In an era of "agony of choice" it's hilarious how easy a choice it was to watch this video. Kicked back, had breakfast and put this on -- all the while having absolutely zero indecision about doing so, because that's how much I look forward to these. Once they're up, that's what I'm watching. This was amazing!! It's so weird seeing my channel name at the end but I love it. As usual, this is superb. Only missed opportunity was for Dr. Strangelove during "FLUIDS" XD And that's really saying something when the ONLY chance missed was for a Jack D. Ripper meme. I LOVE THAT LAOWA FINALLY GOT YOUR TREATMENT. For my money, they're today's equivalent of what Nikon or Kinoptik were up to in the old days. And I especially love how you didn't go easy on them, either! You're the only guy that would use this to educate Laowa's customers and us about the history of probe glass, and even flag where the OG's were better. Most people watching this I bet have no idea. I know that I didn't. Danke schoen for that & for keeping it up at this level. Oh, and this is also the best mini-doc on submarine miniature work in film I think I've ever seen. PS: Wolfgang would have been VERY proud, haze notwithstanding. :) Cheers from LA - Soren
@MediaDivision

Thanks a lot for your kindness and your support Soren… very much appreciated!! The team and I salute you - it is people like you that we do this for. Companies like LAOWA and DZO are pushing the envelope by being more flexible and experimental than the classic European and Japanese brands. After a 50+ years in the business, companies tend to freeze up a bit. I aplaude them for the fresh wind the bring. I think we where very positive about the Pro2be and I really think they are a great product. The Marmalade uses them on a high profile job today. Referring to the Optex Probe is unfair for sure as it is a lens that gos vor over 100.000K these days, it is just a different approach to the same problems… a very expensive approach. We are already working on the next 3, maybe even 4 episodes. The rest of the year will be packed ;-) Thanks again for everything!!

About the smoke/haze machine ; try to not use that blue one, it's one of the most common but it really sucks. The fluid used is indeed very greasy and start to accumulate everywhere (including in your lungs) and it stinks. Try using stage grade smoke machine like an MDG, which used pressurise Co2 or Nitrogen, with a special fluid that doesn't have any smell, and is completely dry and leaves no residue.

@@MediaDivision I am a visual artist (many different paint media) and recently spent a few years learning digital painting. I also followed development of Deep Dream and experimented with it. Then I saw MidJourney and IMAGEN and other AI visual art tools and realized the corpus of visual art and photography has been mined without permission to train these regression correlation algorithms on steroids. I was stunned at the exponential increase in quality too and know will only get even better. I felt so deflated that these skills I had just built were effectively useless (still like to do it though for the process) My art for some time has referenced the idea of how the ‘oculus’ of a person so familiar with screen imagery may come to see nature and I incorporate artifacts of compression algorithms and other artifacts from the process of capture and encoding, compression, transmission and projection in paintings of trees. Anyway I feel there will be a growing need for the authentic; objects and images that bear evidence of being crafted by a human brain and hand, with imperfection celebrated. It’s base and the economics of it may not turn out as many predict. Related: When my 19 year old son recently quit “business studies” at University to apprentice as a plumber I realized he has a gut feeling it will be some time before robots and AI systems will be going into houses to install and fix pipes, but not so long before information driven jobs are “optimized” out of the workforce by AIs.

You have motion control so, why not shoot at a much lower frame rate and slow down the camera move itself? This would create an even more realistic effect rather than shooting high frame rate and moving the camera faster. It also would allow for ALOT brighter shot so you can step down the l ensue to the proper amount depth is there per the size. Either way extremely cool video.

Who said we didn't do that? We have sub shot that are 5 minutes long… and still, the quicker ones work much better for many reasons - still a fraction of real time. The BTS moves are much quicker than real time as that looks more dynamic Thanks

Honestly I m not persuaded with that new lens. I shoot a lot on probes + motion control, the laowa og v1 for me is still the best option. Shorter ( less vibrations ), smaller ( you get closer from the subject ), you need to go to 22 to have good results but everyone knows that macro under t14 is pretty much unusuable, so t8… I still don’t understand that « periscope » design….. such a shame they have not made a refined periprobe design. 35deg is pretty much useless in motion control. I keep my v1 and v2 laowas probe lenses. High quality content as always, keep pushing it man!

