Hey Mary- Thanks for your info. Always helpful. I love my Greenstalk planters. I live in Central Texas as well. I helped set my sister, my grown children and grandchildren up with Greenstalks. We all grow different plants. Mine are filled with strawberry plants. When it's 103 day after day, I have to water about every 3 days. Mine are set up with the spinner base. I turn the planters 1/4 turn every time I water. They are great for growing greens, flowers and herbs. I wouldn't grow larger plants in them. Micro tomatoes and eight ball zucchini plants work well. Good luck with yours.

I have a green stalk vertical planter (5 tier). The secret to having a successful vertical planter is your soil. It needs to be a light soil that can wick the water through your planter once you have an established root system. That's how it even disperses from to feeding the water. I also reuse the water daily by using the overflow pipe into a water collection system.

Very useful video. We got one of the GreenStalk vertical gardens this spring and it has worked quite well. For me, the trick was lots of water. No light sprinkle. I usually spend between 5-10 minutes filling up the reservoir and letting it run down through. But that’s during the heat of our spring and early summer. This will be my first fall. Also when the seeds first began sprouting, in addition to watering down through the middle, I watered each pocket. To give a little extra help. We have lots of bugs here and so I used some bug netting in the bottom of that top reservoir, weighted down with 5 rocks, and tied bug netting around the drain pipe opening at bottom. Just to prevent bugs and dirt from getting in there and blocking it. Might be overkill but I felt much better doing that. I grew cucumbers this spring and quickly discovered I needed the supports they sell separately. We have the 5 stack original planter and I find three sets of supports are sufficient-top, middle, bottom. Plan to do lettuce and, after watching this video, zucchini this fall. According to the A&M Agrilife Vegetable Planting Guide (free printout) here in Central Texas we can also have a second crop of potatoes. Between my yard and my daughter’s yard we have 15 raise beds so lots of room for experimenting. Thanks so much for your encouraging and so helpful video!

Got your cookbook the other day! I'm so excited about trying some of the recipes. We used to plant a food plot for deer, which we would get lots of turnips in. I love eating turnips raw, but also cooked with lots of mixed vegetables and sausage. I love radishes. I even love letting them go to seed and eating the seed pods. I got 2 greenstalks this year. I did not get the wheels, but I may order them for next year to add on. I planted strawberries, different herbs, and flowers. I plan to switch over to some lettuces, radishes, etc. I am thinking about ordering a couple more. I have seen people growing tomatoes, beans, etc. in them .

Turnips are great in stews. I have never been a fan of them, but 1/2 inch cubes of them are called for in my crock pot recipe for New England Short Ribs (along with 1 inch cubed potatoes) and braised for hours in that stew they are fantastic. I have put them with parsnips and potatoes in many other stews that are cooked low and slow and they work very well in them.

@@MarysNest Container gardening, on a cement patio, takes a lot of pot rotation. I spray shaded leaves with water, just to cool them down. If anything goes droopy, in the sun, I rotate it to the shade. I let the plant settle down. Then, 30 minutes later, I spray the leaves, from a spray bottle, with no worry of the sun reaching that shaded corner. I find I water twice as much, so the second round of poured water is done in the tray, so the plant can choose to suck up water through the roots. Rotating watering methods, in container pots, makes patio gardening easier, in the extreme heat waves we get, all the time. ❤️ I never water any plant, while it is exposed to the sun, so the plants don’t burn, even if it is cloudy, if the sun shines in a spot, at particular time of day, with clouds out, that sun is still in that spot, so I wait, till twilight a lot of times, to water the soil, in the pots.

Verticle Gardening in central Texas zone 8b I have the leaf style green stalk I would in hind site get the deeper one. it holds a lot of soil the water does not hold in the top it drains down in minutes to other small drip pans at each level that keep enough water to get the soil damp but not hold for more than a minute, I fill the top pan 2 times in a row in the morning and that has been enough in this heat in partial shade to keep the thyme alive and I am hoping it will thrive when it cools a bit. I have done lettuce and bush beans in it this spring. ALSO a bonus for you I have been making Wild Texas Persimmon fruit spread for years, this year I did syrup and it is Lovely! I use a food mill and usually compost the skins and seeds, This year I am using all of the skins and seed mess to make a vinegar to use for salad dressings and then compost the skins and seeds. This is a delicious mostly over looked fruit tree all over Texas and the more you harvest the fruits the bigger they seem to get the next year. The berries start to ripen around August and can sometimes still be going strong until October. One More tip I dried some honey mesquite bean pods and I am going to grind those this weekend and add the flour / powder to my bread. I did see a recipe using the green pods to make jam, but I saw it too late to find green pods on the trees, next year. I like using a tree fruit that has mostly been called a poo-tree. since the birds and deer eat the fruit and poop the seeds to grow the trees in new places. They are native trees and should be encouraged to grow not just cut down as if the colored bird poop is a problem (wink) GOD is so good and his creation is an amazing gift. Good Gardening and may you have a Blessed harvest.

