I'm not defending anything because I never had a chance to watch the movie, only read about it, but I will say that manipulating the situation and hitting her weak spots (being in a religious cult and being the only survivor of a mass suicide) was not the way to go about expressing their displeasure. Yes, the kids had every right to mourn their mother and yes, the father was selfish in wanting his kids to instantly bond with their new stepmother, but I don't think it warranted torturing her psychologically and throwing her thousands of paces back mentally. From what I've read, they played religious music, hid her medication, caused the death of her dog by letting it outside in the snow and not even having the sense to let it back in and just hide it from the stepmother in the house, and convincing her that they were all dead and in Purgatory until they confessed their sins all to avenge their mother. Those were all premeditated and came from two kids who should have known better and they did know better because I believe I read that they knew what her trauma was from being in that cult as a child and they exploited it anyway. All of their actions were wrong, but the only truly direct deaths (the dog, their father, and presumably themselves and the stepmom at the end) resulted from the kids' actions, so I think people have just as much of an opinion to think the kids were the true villains of the film and not just the dad or the stepmom.

A far friendlier version, but MBD had the idea first, didn’t pull any punches and never gets credit. "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" is a masterpiece in both deconstructing the prototypical slasher and BEING a prototypical slasher for the final act. One of the most underrated tricks it pulls off is the switch from documentary footage-style shooting to proper movie shooting while doing so in an on-screen and logical fashion. EDIT - Josh may have missed part of what also makes "Behind the Mask" a great story. Leslie DOES worship the glories of Michael, Jason, and Freddy, but to say he then transfers that to "real life" is overlooking a major part of this film's canon; Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, etc, all exist in real life and Leslie Vernon is trying to join their ranks, not emulate them.
@direblade1437

Yeah, this! There's also a little Easter egg when he takes the film crew to meet his mentor. The "Lament Configuration", which is the device that summons cenobites in the Hellraiser series, is a display piece in their living room. Makes one think that whole 'world' exists in this film, too. I'd add, as well, that Josh says Leslie is comically bad at being a killer. I don't think so. He seems exceptionally good at it, as shown in the final act. I think maybe the misunderstanding comes from how disarming and charming Leslie is up until that point.

It is a cool and atmospheric movie. However, there are so many things that stretch the suspension of disbelief beyond the breaking point. * This program has been going on for decades with children that match the originals as well that are the same age. That means once the government discovers that an original is pregnant, they have to future an impregnation between the two copies that match and hope that resulting child is ALSO a copy of the original aboveground. This seems to be going on long after the government abandoned their initial cloning program. * How the hell was the government able pull off the logistics are cloning, feeding, raising, and housing Tethered from everyone in America, all 300 million citizens. * Considering how violent they were, how did they survive so well after abandonment. * You touched upon knowledge the doppelgangers had of the originals. The film tries to handwave this as the bodies were connected via the originals' souls, hence the term Tethered. However, that comes off as a lazy handwave. The list goes on until it leaves the realm of science fiction and enters magical. If they had merely said that the Tethered were from some dark parallel universe that wanted the freedom that this universe provided and that is where there was a twisted version of everyone like I assumed from the trailer, I would have completely bought it and looked back more fondly on the film. Knowing what I know now, the only reason to watch or re-watch is for the outstanding performances of the actors and not the actual plot/twist.

Leslie Vernon was useless? It shows with everything he does that he’s extremely gifted at playing this role. Yes he’s affable and dorky, but when they go to meet him he shows how he can move so quick that it almost seems like he’s in two places at once. He knows anatomy and slight of hand, he’s an impossible gymnast. He’s studied and determined. It very quickly freaks out the camera crew in how surprisingly in control of the situation he is. He’s no where near the loser described here

I don't think this dude has ever seen "Behind the Mask". He called Leslie inept but that dude was on top of every part of the plan. And he mentioned him wanting to be as big a Freddy, Jason and Michael so he created a scenario in the real world. NO because in the movie that is their real world, Freddy Michael and Jason are real in this Universe. Whom ever is writing the scripts for these may want to actually watch the movies instead of what ever they are doing, they have a lot of mistakes about things in these videos and don't get me started on their obvious mispronunciation of well known people's names...you can google how to say them for fooks sake. Anyway love the channel thanks for the content.