If the original works for you, why change the winning team?! "everyone knows that macro under t14 is pretty much unusable"… that is a stretch. Our videos cost very little to produce because no one in the team gets paid. We don't pay for the facilities or the gear. Some some is there, gets sponsored, like the lenses in this case. This episode cost me personally 300$ for the U96 model (which I will sell again), 100$ for the gas to get it, and two weeks of my life. We do it because it is fun, it is rewarding, and we learn a lot, too. Probe adapters made shots inside planes in Nolan's Dunkirk posible with IMAX, and there is a long list if one read The American Cinematographer back issues. Good to see you having so much fun and experimenting in such large scales. I guess in the profession, we all are after this, and only a few of us can achieve an opportunity for it. Hell, you have built your own playground to have fun, and you are sharing it with others in a quality that is unique and unmatched on youtube. What a legend. Wish I had this amount of energy and humbleness. The video is great as always. Enjoyed every second of it, despite of being bored from probe lenses (at least its overusage in uncreative ways). Das Boot is one of my alltime favourites ever, so thumbs up for that, too. Hungry for the next epic episodes.❤

Totally… so happy that the marmalade took 4 days to play with us and providing such an excellent crew - we are truly blessed. Opportunities come with passion, persistence, and constant improvement… and a bit of luck. I am sure you could do it, if you strive for it, and I am glad you can get something out of our sessions… professionally and for pure entertainment. Das Boot is so good… I always wanted to pay homage. Glad to finally got the chance to do something. Your support makes it possible! Your kindness is giving even more reason to do it. The Division salutes you! Working on the next two already ;-)

Wow... This is amazing, a lot of "samples" compared to others who just talk talk talk, his face, his face, his face, then some examples. I have a question though, how did you set the focus that you can come from afar (the big car was already in focus) and closer to the miniature (and also in focus)?
@MediaDivision

Thanks … we invest vastly more time and effort compared to others. Always trying to produce something worth your time. When you change the distance between camera and the object you have to pull focus of course.

So many flashy toys .. so little dynamic content. Vey disappointing & what’s with the overkill in lighting. Seriously?

Never argue taste. If you wanted to educate yourself, we actually describe why the light is necessary in this video, but you would need basic understanding of exposure for that. This is a channel for advanced filmmakers and photographers that do posses that understanding and use it on a daily basis. Thank you for making this content more relevant by interacting.

Highly recommend checking your spectrograph before uploading. There is a high pitched noise with that robot arm in the 14Khz frequency range (Just a guess, I haven't actually checked). Very prominent.

Given the production need, platform of distribution, and non existent budget I am very happy with the audio of this episode. I didn't have any negative input from audio professionals so far except for things that I am aware of myself and that where unsolvable. You can always improve with everything, but given the time limitations I would rather improve other aspects then something that only bothers a fraction of a percent.

Alexa M is a 10 year old camera designed for 3D rigs and helicopter gimbals… it was pretty much dead with the release of the Alexa mini. Still, it is the same sensor and codecs as it was used on all those great movies, including beauties like Blade Runner 2049. I prefer Alexas image over Venice image

actually… completely normal for a test with a bot that is not screwed into the ground and probe lens setup… vibrations

This is one of the reasons that I got this lens. To do movie film transfers to digital while shooting into a projector film gate by removing the projector lens and replacing the very hot projector bulb and replacing it with an LED as in this scenario. 5:04

Hey, T11 IS twice as much light. There is about 3 times more light hitting the sensor when using T8 VS T14 on the old lens. It's not almost 2 times more light.

I'm surprised with a robot arm and motorized focus pulling that you are getting a consistent camera shake every time just before coming up on the little car.

The tube of the probe lens vibrates.... it is normal with probe senses. Also, for this, the robot is not attached to the ground, so it swings through it's own weight.

Incredibly well done test. I thought I would sit and click around and jump through your video but I found myself watching all 30 minutes and didn't even realize it had been that long. Learned a lot about the new Probe lens set, that I wasn't seeing anywhere else online. I personally own the older Probe and use it quite often in projects, so it's tempting to upgrade, especially after seeing this.
