I use a hack to play the E chord seen on another site tutorial: Put your index finger on the 2nd fret of the first string.. Then put your thumb over the fret board to cover all other strings at the 4th fret. You can also play the D chord by covering the top three strings with your thumb. Cheers.

I would add not just barre chords but learning all the moveable chord shapes. When ever you are fingering all four strings even if it is not in a bare format, that shape is moveable to any position on the fingerboard. You only need to identify the root position so you recognize which chord you will be playing depending on where you are on the fingerboard. The shapes exist for most chord types…mac, min 7ths, mac 7ths, diminished etc. Plus, the exist with roots on different strings so in one shape the root might be ono the 3rd string yet in another of the same type the root is on the first string. this will give you so many different options to progress faster

Hi Ms B, hope all is well with you. After watching this, I would now consider myself to be just inside the door of intermediate. I know the 20 chord shapes and can play them, however some are a little bit of a struggle to transition to at times but if I practice enough I can get there. One thing I learned from you very early on is to not avoid difficult chords like Bb and E or barre chords. Sometimes I play them well, sometimes not so well. I have been playing 10 months and have just started to learn some easy chord melody tunes. Happy Birthday is a good chord melody tune to start with which I played for a friend this weekend as it was his Birthday. Was lovely to be able to play that both strumming and chord melody style for him. The great thing is that I have introduced a couple of people to the Ukulele recently and one person has told me that I'm a great teacher! What?! Me?! I know only too well that is because I had a great teacher in the first place. That being you of course. If you are going to the NAMM show. Have a fab time! Much love to you.

Thanks. I think my strumming is pretty good, maybe class it at almost intermediate to advanced (depends on strumming pattern or even how I feel on the day lol). Fingerpicking is very basic, struggles with coordination - fingers pluck the wrong string or sometimes completely fail to pluck at all. Noticed Feng E places his thumb on top of the fretboard before he starts to play, I guess to bed his fingers in the correct position (as can be seen in the thumbnail for his Carless whisper video). Will definitely be having a go at your 30 day playlist.

This might sound weird, but as a lefty playing right-handed I feel like my strumming, chucking, and fingerpicking are my weakest links. Started the 30 Day Challenge in September, and it probably took me more like 60 days going through and practicing later songs for a week rather than a day most times. I do well with the fretting stuff that most folks seem to complain about, but I do still struggle to do things like sing while playing island strum on songs. I know Have You Ever Seen the Rain, but I still can't get it up to speed and easily lose my rhythm while singing certain sections (it seems Stand By Me is the easiest on that strum for me by a lot). It's also tricky staying on the right strings for fingerpicking sometimes. Are there any exercises you can recommend for increasing dexterity and control in that hand? I wanna work my way up to the 30 Day Course, but I worry that my right hand isn't there yet.
@BernadetteTeachesMusic

@@BernadetteTeachesMusic Random tip: Have you tried watching the videos in a mirror to play with the left?
@FenrirInFlowers
4 жыл бұрын
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic - I have considered playing lefty instead, and if I decide that this is really holding me back instead of something I can master I'll switch. September was basically a restart for me with the uke because when I first tried to learn a few years back I got derailed by an injury. My first go round saw a lot of swapping between left and right trying to figure out how to adapt. Lefties have three options for how to play, and all of them come with some kind of compromise. At some point I have to commit to one of the compromises, so I really want to give it a fair shot. I held myself back switching and trying to decide last time. Now, I'm way ahead of how far I got back then.

I got it! I thought I was playing slowly enough, but I wasn't. I had to go slower. Finally! The lyrics aren't rushing out of my brain, and my hand isn't getting hopelessly confused by the rhythm. Been working on bringing it up to speed without rushing. Added a few fingerpicking exercises to my daily warm-up from a book called Ukulele Beginner to Brilliant that I got for Christmas, and my fingers are finding the strings mostly without looking now. That means I just need to conquer the chuck in a song. Then I think I will be ready to start the 30 Day Course. Just want to learn two short jazz standards before Valentine's Day first. :D

No. You are not required to play the standard E chord to be an intermediate player. That is physically not possible for me. Maybe bird hand little skinny girls can do it, but not everyone. Using alternate chords (even 3 strings only) is NOT being a beginner. In fact finding your way around your limitations (which are *not* because you miss practice or not willing to learn but some limitations of your body or instrument) is THE WAY to becoming better. Stop promoting "you either do perfect or you're stuck a beginner".
