Another fantastic review. I like the idea of pairing it with an APO for clinical perfection and character. On that theme, I’d love to see you review a Voigtlander 75 f1.5, it is like two lenses in one, low contrast at f1.5 thar is somehow soft and sharp, then clinical by f2.8. It was your review of the Voigtlander 21mm f1.8 that got me hooked on these interesting lenses.

I agree. My 50/1.5 Heliar is like having two different lenses in one. Wide open it is truly dreamy and if you make use of that it is unique for a modern lens. Stop down to f/5.6 to f/11 and it is very sharp, but not overly contrasty. We buy vintage lenses for such characteristics but then have to deal with all the crap that vintage lenses bring with them, fog, fungus, haze, oily blades, scratches in coatings, etc. but we buy them anyway.🥺

that`s an awesome review just talking about qualities a buyer of that kind of gear is into - rather than comparing it to the Sony GM series. Impressive collection of 50mms m-mounts. One of the best comparison presentation I've ever seen in such a brief way, that really showed a difference. Amazing!

I shoot with a Leica 50mm Summicron V1 (collapsable) on my M3. Definitely gives it that creamy, hazy, low contrast vibes. If you want that feel, that's an option too. They usually aren't super expensive. I don't shoot it by choice, really, it's just the lens I got with the camera when I bought it. I pretty much stick to shooting B&W film and avoid backlit situations. I don't really understand why someone would want that hassle, but hey, go for it. Haha.

This vid got me to subscribe. Good stuff man. Question for ya… when you demo the aperture with video, is that with the lens on your EOS R? I’m currently using my voigtlander glass on an R, myself. Wondering your thoughts on using these lenses on that cam. I’m still relatively new to the game and I’m curious what sort of magic I’m missing out on with not having it on a Leica. Especially given that I’m more interested in imperfection characteristics.

Hi, I shoot with a Leica SL type 601 which is similar to your camera. I often use adapted M Mount Voigtlander lenses and technically unless you are using ultra wide lenses I very much doubt that a Voigtlander lens would perform any differently on a Canon body. The only difference with the Leica sensors is a thinner protective filter layer on the front which can help ultra wide angle lenses perform better. However while I love my Voigtlander lenses, especially my 75mm f1.5… utterly amazing, I also love adapting vintage lenses. The best I have tried is the utterly incredible Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f1.8 mk2 multi coated. Incredibly sharp wide open but with characterful bokeh, and less than 200 dollars US for a mint one. That said I have picked up mint boxed 50mm lenses from the 70s and 80s for £40 and even been given a couple. All great fun with their own character

@mvonwalter6927

That’s a great setup! The LTM Nokton is very good. It’s a nice marriage of modern and classic since it’s a simple planar formula like this lens being reviewed but also has an aspherical element. It’s going to be pretty similar but less glowy and better edge to edge sharpness early on stopping down.

All of the Voigtlander Classic lenses will be a copy of a vintage sonnar/planar design, probably a variation of a double Gauss which is going to have that crispy busy bubbly bokeh from the olden days. I for one am really happy there is literally ONE single company that still makes lenses like that. Everyone else has gone the smooth-creamy way which I personally dislike in my shots.

@@KNURKonesur oh don’t get me wrong, I’m also a huge fan of CV and their classic line. I switch between a Sonnar and v2 Lux and also enjoy the pre asph 35 Lux. Fantastic lenses with character. I took some indoor photos at my friends wedding with the 35 pre asph last week on the m246 and his wife was asking how I got her skin to glow :). Ladies love it. I just found the background a hair too busy for my taste on the heliar. I still might grab one used sometime if there’s a good deal because like Benj says…it’s like having 2 in one lens sorta like the Sonnar

The bokeh is ALMOST really nice. It's that half-step between the boring and bland modern clarity and smoothness vs the oldschool vintage bokehBALLSY-ness. I'd still go for a Canon 50/1.2LTM if I didn't want to sell a kidney to get a Canon 50/0.95LTM or a Noctilux 50/1.0 (I'm deliberately mentioning the 1.0 cause the modern 0.95 ones are bland and boring)
