After my personal experience with 5.4 Fords and the problems they have I don't want to put one of those in. Following the old no replacement for displacement it looks like an LS is the ticket. Of course I would like to keep it all Ford, maybe a 427" stroked Windsor or...a 588" stroked and poked 460..

@Blade Youell You can do the same thing to a modular that was done to the LS, but the bottom end will need to be completely forged out ( crank, rods, pistons ) along with a better intake manifold. Keep the PI heads and cams, stud the heads, MLS head gaskets, bigger throttle body and elbow, upgraded coils and ignition components. Then add the same turbo, same sized injectors and aftermarket efi. Adjust boost to get the number. Oh, and spend $$$$$ on a built auto trans to take the power.

The only way to make real decent power is to boost them. And even then they aren't that fast. There are a few exception's like Rob. P's 95 MN12 hitting high 9's but he's dumped a crap ton of money into his 2 valve. Way more than what a decent 5.3 will cost you to build. That's just how it is. is the ford 281 (4.6 liter) small block worth building up? I have the civilian model (2001) and I really want to keep the small block in it...
