Blacksmiths used to make a wide range of things and strangely enough Ink was one of them! Tannic acid from walnut husks or oak bark was cooked with iron scale to create iron tannate , a black dye used as ink.
Oak tanned leather was made using tannic acid from the bark, and the iron tannate was sometimes used to dye the leather black.
Tannic acid in bogs is also one of the reasons thousand year old swords are dug up relatively intact , as the tannins react with iron to make a corrosion resistant surface layer.
