@Josh C. I usually run spell heavy, creature light decks... when I run the opposite my "counters" are usually things like Boros Charm, Teferi's protection, or Heroic Intervention... If a spell doesn't stop me from winning or win the game for them I'll let it resolve. I run a lot of counters but I like to let people play. I try to run exclusively instant speed interaction too so I don't have to spend it unless the threats are literally aimed at me. You do have a point though... when it has to happen I try to gain some favor as a result

My favorite way to work politics is the “nothing to see here” method. People know I play a lot of budget decks so it’s pretty easy to get them to believe that I have nothing going on, so they pretty much leave me alone, until I just dump my whole hand on the board and start taking people out one by one. It’s pretty fun.

I've developed a reputation like Beezy, to the point that I've been nicknamed Wormtongue because of how often I politick. I think one part that might have been overlooked is how often the best deals make it seem like the person accepting gets something close to an equal deal. Too much to them and it makes them suspicious while souring the others towards you. Too much to you and they'll likely call the bluff, because you look like you're taking advantage of them. It's my favorite part of the format.

Fun sub-game: Humble Defector Hot Potato. Basically, you pass Humble Defector with the agreement that everyone uses it it ASAP on their next turn, and passes it to the next player in turn order, so that everyone gets a card. As soon as someone breaks that agreement, everyone alpha strikes them. Or you just make an agreement to do this except skipping the Archenemy.

The most important thing I've found with making deals is you have to be really specific and often a little pedantic about defining them, if you say "I'll do x and you won't attack me" that could mean anything from them not attacking you with a single creature next turn, to them not attacking you with anything for the rest of the game, so you have to be specific. If you aren't you can easily get into huge argument over what exactly you agreed to and for how long, also if you be super pedantic you get huge advantage out of hidden information, like agreeing to not attack someone for this turn, and then playing a time walk. This last bit can anger people, but my play group understands this and treats deals as almost like another mechanic in the game you have to manage.

I tend to ask „what are you planning to do with it?“. It works with spells or right before opponents moving to attackers. You signal you have an answer and often times gain a little bit. They might not target or attack you or you get a bit of infomation what the opponent sees as a threat. You also leave a way out for yourself („killing my creature? Nah, thats fine“). And when it works you still save your answer. You can use this to bluff, too. But do not do this to often.

The easiest common enemy scenario IMO is if you play e.g. a graveyard deck, and somebody else also plays one. Then a player drops smth like Rest in peace. It is gonna be pretty easy to convince the other gy player to buddy up with you, because neither of you is gonna be playing the game if the permanent or person sticks around. Lots of other examples like that are possible. Although most likely, the other 2 players will also team up, so this could also be an alliance scenario

Politics can also build a great foundation for your reputation as a player. For example, I run the most removal/interaction of anyone in my playgroup. So I often ask for favors if I get rid of something problematic. If people start to refuse me, I will let someone win the game with a card even if I have the answer, just because in the future it will make it more likely for them to agree to whatever I say when stopping an Avengers-level threat

So I made a zombie deck. It just a giant snowball. It not a threat persay each turn but it really starts with a 2/2 zombie token. It the first deck I have made or played against where every turn you need to kill any zombie. Otherwise it just slowly every turn becomes bigger and bigger snowball aka threat. It so bad that every time I play it the other three players spend resource making sure I have no zombies. The best politicking of this deck is knowing I am the arch enemy. It so bad I had to put in my own board wipe for a win condition. Folks literally won't wipe the board unless they have a way to empty my graveyard. Because the way I built it is board wipes are good for me along with removal and mill. It makes politics hilarious. Because usually the other three players argue weather it better to keep my board clear in the grave yard or on the table.

Threat assessment is always a big issue at my group for some reason. I'll try to point out problems and other people will be like "why you stirring the pot" and target me for spite or something alot of the time. A short while ago I was playing a game and the 5 color enchantress player in our group dropped a turn 4 sanctum of all. I pointed out that that is an absolute game ender if it can't be answered. The resident Naya player let it be known that he had a Naturalize, but was more concerned about the Trespasser's Curse that I had placed on him even though I had my commander Lynde already on the battlefield. I tried to explain that Sanctum would outright win him the game if unanswered because several Shrines hit critical mass really fast. He took a full turn cycle to think about it and then blew up the Curse on his own turn, which was immediately returned and given back to him on my turn. Something he knew would happen. Enchantress player took the game away without much resistance as my Curse deck takes time to attrition people that I wouldn't have with the Shrine clock and the Naya player was still trying to be "fair" and attack both of us, but mostly me as the enchantress player got a God down as a blocker so my blockers were technically weaker. I mocked him for his garbage threat assessment the entire game and pointed out his stupid decision making every chance I could. Petty and toxic? Sure. Justified? Felt like it.

@ThoseKidsAreEPIC
2 жыл бұрын
@@bigaloobooberry3461 I put that specific Curse back on the Naya player simply cause the Enchantress player doesn't really run too many creatures in his deck, it's mostly designed to drop big game ender/game grinding combos he found on reddit, and the Naya player was using a Bruse Tarl/Kamahl Exert deck I had made for him a year or 2 ago so I needed it on him to get value out of it. All the rest of my attention I was trying to focus on slowing the Enchantress player, but again with a hyper aggro Exert deck trying to be "fair" early and keeps attacking me, and then even later as the threats are properly assessed but Echantress player now has indestructible Gods as defenders he continued to attack into me because "what else is he gonna do" mentality. So I didn't have a choice but to keep putting resources towards getting the Naya player to leave me alone and removing his haymakers so they didn't trample me to death.
