Wow, very helpful! We once used a Tom Tom (probably 10-years ago) here in Colorado and it actually directed me to turn down a dirt road but that's when we had a very small 18-footer and, boy, that was about 5-miles of fun as the road got worst and worst, up and down a pretty big hill!

Hey Jerry, at 13:05 you move the Memphis KOA into slot C, and Best Holiday Trav-L Park (near Chattanooga) ahead of it into slot B. They're supposed to be flipped bc you'll hit Memphis well before Chattanooga. That's why only 1 red pin popped up on the map, instead of 2. Google Maps will assume you'll want to double-back to Memphis after reaching Chattanooga. Just an error I wanted to point out so that others are aware of it, in case they make a similar mistake. Happy travels 😊

Jerry, thanks for all your information. We live in central Arkansas. My parents loved Maumelle park. They would camp close to the launch ramp and sit and watch people launching their boats. @iLoveRVlife
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dennis. Glad we can share. Great park. One of our favorites. May head back to Arkansas this year with a stop at Hot Springs. We don't have a second tank yet. Thinking about adding 40 gallons before we head west in the fall. That would double our capacity. Don't think I would want more - just a weight and bed space issue, plus that gives us around 700 miles between fill ups. I'm also flipping a coin on computer fill vs. manual. Leaning toward the later with a manual valve and fill kit.

I always double-check my route for clearances before I leave

Jerry, Thanks for the video! I stumbled on a couple of other Rand McNally products that are even better than the Motor Carrier Atlas. RVND7 and the OverDryve 7 RV. They route you based on the particulars of your RV (height, length, width, even if\how much propane you have on board).....plus free map updates for life. I haven’t bought one yet, but am currently leaning that way. store.randmcnally.com/rv.html Cheers!

I want to plan a trip with overnight stays at state parks. I know I need to be there by 1pm to get a spot. How do I figure this out with google when I can only travel at 55-60 mph and google maps assumes faster speeds?
@iLoveRVlife
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. Although not perfect, this is a rule of thumb I use. I too drive under the speed limit. I add 10 minutes for ever hour. We stop for a leg stretch every 3 or 4 hours, add another 15. If we plan to stop for lunch at a rest area or truck stop another 30 minutes. If I'm traveling through a large city (Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, etc.) I'll add another 30 minutes for congestion. Again, maybe not exact, but usually works.

There are Garmin and Rand McNally trucker specific GPS units that route you around low overpasses, light weight restricted bridges and narrow lanes. Some even allow you to enter your own height width and weight specs. Peruse the manufacturer websites or grab one at a truck stop if price is no object.
@mssixty3426

I greatly appreciate that you showed the Rand McNally Motor Carrier Atlas! I've only ever used the Google Maps app, and have seen some crazy directions when just driving my car, and always have a road atlas or a map for back up. Faulty directions while towing a travel trailer would be too aggravating, always having an alternate source of road information specifically for motor carriers is so sensible. Out here in the Western U.S. there are cell-phone coverage gaps where Google Maps can't work, or the mapping is incomplete. Many thanks!
@iLoveRVlife
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. We alway have the road atlas handy, check to make sure there’s no low underpasses, and have our route written out to verify as we head down the road. One nice thing about Google Maps. You can download the route before you start out. That way, Maps continues to route even when the cell connection is lost.

Hi Zane. I have and wanted it to work. We found it wasn't the best for travel with a large RV. Going to rural campgrounds, it looks for the shortest routes. I won't say that it took us through cow pastures, but it was close. It wouldn't have been a problem if we traveled in a small class B or C.

I've tried WAZE several times. Really want to like it. They seem to use an algorithm for shortest distance. For very rural campgrounds, twice it took us down roads that were close to being a cow path. I later found much simpler and safer routes. Quite the challenge with a 40 ft 5th wheel. Hoping one day soon, these apps will have a RV or trucker route setting.

Hi Penny. WAZE works great for a car, but we tried a couple of times towing the 5th wheel. The problem was in the more rural areas. Thanks much and glad we could help. I want to use a GPS, but after buying to many to mention, I'm tired of the investment for something that routes me in a jam more than once. Google maps isn't perfect, but you can at least bend it among with the Truckers Atlas to fit your travel plans. Safe travels. Jerry...

It is unfortunate. We’ve updated the travel planning video here kzitem.info/news/bejne/13-Kk2GdsH6GjH4 We also moved to the web based AllStays Pro. Amazing service and use it throughout the year to locate campgrounds and determine safe routes for the 5th wheel.

Hi Joe. I agree. I should have made the video "7 essentials". We use this app on every trip. It's invaluable for those needed lunch breaks and leg stretches during on a long trip.

One of the reasons we don’t use. Very expensive. Usually other options to consider in the area.

Google maps is a horrible idea in the northeast. I would use copilot truck. Too many parkways that won't allow large trucks or trailers and especially 5th wheels due to low bridges.

Understand. That’s why I suggest using a Randy McNally Truckers Atlas to verify the route. Would use regardless of the GPS system used.

The 2017 version is still free, you'd just have to download it as an APK from a website instead of the app store. Not likely to have any of the updates, but still offers the same quality as the one in this video.

I update the video recently and expanded with route planning showing the Allstays Web version. Far more information, great presentation using a tablet or laptop. Here’s the video kzitem.info/news/bejne/q36kqZpjpH58mJg

Gas Buddy.

That’s only if you want to pay using Gas Buddy. That’s a feature, not a requirement to find low cost fuel. I use weekly and have never added any financial information. Great app that saves me quite a bit in our travels. Just load and tap the find gas button.

In the future think about using a laser pointer (AKA dollar tree) to point out what you are pointing at on the atlas. Hard to see with your fat finger.
