A demo of a simplified shop form of a black phosphate finish for steel.
Phosphoric acid { one once} and cast iron turnings {a teaspoon} per quart of water. Boiled for a couple hours then washed and boiled in clean water. Dried and lightly oiled with linseed oil.
This only works on steel , and even stainless steel or higher alloy tool steels don't work well.
