We made a choice when raising our two daughters to stick with entertainment that didn’t involve television babysitting, among many other lifestyle choices. They learned to be creative, use their imagination and not need constant external stimulus like so many of their friends. Fast forward 29 years and our eldest is living in Costa Rica with her husband a very minimalist lifestyle as they can travel out of a few backpacks. Our youngest is, essentially, back country living and building a 25’ x 25’ geodesic dome to live in, wood heating and also very minimalistic. On the flip side we recently sold everything that wouldn’t fit in four large suitcases and moved to Mexico. That was 32 years of accumulation and home, cars etc. We have embraced this living style and new country but we have a long way to go beyond the physicality of the changes. Our eldest, just today, thanked us for raising them the way we did as it opened up so many possibilities beyond the social expectations of friends and family as her and her sister are able to employ critical thinking skills without the trappings of those expectations that are the result of various external pressures. Basically, we are the black sheep and we love our life with less, living slower and appreciating what we need vs what we want as we realize the want is often a result of being marketed to and bowing to those social pressures of accumulating stuff.

Only just discovered your channel and really enjoying your videos. I can relate to them more than the ones living in a cottage or wooden hut in the middle of nowhere. It's a more realistic existence. Even if we live in an urban area, it can still be slow, peaceful, simple living. It's what we make of it that matters. We can always escape to the countryside to enjoy all it has to offer. I think you have a very balanced view of slow living. I'm 63 and have always lived a slow life. It was more hectic when the kids were home, but the last 20 years or so have been so peaceful. I just enjoy living in the moment, taking joy from the simple things in life, and doing as I please... and not what others think I should be doing.

The phone sound is really good. 😀 I am in no way a minimalist, but I buy very few new things these days, especially technology wise, because I think a lot of things don't evolve anymore, it's just the producers making new models out of greed, not because they've come up with something new. And in a way it makes me sad that I've already experienced peak mobile phone, peak car, peak houses and it just seems to be going ever increasingly fast downhill.

7:30 _"You can be a minimalist and still be an a$$hole."_ This is true. In fact, we could replace "minimalist" with probably any other group or process identifier -- rich person, poor person, spiritual person, materialist person, etc. -- and it would still be a true statement. Our practices are *how* we choose to live, but our *selves* are who -- *who* -- we are _regardless the group or process that we identify as/with._

Being a spiritual person has nothing to do with other people. Being nice, helpful, caring etc,all involves self importance, we hate to hear this because it uncovers an uncomfortable truth and makes us question our motives for everything. But look at any large growth period in your life and understand that it took an immense personal effort to overcome. The fact that this guy did this change and stuck to it is giving him personal power, he created the thought form, then fed it, and in return it feeds him, regardless of the end goal. We are obsessed with 'gain', which makes us addicted to 'end results', meaning we pay less attention along the journey, as long as the destination is reached. A clue to this is the fact that millions of organisms are born every day, and none of them will avoid the 'end result' of life.... does it stop them trying to survive? All paths lead nowhere, but a path with heart is worth taking....

Moving far from a 250k city to a 1k village is, 3 years in, an interesting experience. Gone are trophy hierarchies. The solitude forces, and helps, you to enjoy time alone. Nature is always here to cheer you up or vice versa. I felt it was harder to be alone in the city. You felt extra isolated seing all people, you had no relation to, all the time. It has a bunch of downsides but mostly practical ones. A bit surprisingly good sides dominates this far.

I really resonate with a lot of what you are saying and live a simple life myself. I have noticed that I have a slightly different take on the "quality vs quantity" aspect of friendships. I have worked in service and bars for many years and I have really learned to love a casual friendship. I am a bartender twice a week (currently my only gig - thank god for low rent) and love seeing all the local regulars. I do not really hangout with these people when not at work but I love getting to see everybody and chat for a little while here and there and running into them in the streets. I do have a few close friends, but also really appreciate having so many "more subtle" connections with people. The more love you give, the more love you get, the more love you give. Great content my man. subscribed

I'm 62 now. I knew I wasn't interested in all the normal "signs of success" way back, when I was a kid. But I didn't have any words for it. Sure, there were always things I wanted... But they were things that would allow me to do stuff. Things like a microscope or a bicycle. As I got older, I just kinda followed the path that was laid out by society. But it never fit. And I kept desperately trying to figure out how other people fit in. How other guys found a good wife, and settled into a normal life. Ultimately, rather than "choosing minimalism" (because it still didn't have much of a name), I just kinda sorta needed less stuff... less success. So, I pared down... just because it was easier. Less stuff to move. Able to fit in a cheaper apartment. It doesn't hurt that I know how to make, modify, or fix all kinds of stuff. By the time the "minimalist movement" came along, it just seemed weird that so many people were working so hard to do it in just the perfect, most trend-worthy way. Books to read and steps to follow and exercises to work through. (Things like experimenting with packing away half your clothes for a set time.) There is truly only one thing you need to do to be a minimalist. The only thing that ever really works: Want stuff less. Notice: I did not say to "want less stuff." That sets a target that you have to succeed at hitting. You can still keep ALL the stuff you currently have. Intentionally getting rid of stuff just creates MORE empty space for you to show off. Just "want" it less. Later, when it becomes more convenient to get rid of it than to move it.... THEN you can get rid of it. Or, if you just decide to start parking the car in the garage... THEN you can clear out said garage. It's easy then, because you don't care about that stuff anyway. You will know what you still actually need to keep, such as the tools to fix said car. You don't have to agonize over what to get rid of, and risk deciding wrong, because you aren't getting rid of it because some book author or KZitemr told you to. You are getting rid of it because you want to, you know, BE rid of it. The best way to become a minimalist is to start with nothing: No books. No exercises. No trips to the thrift store. Just less wanting. Everything else will follow, naturally, from there.

You are absolutely right. We should not be slave of crass commercialization. Just imagine if everyone lives simply & frugality, mother earth will definitely benefit from it due to less pollution

@@meow3162 Basically going with the flow of life, and taking things as they come... Not caring about what others think... Meditating... Trying to be mindful... Believing that God/Universe is working with me, not against me... Keeping my wants few and simple... Focusing on re-designing my life one little step at a time... Oh, we all have so many possibilities!!!
