Today we are talking about 8 habits that you should avoid and the habits that you can replace these with. Let’s get straight to the point.
1. Barred Chords: many people avoid bar chords because they are intimidating. Some people will go out of their way to play songs that only have open chords. This will stunt your growth and hamper your progress.
2. Nail Length: Keep the nails on your fretting hand (the hand that holds chord shapes). Having long nails on the fretting hand will affect your form and can cause other issues.
3. Avoiding E Chord: E chord is difficult, yes. E chord is also in a lot of songs. Like mentioned earlier with the habit of avoiding barred chords, if you don’t learn E, you are holding yourself back. Take it one day at a time.
4. Tuning Habits: Every time you play your ukulele, you train your ear. If you’re playing a ukulele that is out of tune, you’re training your ear to hear that as “correct.” Have you ever seen musicians tune by ear? Tuning your ukulele with a tuner will help you get there. Here’s a link to a tuner that I like to use: amzn.to/2Fu9PkN. I also like to use Pano Tuner on my phone (it’s a free application).
5. Unattainable Goals: Sometimes people set the goal of playing songs like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” without realizing that they should set goals that will help them get there first. If this is your goal, you should first look at the chords in the song and learn them. Then learn the strumming pattern, then learn how to switch between these chords. Set smaller goals, but set more of these.
6. Index Finger: Our index finger is a dominant finger. Sometimes this finger wants to be the boss and do everything on the fingerboard. Resist the urge to overuse this finger by using your middle, ring and pinky fingers as well.
7. Island Strum: The island strum is great because it is a useful tool. The only problem with the island strum is that it can hold people back over time because they don’t learn new strumming patterns. If you feel like this is you, try following this video. You will learn 4 new strumming patterns here. • 4 Strumming Patterns Y...

UKULELE USED:
I'm playing the Nova ukulele made by Enya Music. Retail Price ~$89
Link to buy: amzn.to/2FggXRK
This ukulele is available in other colors (white, black, orange, blue). I like this ukulele because it is partially carbon fiber and partially plastic. This means that I don't have to worry about the environment affecting the ukulele. I have this ukulele hanging up next to my desk and I play it daily :)
