I really love this series. It's not perfect by any means, but its imperfections for me are almost a feature. Kind of hard to explain exactly what I mean, but it's just got a really distinct presence that I love. So much so that it inspired me to start writing something of my own specifically inspired by it. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to see what Mclean does next.

I just bought this series and am looking forward to reading it once I finish reading Age of Madness. People that don't like the violence or think that bad things shouldn't happen in books should maybe stick to Dr. Seuss books and leave grim dark fantasy to those of us that can handle it and love it. Authors, like movie screen play writers, have to write evil, vile people to be villains and those types certainly exist in the real world so people need to quit complaining and just read what they like and leave the other stuff alone. I often buy books after reading bad reviews that talk about how horrible and cruel the characters are or they talk about the so-called triggers. Thanks for the review Petrik and happy reading!
@PetrikLeo

Thank you so much! I always feel confused by the stance of not wanting to read any form of violence in fantasy books. Fantasy seems to be the wrong genre for that. Often, one of the most exciting things about the fantasy genre is the battle and magic in the fantastical world. Throwing the battle and confrontation against evil is odd to me. I do like reading something relaxing once in a while. Not judging anyone, but insisting some grimdark fantasy books shouldn't exist is weird. Almost feels like censorship. Just don't read them.

This was a fantastic series. There are many things that align to make it a great read. The settings was seedy and gritty and dark. All of this made for a setting that was intense and real enough to be tangible, giving the impression of standing next to the characters seeing it all for myself. As for the characters, they all had time to shine, from the most important ones to the no-so-important ones. Peter McLean found a way to make sure you got to know these characters individually. I was able to be vested in them all in a short amount of time. That was refreshing, and I appreciate it. The overall story remained fresh and interesting enough to never be bored as it danced through the intricacies and details that unfold in this tale. In short, I really, really liked this series. It is one of my favorites of all time.

I completely agree with everything you said, Michael! I love that even though it's told in first person POV, McLean made the supporting characters so fleshed out, too. I mean, Bloody Anne, Jochan, Billy, and more were characters that felt real as well. Not just Tomas. It's so good. I think I will reread this series someday in the future! :)

Amazing video, Petrik!! You are doing the good work out there, shining the light on all these hidden gems!! I read Priest of Gallows last week (nice death scene, my friend 🤣) and immediately jumped into Priest of Crowns, which I am about to finish today!! It has been one hell of a wild ride and I am both excited and sad to finish out this series. Tomas Piety and his crew are honestly some of the best characters I have ever read and it truly feels like I have been a part of their little found family for the past four books (though I doubt Tomas would feel the same about me, given his trust issues, lol). Also, BLOODY ANNE!!! I can't believe I almost didn't continue with this series after first reading Priest of Bones. It took me a year before deciding to give it a second chance and then I was completely hooked, it's now one of my all-time favourite series!! I have the series, but haven't gotten around to reading it-a state of affairs I might have to remedy. I'm not really into grimdark-I disliked Poppy War and First Law- but I guess I could give this one a shot. The short books and fast pace should help. Finished Steel Crow Saga, by the way. A good book, but the end didn't satisfy me, so I can't go above 4.25 stars. Finally starting Babel today. Let's see if it lives up to the glowing reviews.
