Hi , thank you so much for the video . I’ve noticed that you focused on the fact that the Carboxylic acid group has a carbon atom twice in the video and it looked like it’s an important point . Is there any specific importance for this carbon atom ?
@biologycarol
3 жыл бұрын
No - just that you're able to draw an amino acid correctly. Many students forget that the carboxylic acid group has its 'own' carbon, as well as the central carbon that the 4 groups 'hang off' of (amino, H, R and carboxylic acid). Hope that helps x

Hi Aneesa, Yes, its on my website😬. I'm getting very close to completing the AQA A level biology course at www.biologycarol.co.uk. I know I've already told you about it so I won't bore you again, but if you click on either the Year 1 (AS) playlist bundle www.biologycarol.co.uk/p/year-1-a-level-as-biology-bundle or the Year 1 and 2 playlist bundle www.biologycarol.co.uk/p/year-1-and-year-2-a-level-biology there'll be charts showing you EXACTLY what parts of the syllabus have been covered in my videos. I hope that helps...

what about the difference between globular and fibrous proteins??
@biologycarol
4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I thought I had included something on this in the video but maybe not! Globular proteins are basically spherical proteins which are often soluble because hydrophilic (polar) R groups are located on the outside of the protein and hydrophobic (non-polar) R groups are located on the inside. This solubility makes them easily transported in fluids like cytoplasm, blood, tissue fluid, those found in xylem and phloem. These proteins often have transport functions e.g. haemoglobin, are enzymes e.g. amylase or are hormones e.g. insulin and oestrogen. Fibrous proteins on the other hand are rope-shaped and because of their insolubility and strength, are structural in function i.e. they hold things together or give things shape. The OCR syllabus needs you to know about 3 specific structural proteins: Collagen in connective tissues in skin, bone and muscle, which holds cells together. (break down of collagen in older age causes wrinkles which is why people have collagen implants!) Keratin, found in skin, nails, horns and feathers - it is flexible (in skin) or hard (nails, horns) and Elastin which stretches and recoils back to its original shape/size. Found in skin, lungs, blood vessels (not capillaries though). Hope that helps!

You go way too fast. Can you please slow down your speed?
@biologycarol
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that feedback- much appreciated. It’s a really tricky balance to get the pace right in these videos and I do tend to err on the side of being pacy and efficient in the teaching do that students don’t get bored. Obvs you can slow down the video a bit which might help, though my voice will get a little lower😂. That might give you enough time to process stuff more easily. Otherwise, I rely on students repeating stuff that they haven’t quite got as I think I’m including everything you need to understand and hopefully not too much more (see boredom comment above, again!).
