This summer, The Wife (@secretsbymisslisa) and I decided our summer vacation would take the form of a road trip out west--a tiki road trip, in which we would visit as many tikiesque landmarks between Texas and the Pacific Ocean as possible. Mind you, it was a vacation, so I didn't have the cameras running at every stop along the way. But we pulled them out for a few locations to share with you good viewers.
First up is the legendary Oceanic Arts in Whittier, California. Founded in 1956 by LeRoy Schmaltz and Bob Van Oosting, “The World’s Largest Supplier of Tropical and Polynesian Décor” has outlasted all of its competition, including Sea & Jungle and Orchids of Hawaii, to become an iconic landmark of the 21st Century tiki community. They do a brisk mail-order business, but to fully experience the greatness that is Oceanic Arts, one must visit their showroom/warehouse. During my visit I saw more amazing carvings, lamps, tapa cloths, tiki mugs, ceremonial shields and other tropical decor items than I'd ever thought possible. Whilst I was walking around with my mouth hanging open like some rural rube who'd just taken a tumble off the proverbial turnip truck, Bob Van Oosting repeatedly apologized for some large orders they'd recently fulfilled, which "left the place pretty empty." He assured me that they normally had much more decor in stock, but they hadn't gotten their resupply shipments yet. Which, I'm sure you can imagine, thoroughly melted my overloaded brain.
