IDEAL introduces a new family of four different Non Contact Volt Testers that safely detect the presence of AC voltage to meet your every need from the professional electrician to the home owner that are UL and CSA listed and carry a 2 year warranty. The IDEAL 61-637 and 61-627 Non-Contact Voltage Testers are designed for the professional and automatically detect and indicate the presence of voltage within specified ranges. The 61-637 detects voltages from 24 to 600 volts AC and includes an audible on or off button and a flashlight. The 61-627 detects standard voltages from 50 to 600 volts AC and both testers provide non-contact detection of voltage through an antenna enclosed in plastic at the tip of the tester. Both testers provide non-contact detection of voltage by sensing the presence of the electromagnetic field present around live conductors and do not need to make direct contact to bare conductors to achieve this. The tip is illuminated by a green solid LED when powered on and switches to a red flashing LED, and an audible beep that increases in frequency as the voltage level it detects increases. They are powered by two 1.5 volt triple A batteries and feature a lanyard tie-off point, pocket clip, an auto power off function and a low battery indication. This sleek compact voltage indicator is designed for the electrical contractors and have a Cat IV safety rating and can be used throughout a building. It can identify hot verses neutral or ground conductors, breaks in the line of a hot conductor or to indicate that power is off at receptacles, switches, inside electrical panels or anywhere along the length of a conductor. The voltage tester can be used by pushing the power button in the middle of the tester. A solid green light verifies the tester is on and ready to use. Then verify the tester’s operation on a known voltage source before using by placing the tip of the tester near an AC source like this outlet location to obtain a voltage indication. Voltage is indicated by the flashing red light and audible tone when testing an electrical circuit. Then test the unknown circuit to verify if voltage is present. Both testers can be powered off by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds and will automatically power off after 10 minutes of inactivity.Notice at an outlet that inserting the tip of the tester into a slot indicates voltage at the hot conductor only and will not indicate voltage on the neutral or ground conductors if none exists. This feature allows the voltage detector to correctly identify hot conductors in outlets where conductors are incorrectly wired and polarity may have been reversed. The receiving antenna is very sensitive and can easily identify a hot conductor. Notice as I pass along the length of this extension cord that the conductors are twisted inside the cord and the voltage detector flashes Red when the Hot conductor is near the outer jacket of the cord and green when not. You can also use the voltage detectors to find a break in a hot conductor as well. The tester will indicate the presence of voltage until the break in a cable is passed by. This feature quickly identifies the problem light bulb that is open in a string of Christmas lights. The light bulb that does not indicate voltage is present on both conductors to the light bulb in the string needs to be replaced. The 61-637 voltage detector defaults to the audible On mode when first powered on. To turn the audible feature off in noise sensitive or restricted environments depress the speaker button for less than 1 second. Depress the button again to reactivate the audible feature. Low battery indication is indicated if battery voltage is less than around 2.4 volts, the green LED in the tip will flash 3 times and the buzzer will send out one long audible beep, then turn off the device, An LED Flashlight in the tip operates independently of the tester functions and can be used to illuminate the work area. Press the Flashlight Button to turn it On or Off. The tester is set to flashlight off when powered on and will Auto Power Off after 5 minutes of no voltage detection.
The IDEAL non-contact voltage testers are a simple to use tester for electricians and can save a lot of time in the field. They can used to verify that they have cut power with the correct breaker before working on electrical circuits in a building safely. While any non-contact voltage indicator can be a handy and time saving tool, IDEAL Industries strongly encourages the use of a secondary voltage measurement device such as a digital multi meter to confirm 100 percent that the conductor is truly de-energized before working on the circuit.
