The beauty is in the conviction. Those who are convinced, enjoyed. Those who aren't are inspired. I would say that not even my two eyes see the same scene in a tango. They see different. And I accepted it.

Thank you for your excellent review of the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 Heliar Classic. Your review convinced me to buy one for myself, and it is everything you described. I love this lens! But I have to disagree with you on a point or two. At f/1.5 and f/2 it is indeed dreamy, even more so in B&W, in my opinion. But stop it down to /f5.6 or better and it seems like a whole other lens. In spite of the single coating its contrast is excellent and sharpness is nothing short of biting from corner to corner. You don't suggest it for landscapes but I disagree with that. I find it excellent for landscapes stopped down. Buy the 50/1.5 Heliar Classic and you sort of get two lenses in one. I'd be interested to hear what others think. Again, thank you for another outstanding review. Don

This is a beautiful lens with beautiful soap bubble bokeh. For people who can afford it and want a brand new lens it makes a lot sense, but many are still going to look into vintage 50/1.4 lenses that are usually much cheaper and render similar bokeh, e.g, Canon LTM 50/1.4, or many 50/1.4 SLR lenses. I do wonder how the stopped down (f5.6-11) sharpness compares to vintage Planar/Biotar type of lenses. You did mention Summicron but I assume you meant Summicron ASPH.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As for the bokeh, this looks too busy to my eyes, making me kind of dizzy. But I would buy this lens just for it looks and build quality.

The bokeh achieved by this 50mm at 1.5 is looking good. However, the subject to background distance ratio is equally important as is the quality of the background light. The Nikon 105mm1.4e creates the most amazing bokeh even when the subject is at a distance.

Beautiful images and rendering. I have the Nokton Classic 35mm 1.4 in SC. Prefer it over the MC lenses in their range. Was considering this or the Nokton 50 1.4. I think you have convinced me for this

Your pics remind me a lot of the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AI-S wide open (glow all over + bubbles, swirl, and sometimes a little too busy bokeh). For mirrorless, this Heliar has a clear size advantage + you can use it on M bodies. Wonder how the rendition differs between this and the Voigt 35mm f/1.4 II SC?

I have to say I am not entirely convinced by the lens you are reviewing. Some pictures look amazing, I love the bokeh at 4:54, but some of the other subjects do not lend themselves to what I percieve as the strengths of bubble bokeh lenses. I am also not sure why I should not use a vintage lens instead. You are absolutely right though, when it comes to character vs perfection. I have a Sony GM 50 1.2 and a Takumar 50 1.4, and the later just has a MUCH more interesting bokeh. The GM is great for capturing fast motion, but if I have time to focus manually, the Takumar is often the lens of choice. What I am convinced of, on the other hand, is the quality of your talking head shot. Beautifully lit and graded. Is this truly the Sony 20 1.8? On a sony full frame body? If so, I am much more inclined to get that one. You would do me a favour if you could answer this question.

There would be no point really. Totally different lenses. The 50 Lux ASPH will deliver very sharp subject with a smooth creamy background like most traditional 50 1.4 lenses. This Heliar lens is a special effects type of lens, a character and beauty lens. Totally different kind of lens. This lens replicates the look of some lenses from the 30's. 40's. etc. The Lux ASPH is a modern day kind of lens. I've reviewed the 50 Lux on a few occasions and it is closest to the Voigtlander 50 1.5 Nokton. Some links below with samples. Thank you. I don't own a Leica noct (too expensive) but for me I find the bokeh on this voigtlander is messy and not rendering well at all... therefor not dreamy like f.e. the 10 year old fuji 35mm 1.4 or the voigtlander 50mm m mount. Just taste 😁

To be honest, comparing all the specs and watching the pics, I rather promote the Samyang 50mm F1.2 for APS-C which is not just cheaper, but produces way more beautiful bokeh and sharper pictures. I think we should re-evaluate our traditional adherence to standard brands, such as Leica and Voigtlaender etc. (I have been photographing since 1979), which have been, and to some extend still are, amazing, but these days relay more on their historical anecdotal testimonies rather than competing on a quality and economical basis with the much smaller companies such as Samyang, Sigma, Tamron etc., which produce even better lenses.....What do you think?
@HiFiHuff
3 жыл бұрын
Not everyone uses APS-C (I do not) and this is a full frame lens on a full frame body. It can even be used on a Hasselblad 907X (which I may share soon). Full frame bodies are not made for APS-C lenses. I have seen the Samyang 50 1.2 - Beautful lens for APS-C but more of a traditional type of lens rather than a Character lens such as this. You will not get this soap bubble bokeh with the Samyang nor will you get the retro vibe and glow which is what this lens is designed for. People who buy this lens do so for the distinct look it gives. At the end of the day though the Samyang is not a good lens for full frame ; ) This lens is about its unique character. If a more traditional bokeh is sought after the Voigtlander 50 1.5 Nokton rivals the Leica Summilux for 1/5 the cost and it is full frame. There are tons of 50mm lenses that can do the smooth bokeh and sharp subject look and many of them are inexpensive. None will give the look of this Heliar though, and that look is what this lens is about. Being different from the rest. Thank you.
