Dude, another absolute masterpiece of a video. I recently got my first anamorphic lens which I intend to use for photography, and I learned so much from both this and the scope series. Another great video. While they may be a convenient anamorphic solution, in my opinion they suffer from the same issue that all dzo optics do, a very unnatural and unattractive look. The sharpness is overt and almost crunchy and the fall off and bokeh is confused in how it presents is self in comparison. The bokeh is as you said messy, and has a jittery look on the focus pulls and the fall off seems to be fairly harsh adding to the crunchy look. The flares aren't anything special, fine if you want something more controlled but not my cup of tea.
@MediaDivision
8 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot... I don't see a "very unnatural and unattractive look" on DZO lenses in general or on the PAVO.... but like I say in the video: Assessment of lenses - especially anamorphic - is so subjective, you got to find what is right for you. Thanks for your input!!

I love Anamorphic so much and really appreciate the video. To me these Pavo's are way too soft for me. Anamorphic isn't about sharpness, but man these turn detail into butter. Been wanting to see more examples of these and I think even though their larger and heavier, the Laowa Proteus are the better choice. Although I'd love to test both sets together myself before being too sure.
@MediaDivision

Like I said... there is no right or wrong. Image quality with anamorphic is highly subjective. I think that anamorphic lenses should break up the details. having seen PAVO and ORION side by side, I don't see the Proteus being that much better in that regard, but, I have not tried in the same context.

Great analysis and really useful to compare with the Orions. To my mind it looks like the Pavos are lighter, have more subtle flares and are marginally better for filming wide open and close-up, but I would prefer the Orions for night-time shots with out-of-focus lights in the background, because I don't like that messy boke. Quite nice for the size, interesting compact alternative to the Proteus lenses for people who don't want strong flares, but the main drawback I see are the heavy coma in those night exteriors... Glad you enjoy Kristopher. 50-100 there is basically no chance.... the entrance pupil is ver retracted in that one ... causing vignette on everything. Wonderful work as always Nikolas. While I remain a spherical guy, there is one anamorphic set that "makes my heart sing" as you say ... the Xelmus Apollo. If you ever have a chance to shoot on Xelmus, I'd love to see what you do with them. Sadly they seem to be less popular, expensive, and in short supply from being manufactured in Ukraine. Also I'm probably in the minority of folks who LIKE that much flare. As in, I've never felt JJ Abrams overuses them, I loved Star Trek 2009, etc, so that probably says everything you need to know.

Hey Nick… I get it… spherical has it's merits and I heard it before…………… but we will get you sooner or later ;-) I never worked with the Apollo but what I have seen, sure… great option but at 4x the price … hey. Why don't just rent at Panavision. As for the flares, never argue taste … just make sure that you are not known to be the one guy who overcompensates with them ;-) As always, thank you for your support.
@nick_salazar
7 ай бұрын
@@MediaDivision true, you could rent ... but if you shoot for long enough it becomes cheaper to own, but you can't own Panavision. Plus the Apollo are actually relatively light at about 2kg each. You aren't going to be operating any Panavision lenses without serious support. I could maybe roll with Mercury, I do like the shape of those flares a lot, although I wish they had a blue flare version. Amber flare makes me want to vomit.
@MediaDivision
7 ай бұрын
Yes, I know… but owning Apollo makes no sense for owner operators. In that realm and up you rent… I know big commercial and Hollywood DoPs - and nobody owns because it is "cheaper"… you choose from project to project depending on the look you are after and others have a word in that, too. Apollo is for bigger production companies and rentals… and maybe 5 rich dudes just because. Panavision lenses are just as hard or easy to operate as the Apollo or other lower end options… they even have lenses designed for drones… but… they will not rent out to you unless you have some credits behind you. I tried… I didn't get any and neither did a high end productions I worked with. You work with whatever suits your projects, budget, and taste… @@nick_salazar

MD, my favorite camera-related channel. Can't wait for more content but such quality takes time, money, and extensive work.

Thanks so much… indeed, a lot of work &money and we have to feed kids too… and you can't really make good income with these. Catch 22

@@MediaDivision It is much appreciated. I personally started making documentaries and so far nothing but money drain, but very happy and will continue because it's my passion. Made one last summer and views weren't much but the feedback was pretty much worth it. It was about the local biting midges. I'm not interested in these lenses per se, but more about the production quality I'm enjoying. It's literally the peak of production excellence. Keep up the great work just be mindful not to compromised your livelihood, we need you around.

Sounds good on our studio monitors.... but you can't get it right for all setups. I thought so too, the Orion covers so barely that you can see reflections in the Barrel

One of the best channels for filmmakers. Would be interesting, how the Blazar Remus hold up against the Pavos.
@MediaDivision

Thanks man… well, Blazer kind of asked us to do a review, but, giving our production value, we can't do it for free. With a sponsored test, it is always a bit difficult to make a direct comparison. Of course we could just go and rent the Blazers… but we don't want to be all about anamorphic all the time and such a test will be only so interesting to a tiny audience. In the end, we have to do things that have some value for us, as well as a large enough audience.

To be really honest, I think this is kind of a buyest review even though I adore your channel and all of the videos. There is not much footage shot wide open, and we know that those lenses are unusable at t2 and barely useable at t.2.8 which is disappointing for s35. Proteus has far better optical quality with the same price, flares are average and cost are not very competitive. Bokeh is really distracting because of how busy and irregular it is. Size is the only benefit, but it requires a lot of compromises. Even though I adore this channel, I don't think the review is really objective. Saying all that I still have to say that the scenes are really stunning.

The word you are looking for is: "biased"... Basically all the footage from the staircase is shot at maximum aperture, and (depending on the context) I think it is very much useable. I shot it and put it in there so you have a good basis to decide for yourself what is usable in your context. I have a section discussing that everything is a trade off, and it strongly depends on what you want. What I find strange is your attitude towards this... calling this biased, even though I made sure not to say that the PAVOs are better than other lenses and explain at lengths up and downside, trade offs and so on. The Proteus have a different approach and result but surely not "far better optical quality" . I'm not married to any manufacturer. If you prefer the Proteus... go for it... Taste is nothing to argue about. I am testing the PAVO here and telling those who care what I think about them... if you take that as an attack on lenses that I have never shot on... well..........

Fantastic video as usual. Thanks for doing the tests. It’s great to see these on an ARRI Alexa - I’m in the market for ( budget anamorphic ) but these just don’t really look that great. They still have an ‘ anamorphic adapter look ‘. The image feels a bit thin… almost like the glass used is very basic. I really like their Vespid primes though.
@MediaDivision

Thanks a lot… I am not quite sure what you mean with "thin" but I highly doubt that the glass is inferior in any way… especially compared to the Vespid primes. Like I mentioned… anamorphic lenses are highly subjective when it comes to judge an image.

Sorry, but we can’t just go out and buy every lens or adapter and invest week of work. We collaborate or we look at truly interesting products for professionals. In SCOPE chapter 2 and 3 we cover all sorts of adapters, I don’t think we have much to add to that.
