I’ve also run the beta 91a as an inner and an AKG D112 on outter right in the whole on the front. If I don’t use an outter. Might use that mic for the bass cab. Depending on the room and if I’m running 2 18in subs or 4 of them. So many factors. But typically run the 91a and beater mic. Then on bass I will run a DI box to the bass and the other bass channel runs in the guys SVT-PRO 7 amp

I use 2 mics. 91A for attack and 52A to grab the punch and sub bass frequencies. Sometimes I filter the outer mic to only grab frequencies around 40hz-100hz.

I do effectively the same, but I only use the 91 now and I use a gated Sine-Wave generator for the sub bass (56Hz) so the low end is the same every time regardless of bass drum tuning, then it's a blend from about 100-140, then above 140 it's all the 91. It's a similar concept but with one less mic to carry, one less input, and you don't have to crawl around on your hands and knees placing a bass drum mic as the 91 is internally mounted! And the XLR jack is run through the air hole in the shell to the outside. So you just "plug in the kick drum" and you're off to the races!

We use the beta 91a as our kick drum mic and the rest of the drums use beta 98s. Then a sm81 for the hi-hat and Soemtimes will use another sm81 as an overhead. Depends on the room and if the gig is the 3rd night in a row and the drummer isn’t hitting the symbols like he should be lmao

SM57s are amazing, everyone knows that, but it cannot be said enough. For every situation, there are better mics than SM57, that being said an SM57 works in EVERY situation pretty well (as you mentioned). I carry 3 SM57s even though I don't use any of them in my normal input list, but they have saved my ass 3 different times this year alone. One thing you mentioned about not needing a stand for the 91, I use a 52 most of the time and I don't use a stand for that either, I just reach in to the bass drum and lay it on the pillow/blanket whatever pointed more or less toward the beater. The threads on the actual Mic stripped out on me, so it's what I had to do for one gig, and since then I've never done anything else! Necessity is the mother of invention, lol.

We just lay our beta 91a on the blanket inside the kick drum. Right in the middle. We also run a vocal mic on the beater side where the beater is hitting the kick drum. So we get the best of both worlds.

@@jessemilstead810 Do you not run in to phase issues? In a live situation I just cannot trust that stuff won't get knocked around or moved and then you've got a mess. It's too dynamic of a situation. I've moved to using the 91 and a gated 56Hz sine-wave generator (built in on the M32/X32 consoles) for the low end in the Subs. It works outrageously well actually. I'm using the 91 like a pseudo trigger for the low end, and then the definition and dynamics of everything above 140Hz(ish) that you hear is the mic. It's suspended via bungee straps and then the XLR input is run through the air hole in the shell so you just "plug in the kick drum" you don't have to fumble around on your hands and knees placing a mic, you just run the Drum Snake over *click* and you're ready to rock. Also you don't have to care about bass drum tuning virtually at all then either because the low end is coming from the Sine wave not the drum, so it's that almost unattainably low thump that we're all looking for, and it's there every time if it's a dry room like we played last night at 0°F or 100+ out in the sun for a summer festival, the sound is identical.

@@djjazzyjeff1232 no the drums are always on a riser that’s 3ft in the air.. just set the beta 91 in there thru front port hole. Vocal mic on the backside of kick drum gets the snappiness from the beater. We run 3 channel columns and 18in subs so the beta 91 is only going thru the subs and the beater mic goes thru the columns

@@djjazzyjeff1232 I also have a good way of basically suspending the vocal mic on the backside in the air so it’s not on a stand or anything. Mount it away from the petals and a couple inches from the where the beaters hit the drum. It actually works really great ! I also have my subs on a fader themselves so there not tuned up a crazy amount. Only the kick drum and a certain bass lines come thru the 18in subs. The rest of the bass come thru the sub in the 3 channel columns

Any tips for miking a kick with no hole? Drummer has a special kit he doesn't want to change the head on or cut a hole. We have a 52A and it's been ok, but I'd be happy to hear any ideas

I like the Shure 52. In that case I'd place the mic a couple inches in front of the kick, not centered on the head. Probably about 2/3s from the outside edge toward the center. Move mic along the radius until you get the best sound, if your initial results aren't to your liking.

Thank you! Every mic has it's own flavor, and opinions regarding which ones are best are subjective. I've had very positive results from Shure mics, I also like Beyerdynamic however the popularity of Shure is a consideration of value for me. Many people like Sennheiser mics, I think they are a quality product, but I feel that many of them have a coloration just doesn't fit in the style of mix I'm trying to deliver, or they make getting the mix I want more difficult.. Your experience may differ from mine.

Hello Barry can you help I've been used a shure beta 91a and I'm finding it quite clicky. Is it better to move the mic more towards the resonance head away from the beater or just eq it out. Thanks Warren
@Barry-Watson
2 жыл бұрын
My approach is almost always to try to fix it at the source as much as possible. I'd move the mic toward the resonant head, and try to work with the drummer to mellow the attack sound - more padding in the drum, maybe swap out the beater with one that's a little bit softer, or tape a pad to where the beater hits. Make sure the drum tuning is how you want it. Once I've done that, then I'd start adjusting EQ. Maybe a mic like the Shure 52 would work better for you, but I've had good results from the 91. How does the drum sound naturally, acoustically? I'd try to get that right first, then amplifying that good sound should be something you can achieve.

Thank you for the rundown of the different choices, and more importantly, your preference for them. I recently saw a video with different samples of different mics, and I did like the Beta 91A the best. I agree with you that the D6 doesn't sound natural, so that is why I liked the 91A. I would be curious about your opinion regarding the video I mentioned above, if you want to review it: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tJ-VroewaaOQiJw
