I read Age of Innocence recently and think it is worthwhile, especially in this day and age. The ending might have redeemed it at least somewhat for you. I can't explain why it might be a valuable read without spoiling it for people who haven't read it yet. It was beautifully written, and many of the thoughts expressed in it were very insightful and, I thought, rather brilliant.

I agree. The characters weren’t good people but I think that was the point Wharton was making. I didn’t like the story (cheating sucks) but I’ve thought about the ending since I finished it in Jan 2023

i feel like you’re very fickle with your opinions. while i’m still holding out hope on you reading perfume (which i’m certain you’ll love), if you want a better version of what madeleine miller does try suzanna clarke. she writes fantasy in a literary fiction manner (but not in magical realism way dw) both “jonathan strange & mr norrell” and “piranesi” which is soo much better than circe. however, if you still take my recommendations with a grain of salt, if you want good nonfiction, i adore “the hour of our death” by philippe aries.

I finally finished The Lord of the Rings this year, and the bottom line is, I'm glad it's over! I finished the trilogy and then found that there were long appendices, much of which needed reading also for a more comprehensive understanding of the characters and story--for example, where the characters came from, and details about the natures of the various races; how all their lives turned out; how, at what age, and under what circumstances they died; and where they were buried. There were many great and profound thoughts and lines that were quoteworthy and well worth remembering. I would have highlighted many passages, but I have a nice volume and didn't want to mark it up :(.

Funny enough, I read all of Toni Morrison's books this year since she's one of my biggest inspirations as a writer. I think every American should read Beloved, it's probably the truest story of our country and people need to digest that. I think a lot of things would be solved and understood if they did. Slavery was traumatic and so much of the way the country is ran to this day is the result of that. It's a heavy one though, I didn't like it the first time I read it but I loved it the second time. It's certainly not the easiest of hers to read though so I feel you.

Hey Charles, I'm new to your channel - but had to comment on this video because there is a significant overlap between the books you are getting rid of and my reading history. To the bullet points: 1. Greek mythology retellings - I enjoyed both of the Madeline Miller books you are getting rid of, but I would say they are "light entertainment". For a better class of Greek myth retellings, check out Pat Barker's "The Silence of the Girls" and "The Women of Troy" (with a third book coming this year). And just in general, read Pat Barker. I would say her best novel is "Liza's England", but the Regeneration trilogy is also amazing. 2. Dark academia - I feel like the movie "Saltburn" may have both ruined and perfected this genre, but - Stephen Fry has written far better novels than "Revenge". Specifically, "Making History" has a genius premise and is also surprisingly moving. And if I correctly understand the concept of "dark academia", a great example is Charles Palliser's "Rustication". 3. "The Other" - I just read this recently, and while I didn't completely love it, I am curious why you though it falls into the category of "magic realism". I didn't find that to be the case. But, that aside, the reason I picked it up is because I'm a huge fan of Dan Chaon, who wrote the forward to the edition you showed - all of his novels are brilliant, but especially "Await Your Reply". 4. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" - unlike you, I do enjoy magic realism from time to time. I don't think this book is its best example, but it does have a killer last page. That said, a better example of magic realism is "Terra Nostra" by Carlos Fuentes - which is a *long* and occasionally tedious book, but worth it in the end. Anyway - keep up the great "booktube" content!
