadly and all of the other fish were ok to stay in the tanks. replaced the artificial decor with bogwood and plants and made 3 more planted tanks. got rid of the 18 litre tank

Can we get some tips to deal with/prevent algae? I'm having a lot of trouble with that. :)

I've never had prob of algae, because I have algae eaters :) Even if your tank isn't the most biggest (maybe), you can still get snails etc. I have bristlenose plecos, but they aren't the fish for tiny tanks. Hope, that you're doing your weekly water changes too :) I found a list, where were some algae eaters: homegearx.com/best-algae-eaters/

I'm so happy of my remastered 30gallon fish tank. I finally when with fluval stratum and live plants. It's still a work in progress and can't wait to show it off in a few months when the plants have filled out. I'm still undecided of the fish to put in it... but might just give my angelfish an upgrade and switch him tanks... anyone have suggestions, I would love to have them
