What a great story, incredible car, and a wonderful man. My best friend doesn't have a Yenko, but he has a '67 Camaro, RS/SS convertible, w/350 cu, 4 wheel disc brakes, power top, power windows, cable driven bowtie side view mirror, hide away headlights, AM/FM, air conditioning, luggage rack on the trunk, blacked out rear panel, deluxe interior, actually he has two interiors, one has bucket seats in the front with a solid rear bench seat and he has the front split bench seat and fold down rear seat, it's red with the black bumble bee stripe around the nose with the double hump hood, automatic Turbo 400 transmission, he had it completely restored about 25 years ago and I don't think it has left his garage since he brought it home from the shop.
@454ss67

That blue 67 Camaro to the left, doing a burnout, is mine. I won a set of Mickey Thompson tires that year. It's Nantucket blue with a black vinyl top. And it looks a lot like the Yenko, but it's not a Yenko. It's not even a real SS. It was born a heavily optioned Rally Sport 327/PG/3.40 10 bolt open diff. Factory power windows, power steering, power drum brakes, tilt wheel, cruise control, 4 way speakers, pushbutton AM radio, deluxe Bright Blue interior. Yes, factory tilt and cruise in a 67 Camaro. I have never seen that in another Camaro over the last 42 years. I've seen power windows at a car show, but the guy said he added it. This Yenko and a GM exec personal car had power windows, but I've only seen those in pictures. I bought mine for $450 in 1978, and got teased, because a friend bought her '67 for only $100. Hers was just a plain Jane red Camaro, so I was happy with my score. I was also looking at a '70 Challenger with a 318, but it was overpriced at $1,800. Then there was a nice looking '69 Boss 302, red with black stripes, and those cool aluminum slats across the back window. He wanted $1,200. In retrospect, that was the car to get. A real Boss 302. But, I only had $600 in the bank, and the idea of not having to borrow money to buy a hot rod, the Camaro was mine! Keep in mind, it was only 12 years old in late '78, but it was already ragged out, so I can see why this Yenko was looking rough. The truth is, these cars were not made nearly as well as cars today. The sheet metal was thicker, but everything else was pretty poor quality compared to late model cars. My glove box was originally cardboard. The tail light panel was welded in crooked from the factory. Quality control, even in '66, wasn't that great. We had a 2010 2LT that looked nearly as good in 2020 as it did when new. Traded it a few months ago for something more practical...I really miss it. But I still have my 67! You don't see many Nantucket blue 67s, but it's my favorite color from the first year, so I resisted painting it any other color. It lost the power glide a few years after I got it. First I swapped in a Muncie 4 speed, which was relatively easy because all the attaching points and mounting bosses were already there. And back then the junk yards were still full of 1st gen Camaros, so all the necessary parts were easy to find. After I got tired of clutching, I installed a Turbo 400. That was a good, tough trans, but I wanted another 4 speed. Only this time it was an automatic overdrive, 700R4. Rebuilt to withstand drag racing, that's a nice trans for low end grunt, top end driving, and all around road trips. Speaking of drag racing, I couldn't live with the one wheel peel, so I found a 69 12 bolt posi and loaded 3.73s in it. Now I can lay down two nice thick racing stripes. The old 327 got tired by the mid '80s, so in went a 454. I ditched the 4 wheel drums for junkyard discs about 30 years ago, then finally upgraded to Wilwood discs in '16. The car finally stops as well as it goes. We lived in Vegas 25 years ago, so air conditioning became a necessity. Funny thing, when you get AC, you also get a real defroster. No more sticking my head out the window to see where I'm going. It's been a fun car. The paint is faded and chipped, and the vinyl top has seen better days. At a drag race a few years ago, the announcer said, here's a nice "surviver" Camaro. I had to laugh. Hardly a "surviver". It's been painted twice, had the top replaced, replaced the hood, a front fender, front bumper, interior, engine, trans, rear end, one of the headlight motors. I wouldn't say much has survived. Surprisingly, all four window motors are still original. So is the wiper motor, and the power steering pump. And I think that's about the only moving parts that have been there since 1967. But it still looks very stock, and far from fresh, so yeah, I guess after 53 years, it's a survivor.