I’ve been giving the Greenstalk some thought for next year as a means to extend the kitchen garden which is closest to the house. It’s been nice to go out and grab some lettuce or tomatoes or a cucumber or fresh herbs to add to a meal. The vertical growing option seems to be very effective for small space production. The KZitem channel, ‘Becoming A Farm Girl’, grows her entire garden in green stock containers. It’s amazing what she harvests from her space. Great ideas as always! Have a blessed day sweet friend!

YES! The Greenstalk! Mine are in full afternoon sun in Central TX. An hour north of Austin. Started the on March and just today taking them down to start preparing for fall. I got a bumper crop of breakfast radishes, some beets, tiny tomatoes, several crops of arugula and tiny banana peppers. Mini zucchini, lemon cucumbers and moon squash were a failure. Beautiful foliage and flowers but despite the miniature "fruit" they still sought ground. I harvested one moon squash and by July it all withered. About 75% of the vertices watering system worked. Again, central TX, I had to water some pockets because it dried on the edges. I do plan to move them to a different area of the yard, however I need to set up a perfectly level area first. The Greenstalk MUST be perfectly level. My yard is heavily sloped. The only level spot receives afternoon full sun.

I have a greenstalk and I LOVE IT! We live in Georgia and are full sun. Get a spinner so you can turn the planter if you have in partial sun. We ended up putting it on our patio where we have a deck above us to protect from the full sun. There's a channel called Growing in the Garden and she has sail's for shade. Thinking shade cloth or sail's for protection from full sun.

I hear ya!! I’ll start some of my seeds at the end of the month, but in terms of any transplants… We’re looking at mid September given how hot it’s been lately and no rain! ❤️🤗❤️

I use GreenStalks. The lower pockets often need a spray of water and turn to get 360 exposure to sun❤ I also prefer the deeper pockets of the originals

Thank you for all your wonderful videos, Mary…I always learn so much from you! I’ve been gardening vertically since 2012 and I have lots of tips to share. However, I use a soil-less system and it’s worked out really well. Also, will be ordering your book ….I’m so excited to have all your wisdom and knowledge available in old-fashioned form. God Bless you and your family.

Hi Mary. I got a tower this year (zone 7). It takes a lot of extra water in the summer heat. I just hose it all down and use the center-water area mainly for feedings.

Dear sweet kind Miss Mary, I learn so much from you❣️ Thank you for being such a wonderful, resourceful lady, generously sharing your wealth of knowledge with the world. >>>>>Please be aware: Spinach, Swiss chard, and Sorrel are EXTREMELY high in plant toxins called Oxalates! Most people and their physicians are only familiar with oxalates as related to calcium oxalate kidney stones. I suggest Sally K Norton (book: Toxic Superfoods) and Elliot Overton (EO Nutrition) who offer free content on KZitem about the toxic effects of oxalate. There is also a documented case of a man who died from eating three bowls of sorrel soup in one meal! I fear oxalate poisoning is a silent epidemic and am trying to spread the word because I have firsthand knowledge of how oxalates can wreck health. Everyone, please learn about this to save your health and the health of others. Much Love, 💗Niecey

Thank you so much for the kind words!! And yes, I agree…you have to go easy on the consumption of high oxalate foods. And always cook them and serve them with a lot of fat like butter. And thank you for the book recommendation. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

Vertical garden in hot Texas? Hum my question was adding water to the reservoir now that water sits for a few hours and now it’s over 100 degrees not many plants drink hot water?🤷♀️🤷♀️ that’s why I haven’t ordered one. Will be interesting to see how it does in this hot weather but might be nice in that can roll the garden into the garage in cold snaps too. Lots of questions. Will be interesting to see how it does in Texas. 110 is predicted for Sunday. Yikes hot for the plants

Yes, I am anxious to try it and will see how it goes. I’ll have one video where I assemble it and then another one as the plants grow. Love, Mary ❤️🤗❤️

I live in central NM, hot and dry, and have three GreenStalk planters (two filled with strawberries and one with herbs and leafy greens) so I’m speaking from that perspective. The water reservoir is manually filled and then the water is quickly (under 5 mins) distributed to the various levels so the water does not get hot before it reaches the soil. For the last two seasons I have had mine set up with a drip irrigation system which has worked pretty well, but I’m still trying to figure out how to get it to work better. The new base that is a circle instead of the shape that matches the planters is my preference but they are both easy to move if they are on a hard surface. In my climate (7B) they stay outside all winter with no detrimental effects to the planter or the perennials. Anyway, I love the GreenStalk system.

OMGoodness...to have fresh homegrown organic strawberries in our heat of the SW, that seems like a dream. It might be worth it just for that! Do you plant seeds or crowns, and do you know the variety that does well for you?
@lindaspencer6547
Жыл бұрын
@@irisdude I’m sorry, I don’t know the varieties. I’m guessing that you can find a kind that is well suited to your climate. For me the challenge is reliability great flavor. On mine, some times they are great and sometimes just ok.
