LEROY TOWNSHIP, Ohio-- Interstate 90 remains closed in all but one westbound lane between Route 44 and Route 528.
ODOT said the goal is to reopen the highway before Friday morning rush hour.
The area was shut down just before 3 p.m. Thursday, following crashes involving nearly 50 vehicles; that includes 20 commercial vehicles and a Greyhound bus.
At least 19 people were taken to the hospital.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said there are still a number of tractor-trailers and damaged vehicles that must be removed from the roadways before the interstate can be completely reopened.
They thanked area departments for assisting. "A note of thanks to all fire departments and police personnel from Willoughby to Madison along the interstate 90 Corridor who worked together to get the injured from their vehicles that were trapped and to get stranded motorists moving again. Thanks as well to the many tow companies who were instrumental in helping to get people out of vehicles and to move the damage to vehicles from the accident scene. Thanks as well to area police departments who helped handle the diverted traffic along route 20, Route 2 and Route 84.
Our prayers for those injured and wishes for a speedy recovery."
At around 5 p.m., the sheriff's office said it could be about 4-6 hours minimum before lanes are open again.
Cars were being diverted off Interstate 90 about six miles before the accident. I-90 E is closed at exit 200, the Chardon exit. There is no detour. Cars can take 44 North or South to alternate routes.
There were extreme delays getting up to Route 44 because the on-ramp is a sheet of ice.
We were told that it wastaking people about two hours to get from Route 44 to Route 6.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office asked that, if possible, please stay off the road in these areas during the traffic rerouting.
