For me, it was the reality of NOT going into debt. Operating on credit to "impress" others is a dead end street, and only serves to make others rich. And, to add insult to injury, one finds that those ppl you were trying to impress don't really matter anyway. Well done, Ronald! Thank you. I subscribed.

Delayed gratification is wonderful. Decades ago in the 1980's when my husband and I were just starting to furnish our home we decided that we would find classic, high quality pieces and that we would always, always pay them in cash. This was so much fun. It gave us time to look and decide what we really wanted. It also meant that we bought our lovely mahogany dining room table first but no chairs. Then every two or three months we bought another chair. Each chair purchased was a thrill. We laughed at owning only one chair at first and used to make a game of whose night it was to use the chair. When we hit the point of owning 4 chairs we celebrated by having another couple over for dinner. Eight chairs meant a more elaborate dinner party. If we had simply bought all the chairs at once we would have missed out on those small celebrations which are still fresh in my memory. I no longer own most of the furniture but that's because they were such high quality that they have been passed on to my two daughters. The book cases, table and chairs, desks and other lovely pieces are now gracing their homes.

I have gotten out of debt countless times but always fall back into the financing trap. I've gotten so much better though. My goal is to be completely debt free...again, by the end of 2023. I think that's more than doable for everything I owe currently. I literally just started a small sinking fund this morning for some things I want done around the house. Another great video, Mr. Banks! Keep them coming.

Awesome advice. I didn't figure these things out until I was 35. Thank God I got it then. Unfortunately we neglect to teach our children how to manage $$. After I finally got a glimpse, I decided to read & listen to successful debt free folks. Now, I'm trying to convince young folks to stay away from paying interest. Showing them the amount of money that's thrown away on interest. Also how crucial it is to have an excellent credit score. Good credit scores will enable lower credit rates for that house & or car & to pay them off as fast as possible.

I wish you framed it into bad debt and good debt. Paying off a mortgage at 2.85% isn't going to fast track your future but rather slow it down when that money can work elsewhere better for you. I understand that credit card debt and other high interest debt is most likely what you are talking about but never going into debt shouldn't be the goal, just to use it smartly and in a way that sets you up for the future. This might be difficult for some people to distinguish so if the options are have any type of debt or none we should chose none but debt is just a tool that if used correctly can be great.
