What was life really like for soldiers during the Civil War? To find out, my father and I, along with two fellow teachers, embarked on a challenging history hike through Devil’s Den State Park in Arkansas. Dressed in the wool uniforms and carrying the gear of Civil War soldiers, we set out to experience firsthand the hardships faced by those who fought over 150 years ago.
In this video, I share the eye-opening journey of our trek-struggling under the weight of our packs, battling dehydration, and pitching camp with only the most basic of supplies. As we hiked through the beautiful but demanding Ozark National Forest, the difference between modern hiking gear and the crude equipment of the past became starkly clear. From cooking salt pork over an open fire to sleeping under the stars in a flimsy shelter tent, we experienced just a fraction of the daily struggles of Civil War soldiers.
Join us on this unique journey as we connect with history in a deeply personal way, walking in the footsteps of our ancestors and reflecting on how much has changed-and what has been lost-since those tumultuous times. This hike was more than just a physical challenge; it was an opportunity to peel back the layers of time and live, if only for a moment, in another era.
