The late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was the band's 'classical music guy'... and taught the band a lot from his music schooling. He taught James Hetfield everything about melodies and drummer Lars Ulrich about song arrangements... After his death in 1986, Metallica did not revisit the instrumental format much after 1988 (They honored Cliff Burton w/ a epic instrumental 'To live is to die' w/ a spoken word piece... but nothing else, apart from the track 'S+++ide and redemption' in 2008) Cliff Burton played a huge part in arranging 'Orion' and his bass was more prominent on the track... The strange part is that the track had a slow section that was kind of sad... like they were drifting away in outer space and it was almost as if Burton was saying goodbye because he had an inkling that he would not be around much longer... He was killed in 1986 at age 24 in a tour bus accident just after the release of Metallica's 3rd album 'Master of Puppets'. Cliff Burton's sister Connie recalled them growing up together and Cliff would do the oddest thing - every morning, he would wake up and put on Bill Graham Ministries and would often repeat the Biblical line of "the Kingdom of salvation"... When she asked him what that was about, he told her he found the sermons intriguing (even though he was apparently not a church-goer or religious) ... Connie got into drugs and her brother's death made her addictions even worse... Thankfully, Connie was able to recover and live to this day.

There was a great interview with Ray Burton, and he talks a little about this track. Jan & Ray always showed their support of Cliff, but made a joke that all his music left them nothing to waltz to. Cliff took his appreciation and classical training to devise this magical piece of music history. This where you finally got to hear Cliff really shine. It's a joyous ride through the Cosmos. Master of Puppets is an absolutely flawless album. There’s not a single note that I’d change. There’ll never be anything like it again and it’s staggering that it was made by a bunch of guys that were between 21 and 23 years old. The maturity of the songwriting is far beyond the years of the band members. Pretty sure I’m going to stipulate that Orion is played a my funeral. It encapsulates everything that I love about heavy metal.

35 years ago, my older sister gave me a cassette for Christmas. It was this album. I was 7, and this became my favorite album played until the tape literally wore out. This quickly became my favorite track off the entire album. The tape, though broken, still resides in my safe, along with the tag that accompanied it. With the script that said take care of this, you'll need it later. She was 💯 and it became my reason to learn bass at 11. I can't understate how important this song and album was to me over the years. As a side note on the writing for this bass line, the interlude was very much based on Greensleeves and tudor music in general. The guitar coming in is very blues/jazz inspired, elevating the entire feel from somewhat somber to laid back and relaxed. They made this song to take you on a trip. They succeeded. Sorry for the length of the post.

Back when MOP came out, I was a senior in H.S. I learned the whole album on guitar and Orion has been my favorite Metallica song ever since. I still love to jam this tune with friends. This, to me, is Metallica's masterpiece. They are modern masters on the level of the classical greats. Orion, above all, displays their virtuosity to the point that there is no question.

This bass line at the beginning of interlude started my love for bass guitar. After hearing "Orion" for the first time I decided to start playing bass (which helped me fight depression and s&^#^dal thoughts) and the bassline of this song was one of the first basslines I learned. I still have a soft spot for this song, for the reason mentioned above, and also because it was Cliff Burton's last work. R.I.P Cliff

I love looking and seeing the love for music in your eyes. I wonder if you noticed (although it's difficult) that the bass solo at 9 minutes and 10 seconds of your film is played on the bass? You can notice the band took a different direction when it came to the and justice for all album after cliff was no longer with us. Check out anesthesia/pulling teeth. Cliff Burton's bass solo, it was on the original kill em All album. Also you'll notice a lot of Dave mustaine's influence on that album because he was once the lead guitarist of Metallica way back in the day.
