I buy what “moves” me, what “sings” to me...it’s not that value or price don’t matter, but those factors are further down the list of considerations. Jon has been a valuable resource in my watch collecting journey.

I started my watch journey 5 years ago not knowing much with the exception of knowing a style I liked, so I bought TAGs, then as i became more knowledgable my taste changed .. started to buy Omega, Blancpain, Oris, Sinn , GO and several Rolexes. I don't see a theme, but tend to look for watches that demonstrate craftsmanship, value and artistic expression (to me)

I'm a guy that likes to wear all the watches I own, with a few exceptions (like the Seiko 5 my dad gave me when I was 13). I also don't find I like 99% of what's on the market so, as a result, I am prudent but impulsive if I see something I really like (like I just bought a Carrera this week that is "nothing special" but loved the look of). I also will only buy if I can get it for the right price. So, honestly, I would say I fall into so many categories here.

I'm currently saving for my first luxury watch. My current target watch is an Omega Seamaster 300 (current model wave dial in black). I want a daily wear watch that's tough, won't be bothered if it gets wet, and can be dressed up or down as needed. The brand and watch model have some serious history, and the movement is top end for function. My wrist is big enough for it. It's also in the price range I'll be comfortable with. It may well be my only higher end watch for some time. Any thoughts?

@@mt24Carson I have. They just don't appeal to me as much as the Seamaster as an only watch for a while. The titanium one is really nice and would be a great casual watch. If I didn't want to be able to dress it up for those times I actually had to get more formal, that would be a very possible choice.

Great video, I don't know which way to go now, I bought some I shouldn't have had. Some watches I like are not particularly good with value retention, and I worry about that. After you have a couple of Rolexes, it seems redundant to get more regardless of value retention. I love Breguet, and some of the Vacheron models, but they seem to lose a lot of money if you resell them.

Value retention is on the minds of collectors now more than ever. It's an inescapable aspect of collecting. The problem right now is there are a very small segment of watches that are lightning hot while everything else is, generally, fairly soft on the secondary market. Watches are not meant to be assets (but some can obviously become an asset). Another problem is that sometimes collectors confuse liquidity in their collection with equity. Watches are much like cars - own them, wear them, enjoy them and they just aren't going to be worth what you paid for it when you're ready to move on from it. The way I look at it, watches fall into two categories: Value Retention and Value Buys. Breguet still makes a lovely, lovely watch - but it's a Value Buy brand whereas your Rolex SPORTS models are definitely in the Value Retention category. I tell customers all the time, if you got a deal on brand X for a big big discount from your local AD new, how do you think it's going to perform when you go to unload it down the road? You're going to take a bath on it. I think it's important to just manage expectations on each piece you add to the collection and use sound judgement. Anyway, I could go on and on. Thanks for watching and happy collecting! JC

Strong points here. Its very much a personal thing on how to be a watch collector. I Think for myself the number one reason why i buy a watch is that is has to do something more than just being a watch, it has to make me smile and tell a story about me as the owner! Its has to be a watch that speaks to me - Like curtain Music that just means the World to me because it created a emotion/feeling etc. Thats why i collect watches! And to be able to pass the watches that i own onwards to my kids when Im not around anymore is Like saving a little bit of history and memory.....thats why the first watch i Got was not bought by me but given to me by my dad🙌 #priceless

My number one tip stop at a cheap quartz because it gets costly
@dougt5357
5 жыл бұрын
I guess the first tip should be, 'Have gobs of money just laying around'! I love to look at these watches because so many of them are works of art that are also incredible pieces of engineering. The rub is that a Ferrari is the same and I can't afford that either! When you look at what is for sale at Watchbox you ask yourself, 'Who are these videos made for'? I don't want to put them down because obviously there is a market there and they do very well apparently. Plus, listening to Tim talk about a particular watch borders on voyeuristic. It is just so much like the peasants watching the bourgeoisie eat cake. A 'collection' of 30 or 40 watches that average $5k or more, each. Whoa! Maybe I don't need to get the transmission on my car fixed or the kid's college fund can be a tad lighter if I can get a nice deal on a Datejust. I will continue to look and dream. Even peasants can walk through the Museum of Art and find joy there.

Hi there! Not every watch or watch collection has to cost gobs of money. We (WatchBox) focus our attention to higher end brands because that's business we're in. If you collected $15 watches and loved what you had, I think that's great! Nothing wrong with it at all. There are interesting and cool watches are all kinds of different prices. Believe me, I understand exactly the point you're making here, and I wanted to let you know that if you are interested in watches, even on a tight budget, there are plenty of options out there and not to be discouraged. I hope you are able to continue proudly with your watch collecting journey, no matter the price point! JC

@@joncallahan1963 Thank you so much for your reply! I am not sure how I even got connected to Watchbox. It was about 6 or 7 months ago and I am HOOKED! I have been a car enthusiast for almost all my life. As I mention above, I see so many similarities in watches. Art and engineering blended in a magnificent way. One of the first cars I ever owned was a 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider that I bought second hand. I passed that car on almost 45 years ago and there is hardly a day goes by that I don't dream of owning another. Before I invest in a watch, that car will be in my garage. I have a Casio G-Shock Solar Waveceptor watch and I love it! Tells me everything I need to know, doesn't need a battery to be replaced, and accurate, excuse me, Atomic clock accurate! BUT, it isn't a piece of art. So, as a peasant, I will continue to peruse the inventory of Watchbox and dream. I love watching your videos and learning each day a little more about watches. My heritage is Swiss but, alas, not in watchmaking. I am envious of those who do have 'collections' and am I truly happy for them. I have found myself watching Hodinkee (?) videos and the love and pride these people (obviously rich) have in their collections is inspiring. Someday I may win the lottery and sit across from you in Philly and start a proper collection. Until then I watch and dream and learn. Thank you again for responding...
