I agree Darryl, a round-a-bout for SH1/SH57 is crazy. It should have a grade separated interchange like the one planned for east of Levin. There are so few entry/exit points planned for this expressway it wouldn't kill them to have one for the only state highway (57) branching off from SH1.

Agreed on the roundabout at SH1/57. The whole point of this is to keep SH1 traffic moving by taking it around cities. Why slow it down again with a roundabout.

That SH-57 / SH-1 Junction (proposed Roundabout) reminds me of the SH-1 / SH-5 "Napier-Taupo Road" Round-about at Taupo.

Yeah, perhaps the traffic at the 1/57 round about is not as much as I think it is. But sometimes the traffic through Levin is a large amount, especially on long weekends and holidays.

@@SnowAndrews Yeah, but it is embarrassing to build a new highway that has a feature that causes a massive traffic jam on the first holiday weekend. I always look at the top of the Kapiti expressway every long weekend. But that will be much better when the Otaki expressway is open.

What really needs to be done is to close the gap between Piarere in Waikato where the proposed Waikato Expressway extension from Cambridge is to end at, and north of Levin via Vinegar Hill and Palmerston North.

The SH57 intersection should have been a grade-separated intersection, so traffic north to Foxton can continue without interruption

Ii don't know about the round - about, peak hour traffic morning and evening is going to cause a few problems, what is the speed going to be on the new motor way, I wouldn't want to be t - boned at the round about, that is a long stretch of fast driving heading north, will be interesting to see the final build, just some thoughts, thanks for the video

Thanks for the informed commentary Daryl, your local knowledge is great. I'm hanging out for the completion of Pekepeka - Otaki and it's adjacent bike trail, hopefully before this summer! As for Otaki - Levin, the narrow dangerous section around Manukau is pretty tense, especially when towing a caravan, so the proposed new bypass will be massive.

Yes, the cycle tail will be awesome. Also, the a new road to avoid those curvy bridges will be a huge safety improvement.

Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, sometimes I need to just think through it for myself to properly understand it. The fly thought are good, but I need an explanation of the reasons for the design.

I agree with you they should build a bridge then a Roundabout at them intersections on state highway 1 and the highway going to Palmerston North

Yeah, I hope this is just a preliminary. Once the road from Wellington to Levin is better, more people will drive to Palmerston North. Induced demand. There are a couple of places I go to in East Porirua, because the road is way better now.

Plenty of state highway intersections use a roundabouts, and past Levin, the traffic levels do not justify an express way. Even arguably before Levin the traffic levels are too low, but the main advantage is moving the traffic out of the center of Levin. The roundabouts work just fine and they are much cheaper than an interchange. Also the traffic does cross over, it just does it in the center of Levin instead.

Just do a Y split interchange the same as transmission gully heading north from tawa and the Y split interchange from wellington to ngaranga gorge and the hutt costal motorway. North of levin and this expressway will be constructed along the tansformer power line fields east of levin. To far east and theres more houses and tararua ranges with forest to far weat and thats levin suburbs. Want to be centre east for the Y split interchange to conect SH1 and SH58.
@DarrylTalks

Yeah, there is some kind of plan to build a suburb in the foothills, something like that. Which will be on the other side of the highway. The road to Palmerston North needs a flyover, like your Y split idea, but there is quite a bit of traffic to Palmerston North along SH57, which is to Levin, crossing the highway.

Great Video Darryl, this is of great interest to me because in my old job as a "Rural Banker" I had a number of customers affected, some directly and some indirectly. I still believe the route further east of the current route was a better option because it affected less houses and less high value soils, albeit the construction cost was higher because of the more challenging terrain, from memory is was the line that the old double power line followed which goes from shannon and the hutt, so your a Ohau boy? village or Rural interesting! thanks for sharing

When I was a kid, I lived in a street where this new road will cut across. Yeah, I think the route closer to the hills would be pretty awesome. Sure, the cost will be a bit annoying. But people seriously underestimate the cost of ruining high value silt loam soils. Look at the Hutt Valley, half of that housing development should be unrolled to revert to crop growing, the valley floor would be naturally fertilised by flooding, but that would be a big project.

I don't think a date has been announced. They are still uncertain about the details. But I will guess, that after the segment that runs to the top of Ōtaki is done. They will start the next part. It would seem silly to let the talent go, and then start the project.

Waka Kotahi translates as "travelling together as one", it's a poetic/metaphorical kind of thing. I think it makes sense that the expressway section of state highway 1 should end with a roundabout as they serve as a good way to remind drivers that the expressway standard section has finished. However if there is a lot of traffic (I'm not familar with the area) between Levin and Palmy North I do see how that might be an issue, maybe a partial cloverleaf would be better at the SH1/SH57 intersection. I think the roundabout at the end of the project is appropriate though, the last time I checked traffic figures long distance SH1 traffic was rather low so I think a roundabout will do there.
