Thanks, Michael and Rachel. This is the most profound and sincere account of prostitution I have ever heard. How wonderfully Rachel cuts through the misapprehensions and gobbledegook that one encounters when listening to opinions about prostitution. Compare Rachel’s grass roots wisdom about the exploitation and abuse of women in the context of prostitution with the whining academic self -entitled fluff of the physicist Sheehy a few episodes ago. It’s the difference between true exploitation, carefully considered, and imagined, cry-me-a-river ‘oppression .’

I'm sorry for her experiences and the masses of women out there in similar situations. But the absolutist statement, that *no* woman does this of her own volition and *all* prostitution is bad with her sample group of one - her own life, just doesn't sit well with me.
@lancescoville7123

If one would not wish this plight on their own daughter, or sister, or mother, and if one recognizes in principle the deep soul-crushing affects of prostitution, then a sampling of "one" is one more than is required to condemn it. If one wouldn't mind this plight on their daughter, sister, or mother, and can not recognize the deep soul-crushing affects of prostition, then no matter how large the sampling number is, it would probably not be enough to change their view. In her book, Moran does cite her years being prostituted and her close associations with many of the women she encountered during that time, not so much as proof, but as shared experiences. How many "samples" would be enough?

Beyond claiming that she has never known a woman who wanted to be in prostitution, out of the hundreds she came to know during 7 years of it, I don't think she has said absolutely no woman wants to be prostituted, unless in an off-hand manner. You'd have to interview each woman to say that. Neither was that claim made in my earlier comment. It actually says--implies--that the issue of a "sample count" is irrelevant to the exploitative, trauma-inducing reality of prostitution. Invalidating Moran as a sample of "one" (ignoring her contact with hundreds of women) is among the red herring tactics used to distract from her much deeper message. Red herring tactics will always be well served by exceptions. Among the enslaved, there were lucky ones who were contented in their circumstances and dreaded their emancipation. Undoubtedly there are women who are satisfied and lucky in the circumstances of their prostitution experience. But as it should be with laws addressing social issues, it is a question of the common good (here "common" refers to majority who are exploited) and not of the lucky minority. As long as prostitution exists without severe penalties to deter those who either exploit it or get their jollies from it, the vast majority of its victims, desperate women, will continue to be sucked into the vicious cycle of dependency upon those who exploit them, internal and social shame numbed by drug addictions, emotional paralysis, and pending violence. That--not quibbling over sample count when we know how lopsided the circumstances are-- is the relevant point, and Moran shines a revealing light on all of it. (After submitting this I noticed that strikethroughs ran through over half of my lines. Have no idea why. Did I go over the limit?)

Rachel's argument against prostitution is flawed. Her argument is rooted in her own anecdotal experience that she then projects onto others. She is obviously an angry bitter person with a vendetta. It sounds to me like Moran had issues before ever even getting involved with sex work. I'm sorry she had those, but that doesn't make her experiences in sex work universal. The idea no woman would make the choice to do sex work is highly dubious. Prostitution exists in societies of all levels of gender and income inequality and there isn't any way to get rid of it, and from what I've seen data-wise (someone can point me to data showing otherwise if that's the case) the best model to reduce the ugly sides of the trade is decriminalization, not prohibition or the Nordic Model.

I can’t help but notice that, when women have masculine fantasies (e.g., being dominant and in control of the sexual encounter), people find it erotic and sexy. But when men have feminine fantasies (e.g., being submissive and letting other be in control of the sexual encounter), people laugh and scorn them. This pattern is all part of the hatred and rejection of the feminine. We tolerate it in women because straight men have evolutionary wiring that makes it arousing. But in all else, we reject the feminine. This is even true in fiction. Today, you can’t find any feminine female characters. There’s no female who shows kindness, compassion, and all the things women are good at by nature. (In fact, if you even dare to suggest that those qualities are found more in females, you get backlash!) Instead, all of the fictional female characters have to be “kick ass” girls who like the same things boys like - and are often superior to boys in all those respects. And they call this Feminism? Seems like precisely the opposite to me.

@@edelgyn2699 what exactly is your issue with the OP's comment? Was it his assertion that there are general behavioural and psychological differences (as well as the the obvious physiological differences) between men and women? I'm a woman and I think you'd have to be willfully ignorant, or just generally ignorant about our evolutionary history as a species, to believe that that isn't true. I also very much agree with the OP that it doesn't do any service to women (or men) to pretend that there are no statistical differences to be found in the psychosexual behavioral patterns of men and women (and this is indeed one of my many issues with modern mainstream feminism, and one of the ways that I think it has actually harmed women).

I’ve always felt bad for any woman who had to do this, and I’ve always been thoroughly disgusted by the men who would engage in this type of behaviour.
