Beavers have made a remarkable comeback after over four centuries of commercial exploitation by the fur trade. They've done so well as to pose a problem in many Vermont towns where they sometimes block culverts and threaten to flood roads with their dams.
Those very same dams help prevent flooding, and create vital habitat for fish and other wildlife, especially birds! Beavers are the only other animal other than humans that alter their environment to suit their needs. Beavers also are centrally featured in many indigenous cultures from Canada and the US. Here we visit a beaver colony near our sanctuary that is also a corridor for other wildlife like coyote, fox and mink.
