Wow, this video and in particular that soundtrack brought back memories! I grew up with one of these exact same outboards; we moved to a suburb on the Harbour in '79 and myself (then 10ys old) & my younger brother got a new 10ft tinny with an Evinrude 6hp for Christmas. These motors are absolutely unbreakable and will run forever at WOT with only minimal service (as long as you flush them regularly with freshwater if running them in saltwater; same as any other outboard I suppose). This thing ran flawlessly for over 30 years until it was lost in a garage sale mum & dad had when I was away overseas (I would have never let it go).

Nice one 👌 Glad I could bring back some memories mate. Similar for me, dad had a 6hp from when I was about 4 years old and we were still using it until I was about 17, great motors. Cheers 🍻

Scoots along pretty good. Take good care of it, these were some of the best outboards made by any manufacturer....Can't buy em like this one anymore...

Very very true. Like a little clock, you can even spin the flywheel by hand and she will start straight up. 👌👍👍

Just bought a 1977 today that spent 30 years hanging on the back of a dingy and was never used for $100. New fuel line and water pump in the mail. I’m going to hang it behind my Lowe 1040.

shes got a little piston slap but runs sweet. id do a refresh with new rings. my "secret" to getting these to run super quite is to add a dab of gel seal (tiny dot) on top of the center main bearing like i do on the big v4 and v6 motors.

Hi mate, Great little motors 👌 Not sure if the nocking is piston slap but if it is, rings would not clear it up in my experience, you may mean something else or my understanding of piston slap may differ. I don’t own that motor any more, I find them pretty gutless compared to other brands (I do love the small Johnson and evinrude of that era and earlier for smoothness) I have rebuilt a few V4 as well, the roller bearings 😂 be nice if they were in a cage. Good fun though Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

@@25hpboatracerman haha cheers. The theory goes the tiny piston to wall clearance is effected with ring wear on a small scale. a set of new rings tightens the rock/skirt slap up. since most have such low hours and little wear but the rings sit for long periods and get minor rust, they wear much more than they should. but i agree about the pre-propshaft hp motors can be weaker than the japanese competition, but by the late 80's they were on par and some surpassed them in the 6-15hp class. they did put the bearings in a cage on the big end starting with the top-mounted starter motors in 1991.

Not a bad speed on an older boat. Nice. I was thinking of buying a 3.3m punt, weighing 37kgs. Essentially, it is a car topper. I would put a 6hp outboard on the back, its max rating. Would that punt, in theory, reach reasonably high speeds for that outboard? Is the general rule of thumb, lighter boat = higher speeds, or is there another formula to consider? Ta mate

That seems about as powerful as your modified 5 hp. Those old Evinrudes and Johnsons seem good when you can fine them in decint conditions.
@25hpboatracerman

Yeah about the same, took the modified 5hp out the other day with normal fuel (was still running double oil for run in) and she got 27.4kph 👌👌 The 6 evinrude got about 24.5kph but definitely not bad up onto the plane. Cheers 🍻

Just picked up one of these for 400 and the drive shaft has no splines only a pin to hold the prop in is that normal?
@25hpboatracerman

Yep normal, it’s called a sheer pin and designed to snap if you hit a rock or log to protect the drive shaft. Good idea to carry a spare sheer pin. Cheers 🍻

Would love to mate 😂. I don’t think I could hold a camera and drive it at the same time though, way to fast. After about 55kph tiller I like to hold and not film, 88kph + tiller on a 12ft boat is nuts. 👍👍👍👍👍