I have to get my trophies from burnout contests because it's too street worn for car shows and too slow for drag racing, even though I do both! I love these old Camaros. They are beautiful from any angle. I'm very fortunate to have found mine when they were affordable. I couldn't justify getting one now. I guess the 3rd gens are taking that spot now. I have an '88 that I got for $700 about 20 years ago. It was my daily driver until a few years ago when it began just shutting off. Fuel injection is great, until it isn't. I have so many other projects that the 88 is just sitting there. Oops, I did I again. Really enjoyed the video.

We come to this world with nothing and leave with nothing. We don’t actually own a car, we are just the caretaker. This car will outlive the people who built it, and the guy who bought it new. He knew that. As a true steward of the car, he put his own “wants” aside for the good of those who follow behind him. Well done and kudos to all involved.

Fantastic, what a great Camaro. Love seeing a piece of history brought back to it's glory. I've owned a 1969 Camaro SS396 since 1985. Just waiting for time to restore to original. My car was a super stock car since July 1969 and has been raced on and off since. Still have the original odometer with 268 miles on it. This video has given me new inspiration to finally get around to finishing my car to it's previous glory. Thank you. And great work to all who where involved.👍 👏

Hopefully he got a fair price selling it! I grew up in SW PA and went to grade school with Don Yenko's daughter in the early 70's. She brought him in one day for Show and Tell, lol. He was in his race suit and showed an 8mm movie of one of his Trans Am races. As a 6th grader, he was just a local racer that owned a Dealership. Honestly, the Yenko Novas were more popular (affordable) than the Camaros. Pretty common sight in the Pittsburgh area in the 70's.

Thanks to this man for preserving the car, and eventually selling it to see it restored. I tried for MANY years to purchase a 68 Z28 from a guy in KY who just let it sit outside beside his barn. He always said “no, I’m going to do something with it”! I moved away for about 10 years, and when I moved back there was nothing left but a heap of rust, and glass panels, if you touched any panels that were still there they just compressed like pushing on a seat cushion. It was an original car with minor surface rust when I started trying to buy it, and this was in the early 90’s. Fast forward to today, and there’s a guy about 3 miles from me that let the exact same thing happen to a 69 Trans Am!

Great story and excellent ending for all involved! I had a 68 RS as my first car back in the mid 80. Cale Yarborough had had his guys down in NC restore it and later sold it. I kept it for many years and later sold it to a friend (for a song). I missed that car for years! Later I had tripped across a triple black 67 RS/SS 396 4 sp convertible at the end of my street, which the owner had just completed restoring. He needed money for his family and to hopefully open a shop of his own one day. I bought it for close to full asking price the day he put it on the street "for sale". Decades later, it's still sitting in my garage. About 2 years ago I was at the local gym talking to a younger guy which was a car enthusiast, I had been casual gym friends with him for years. I later learned I had been friends with his brother as well. He was asking me about all of my cars one day at the gym and when I mentioned the 67, he wanted to know more about it. As I rattled off the details about it, he said he and his father restored one very similar when he was a young kid. Turns out it was the same car, he had lots of fond memories of it. Come to find out his father took some of the money I gave him for the car and later did open his own shop about 5 miles away, which I had driven by many times. His father still has the shop and I have since visited to say hello. He has lots of fond memories too of the car, but was most concerned if I still had that "special" Holley Dominator carb on the car. I've never figured out what was so "special" about that carb, but I still get a chuckle out of the fact that he spent so much work restoring the car, yet he's still to this day concerned about the seemingly off the shelf non-OEM carb, LOL!

Great story and I can see the sentimental value that the original owner had here. The car reminds me of the 1971 GSS Dodge Demon that was ordered with a blue body, black vinyl top and the order form incorrectly was filled out for a red interior. It was built that way and an error but actually looked pretty cool.
