Glad to see the Bigelow Aerospace modules being resurrected, I was always hoping to see the B330 actually get into space and was really sad to see them close up a couple years ago. There was a time I actually thought about going to work for Bigelow in Vegas because my daughter's family was living there at the time and I was a manufacturing engineer working in aerospace already but passed on their offer 3 months before the layoffs hit.

ISS lifespan is over extended. It is going to be decommissioned soon and there are no plans for anything after it. Start praying super heavy is ready in time. Or astronauts will be sleeping on tiangong. Also someone tell siera space there is no gravity in space so they dont need floors. Ropes/bars for maneuvering and attaching is enough. Also all their modules are based on old rocket tech hope they are doing the r&d for up sizing them

I wonder if you could add a layer of glass fibre matting to the structure in such a way that if you injected the glass fibre layer with resin, it would spread evenly in between two pressure layers (outer constraint layer, inner pressure bladder)? Epoxy resins are able to become effective radiation shields, and glass reinforced plastic would make for a nice solid surface to mount equipment to thus you get one layer that serves three or four functions since it would presumably also act as a physical shield against space debris and as a backup gas tight layer.

Would it make sense to only use the Life pod to store waste, bulk consumables, and infrequently needed tools and repair parts, for a year or two, in order to demonstrate its safety and reliability in space, before allowing it to be used as a habitat and workspace?

Inflatable space habituates have been around for a long time. Since 2016, there has been a miniature one installed on the ISS called the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) . It is more than about time they are used in orbit. In that NASA chose not to use them for their Lunar Gateway I believe is a mistake limiting its viability for the long term.
@PiDsPagePrototypes

NASA developed the concept and design a long time ago, then Bigelow licesed the technology to develop it for flights, but folded before they could contribute to Lunar Gateway. So when Gate way was announced, there was no company albe to provide this technology for it. Now Sierra is getting stuck in to it, there's every possibility of getting a decent size module in to space, for uses such as expanded living areas, or massive orbital fuel depots, or expanded in to vertical tunnels and buried with regolith on Luna and Mars.

Kudos to Sierra Space but this type of narration drives me up the wall because I know how much better it could be. Instead of using a sing-song delivery with frequent and totally unnecessary high notes, the narrator should speak as if addressing 3 or 4 of his friends or maybe his mom.

The ISS partners really need to add a full sized inflatable crew space to the station. BEAM proved that it would be safe, but adding something like this would really prove out a habitat like this for the future stations. Realistically the ISS is the only place where this can happen.

This is really cool but one potential downside of these big modules is that you lose the ability to seal small areas with problems. On a ISS sized station, If one module fails you lose 1/3 of your station. Lots of individual pressure vessels provide redundancy and safety. Other than that “build it stronger” I don’t know how you can provide that emergency triage ability.

The only thing I can see that they really have to test the heck out of is how is its lifetime affected by space radiation. It seems like a really good idea. Too bad that Bigelow decided to disband, since they had ALREADY tested their modules in space and at the ISS. Couple this habitat design with the latest research with polyethylene radiation shielding and we could have a pretty safe design for the transit to Mars too. Sierra Space seems like one of the best run companies in the new space group. I hope NASA widens its use of Sierra's spacecraft and systems. They are definitely outpacing the old space company of Boeing of late. Unless Boeing improves their engineering management, their government contracts are going to start going away. Penny wise, pound foolish, bean counters are lousy managers.

The problem I have with this design is the non partitioned nature of the habitat. One hole from a micrometorite and the whole habitat will explosives decompress killing all aboard. Surely there is a better way to design this.

The interiors of such habitats cannot be filled with equipment and living quarters and other things that are not permanently affixed to its interior. Everything inside must be tethered or fixed, such as it will not float in a microgravity environment.Tables, chairs, personal items, etc. They must also be much more durable and functional than existing ISS. The interior of the ISS has been a disaster for some time.

I want to see one inflated to normal space operating pressure and then shot with a rail gun (Mach 6+) with an average size metioriod projectile (lets say a 1/4-20 stainless steel sized nut). Will the space habitate explode? Will the projectile penitrate trough and through? Will the habitat self seal. How long will it take for the enviroment in the habitat to become untenable and not be able to support life. Will the crew have time to reach an escape pod or safety area?