Not a horror movie(more suspense), but the look on the good guy's face at the end of 1999's Arlington Road is one of horror. For those who haven't seen it, a college professor and widower whose deceased wife was a federal agent carries anger for how he lost her(think something akin to the Ruby Ridge incident) but still has a friendship with his wife's old agency friend. A new neighbor moves in by Mister Professor and he starts noticing all these suspicious things. Clever twist ending that makes a surprising amount of sense. *SPOILER ALERT* Neighbor is actually a domestic terrorist who targeted Professor and has a plan for him. Professor learns Neighbor plans to bomb the federal building Wife's Friend works in, so he rushes there as quickly as he can. Once he gets there, Friend tells Professor there's no bomb, leaving him confused, then he goes to his own car and looks in the trunk to find a massive bomb just before it goes off. He made the perfect fall guy due to the loss of his wife and his anger with the system.

Set in a world where Freddy, Jason, and Chucky all exist, he takes a college film crew out to show them how and why he's doing what he's doing. My best guess is because the whole gender/ "Raised by an abusive psycho" reveal doesn't actually play any part in who you were meant to be rooting for. The whole movie is set up so you think Angela or Ricky is the killer, since the killer is getting revenge on those that wronged Angela. So you learn something about the person you suspected was the killer anyway but that doesn't change that you were meant to suspect them...if that makes sense

Secret Window-you think Johnny Depp is the hero or at least a sympathetic character (his wife cheats on him and leaves him for another man), and then Depp is met by a mysterious creepy character who says that Depp stole his manuscript for a book. Suddenly this creepy dude is killing folk and it culminates with the twist being that the creepy dude was a psychological manifestation of Depp’s rage at being betrayed by his wife. Sort of similar is an episode of the TV show 'The Librarians.' The shows about a team of people that deal with supernatural threats in modern times. They find themselves trying to help a young woman who got trapped in a house that has been known to pop up, take a few people, kill them then disappear for a decade or so then appear somewhere else. Only, you come to find out the young woman is a serial killer from the 1800's, the house is a wish granting entity and an unwilling participant in the killings. Not quite horror since the show is more action comedy but a similar premise.

Taking a wild guess and say you're talking about GoT. People are not upset about her becoming evil. People are upset about how it was done. Her actions in the finale were not in line with her character. It's not like, in the finale, they exposed how every single thing she'd done previously were because she was absolutely batshit insane and had no morals at all. It instead went against everything she'd previously stood for because the writers of the show did not take the time they needed to properly wrap things up.

I'm glad you didn't make the "protagonist = hero; antagonist = villain" mistake seen in a lot of discussions like these. There is a proper term for main characters who are also the villain - protagonist villain, not antihero. It's fairly simple: protagonist - the main character, or the character whose actions drive the plot forward antagonist - a character that opposes the protagonist or the goals of the protagonist hero - a morally good character whose goal is to do the right thing villain - a morally evil character with generally selfish motivations; villains seldom do evil for the purpose of doing evil antihero - a hero who lacks traditional heroic qualities - Batman, Spider-Man, The Man with No Name, Dirty Harry, Nathan Drake antivillain - a villain who lacks traditional villain qualities - Many Bond villains are exceptionally polite and friendly as they try to destroy the world protagonist villain - a villain who is the main character - every entry on this list antagonist hero - a hero who opposes the protagonist villain Antagonist heroes are rare. Most of the time, when you have a protagonist villain, the plot goes out of its way to pit that protagonist against other, more evil villains. We root for Walter White not because he's a good guy - he's irredeemably evil - but because he's going up against people worse than he is.
